PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Newsletter Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, Kansas, Mexico May 2016 Oglebay Scholarship, a Roy Saunders Memorial By now, most of you have heard that longtime IAVM Region 6 member, Roy Saunders, CFE, passed away on April 14, 2016. A family friend said that Roy’s motto was “Life is about making the most out of what you are given. Live a little, have some fun…live a little, love a lot!” His daughter, Dawn, wrote this: "God has wiped away every tear and regret, and Roy is celebrating in Heaven today. Dad was a true original...a character in the best sense. If you knew him, you loved him. He was a smart and accomplished man...he was funny, strong, and authentic. “ Saunders was a long-time member of the International Association of Venue Managers, joining in 1957. Roy served in numerous capacities and held almost every office within the association. His influence as a leader, mentor and friend to the membership spanned seven decades. Saunders is the only person in IAVM history to be the recipient of the IAAM Mr. Auditorium Manager award, the Charles A McElravy award (the industry’s highest honor), and serve as IAAM President. Roy saw a need for top- level training for entertainment venue executives and helped conceive and found the Venue Management School (formerly Public Assembly Facility Management School) at Oglebay Park in Wheeling, WV, in 1987. At the IAVM Region 6 meeting in Denver, Bob Mayer announced that Kerry Painter and SMG-Tulsa had made a $250 donation to the region’s scholarship fund in Roy’s name, and then he matched it on the spot! On hearing the news back home in Tulsa, Roy’s family was so very pleased with the gesture, that Joyce Saunders donated $1000 in his name.

  • A Visual Guide to the Gato Class
A VISUAL GUIDE TO THE U.S. FLEET SUBMARINES PART ONE: GATO CLASS (WITH A TAMBOR/GAR CLASS POSTSCRIPT) 1941-1945 BY DAVID L. JOHNSTON 2010 (revised June, 2010) A cursory review of photographs of the U.S. fleet submarines of World War II often leaves the reader with the impression that the boats were nearly identical in appearance. Indeed, the fleet boats from the Porpoise class all the way to the late war Tench class were all similar enough in appearance that it is easy to see how this impression is justified. However, a more detailed examination of the boats will reveal a bewildering array of differences, some of them quite distinct, that allow the separation of the boats into their respective classes. Ironically, the rapidly changing configuration of the boats’ appearances often makes it difficult to get down to a specific boat identification. However being familiar with all of the wartime changes will allow you to narrow down the date of the photo and when combined with other data will sometimes get you the specific name. The Gato class started construction on 11 September 1940 with the Drum at Portsmouth and ended on 01 March 1944 with the commissioning of the Hammerhead at Manitowoc. With a construction period spanning a time of tremendous change within the force, these boats were subjected to several distinct modifications to their outward appearance, with these configurations being distinct enough to allow their visual separation from the earlier Porpoise/Perch, Salmon/Sargo, and Tambor/Gar boats, and the later Balao and Tench classes.

  • Hotel Worker Safety Ordinance
Information Item Date: August 8, 2019 To: Mayor and City Council From: Anuj Gupta, Deputy City Manager / Director of Policy Subject: Analysis of hotel housekeeper safety protections, overtime compensation and required training for human trafficking, sexual and domestic violence, and public health and safety Introduction Santa Monica has long been at the forefront of both supporting the visitor industry that is a key part of our local economy as well as promoting the wellbeing and rights of the workers in our hotels and restaurants. In October 2017, the advocacy efforts of the #MeToo movement rose to prominence, spurring national conversations around protecting workers from sexual harassment and assault in the workplace. The #MeToo movement has touched almost every industry, bringing increased pressure to policy- making bodies to adopt legislation to protect employees in various sectors from workplace harassment and assault. With over eight million visitors annually, 41 hotels and motels anchor Santa Monica’s robust tourism industry, employing about 2,100 hotel housekeepers. As the national discussion around protecting individuals from sexual assault and harassment in the workplace continues, the City of Santa Monica’s Commission on the Status of Women (COSW) spearheaded efforts to bring a hotel housekeepers’ safety policy on the local level that is in line with policies adopted in other cities such as Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle and Chicago. Last October, the Santa Monica City Council (Council) unanimously directed City staff to prepare a draft ordinance on hotel worker safety for consideration and adoption. Staff 1 anticipates introducing an ordinance for first reading at the August 27, 2019 meeting.
