Awards

Medal of the Order of

Max Kelleher was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the 2010 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for service to people with disabilities through Wheelchair Sports Victoria, and to the Australian Football League. Max Kelleher was the Chief Executive Officer of Wheelchair Sports Victoria for some 15 years. During his time of office, Wheelchair Sports Victoria developed as one of the leading providers of sport and recreational activities for people with a disability.

Stirling Stars Awards

Congratulations to Wayne Robins (Wheelchair Sports WA) for being awarded the Stirling Valued Volunteer of the Year at the June 23rd 2010 Stirling Stars Awards Night.

The Awards are to recognise amazing volunteers and junior/senior local sports stars living in the City of Stirling. Wheelchair Sports WA member Nick Radovich was also a finalist for the Sports Star Award.

National Disability Awards

Nominations for the 2010 National Disability Awards are currently open. The awards recognise inspirational individuals – whether they have a disability or help those with disability – who are making a valuable contribution to their local community or wider society. Nominations close on 16 July 2010.

Wheelchair

NWBL

2010 sees 8 rounds of competition hosted throughout , , , Adelaide and Victoria, allowing for a total of 42 games with the Finals being held in Shell Harbour and hosted by the Wollongong Roller Hawks.

Round one of the National League kicked off on the 4th – 6th June 2010. Round one saw the Wenty WheelKings play host to the Brisbane Spinning Bullets; The Adelaide Thunder played host to the Wollongong Roller Hawks, and the West Sydney Razorbacks played host to the Victorian Dandenong Rangers. The Perth Wheelcats were given a bye for the first round. At the end of round one Wollongong Roller Hawks took out top spot on the ladder followed very closely by the Brisbane Spinning Bullets in 2nd, Victorian Dandenong Rangers in 3rd and the West Sydney Razorbacks sitting in 4th spot.

Round two was played on the 19th-20th June where Victoria Dandenong Rangers played host to Adelaide Thunder, Brisbane Spinning Bullets played host to West Sydney Razorbacks Bullets and the Perth Wheelcats played host to the Wenty WheelKings. Round 2 saw the Wollongong Roller Hawks with the bye. At the end of Round 2, the Brisbane Spinning Bullets jumped into 1st place on the ladder, followed by the Victorian Dandenong Rangers in 2nd, Wollongong Roller Hawks in 3rd and the Wenty WheelKings in 4th place.

Round 3 will be played on 23rd – 25th July with home games to Adelaide Thunder, Brisbane Spinning Bullets and the Wenty WheelKings. For full details of dates and locations of rounds on the NWBL please visit http://www.nwblaus.com.

WNWBL

Round two and three of the WNWBL were conducted in late April and May, with teams travelling to Sydney and Victoria for the respective rounds. The ladder now sees Sydney Uni Wheelchair Flames and the Western Stars sit on top heading into round four.

The fourth round of the WNWBL will be held from 6th – 8th August at the Sydney University Sports and Aquatic Centre. The first game will see the Sydney University Wheelchair Flames take on the Western Stars at 2pm followed by the Goudkamp Gladiators versus Victoria Dandenong Rangers at 4pm.

International Results

The Men’s and Women’s Australian Wheelchair Basketball teams, The Rollers and the Gliders returned home with Bronze medals after competing in the 2010 Paralympic World Cup. Both teams struggled through their respective pool rounds losing 2 of their 3 matches leaving both teams to play off for the Bronze Medal.

The Women’s team returned home to play a 5 game test series against Germany in in preparation for the IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships in Birmingham in July. The Gliders were defeated by Germany in the test series 3-2.

World Championship Teams Named

Basketball Australia has announced the 12 athletes to represent the Australian Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team the Gliders and 12 athletes to represent the Australian Men’s Wheelchair Basketball Team the Rollers at the 2010 IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships in Birmingham, England 7th – 17th July.

Boccia

The Boccia National Championships were conducted in on 3-6 May by Boccia Australia with support from Australian Paralympic Committee and AAWD. For full results please visit www.boccia.com.au

The CPISRA Boccia World Championships were held in Lisbon, Portugal on 30 May to 10 June, with Australia’s Gavin Thorneycroft, Terry Cooper and Barry Fear making the finals.

Lawn Bowls

2010 National Championships and Classification Course

The Lawn Bowls Multi-Disability National Championships were hosted by Wheelchair Sports Victoria with assistance from Bowls Australia at Darebin City Bowling Club on 3-7 May. The men’s singles was won by Liam Buckley (SA) and the women’s singles by Jillian Cupples (NSW). The open pairs were won by Liam Buckley and David Bailey (SA), with NSW winning the Interstate trophy.

Wheelchair Sports Australia with assistance from Wheelchair Sports Victoria coordinated a lawn bowls classification course in conjunction with the national championships, with funding assistance from International Bowlers for the Disabled and Australian Paralympic Committee. Six new classifiers were trained.

2010 IWAS World Championships and 2011 IBD World Championships

Due to insufficient entries the IWAS Lawn Bowls World Championships have been cancelled for 2010. Although this is a disappointing situation, the current economic climate in many countries precludes their involvement.

WSA will now focus on sending a team to the 2011 IBD Lawn Bowls World Championships to be held in Bloemfontein, South Africa from 2nd to 12th May 2011.

Cerebral Palsy Football 7-A-Side

The NSW Paralympic 7-A-Side Football team defeated QLD to win the 2010 National Paralympic 7-A-Side Football Championships. The event was hosted by Wheelchair Sports Victoria, Football Federation Victoria and Australian Paralympic Committee, and assisted by a grant from AAWD. It was the first time in the events’ 10 year history that the Championships were held in Victoria. The event was held at the Darebin International Sports Centre, Melbourne from 11th – 14th June 2010. The annual event saw four teams competing for the title with Victoria defeating South Australia for the bronze medal.

Chris Payne from NSW was awarded the George Tonna Medal (Man of the Match – Gold medal Match). Best and Fairest awards went to: NSW – Sam Larkings, QLD – Beau Menzies; SA – Thomas Goodman and VIC – Ben Roche. The Overall Best & Fairest Award went to Thomas Goodman (SA). Ben Roche (VIC) also received the Golden Boot Award and Sam Larkings (NSW) Received the Golden Gloves Award.

The National side will head into camp on the 9th – 11th July and again 23rd- 25th July before heading to Glasgow for a pretournament camp 10th – 14th August and then competing in the European Championships 15th – 28th August in Glasgow Scotland.

Volleyball

Volleyball Australia, with the assistance of an AAWD grant, is running the first ever Level 1 D-Volleyball Coaching Course at the NSW Academy of Sport, Narrabeen, 27th – 29th August. The course includes coaching athletes with a disability, sitting and standing rules, D- Volleyball classification, creating sitting drills and AOCVD certificate of participation and NCAS Level 1 coaching certificate.

Wheelchair Rugby

International Results

The Australian Steelers won the seven-nation Canada Cup recently, following a 4-1 test series defeat to the number one world ranked United States. The team now returns to Australia where players will play in the National Wheelchair , before final preparations for the 2010 IWRF World Championships to be held on 16th – 26th September in Vancouver, Canada.

2010 NWRL

Round 1 kicked off in Melbourne on 21st – 23rd May with some stellar games, which saw the Jetstar Gold Coast Wheelchair Rugby Titans take out top spot on the ladder, going through the round undefeated. SA Sharks are in second place on 8 points only losing to Jetstar Gold Coast Wheelchair Rugby Titans.

Round 2 will kick off in Adelaide on Friday 9th July at the Parks Recreation Centre in Adelaide.
