Hurricane .Test Uessages, During the hurricane season mea-

cages are periodically transmitted to the individual

naval r adio stations in t he hurricane belt with orders to

assume interruption of regular r adio circuits and to re­

establish conmrunications using emergency equipment. On

20 May the f irst drill message of the season was trans­

mitted to Radio San· Juan. San J uan reported that it had

successfully· re-established communications 71ith Radio

· uashington and Radio Charlotte Amelie, St. Thomas , after

an elapsed time of 7 minutes.

Dredging at the Naval Operating Base at Norfolk, Virginia, awarded to the Norfolk Dredging Company of Norfolk, Vir­ ginia for ~66 , 000 . Time of completion, 75 days. Personnel buildings at the Naval Patrol Base at Long Island, New York awarded to s.s. Hirsch of New York, N.Y. for $117,840 , Time of completion, 90 days.

Naval Reserve, A directive to Commandants of all districts v.i.thin the continental limit of the U.S. has gone out to proceed vath the procurement of applications f r om enlis- ted ~en of the surface component of the Naval Reserve for active duty afloat for any period from 2 weeks to 1 year commencing 1 July, The plan i s to order to act ive duty afloat all such applicants for the period requested up to a total of 5,000 (provided in the current supplemental
