The Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost August 8, 2021

PRELUDE:

WELCOME

OPENING HYMN: “I Am the Bread of Life”

I am the Bread of life. He who comes to Me shall not hunger. He who believes in Me shall not thirst. No one can come to Me unless the Father draw him.

Chorus: And I will raise him up. And I will raise him up. And I will raise him up on the last day.

The bread that I will give Is My flesh for the life of the world, And he who eats of this bread He shall live forever, He shall live forever. Chorus

I am the Resurrection; I am the Life He who believes in Me Even if he dies, he shall live forever. Chorus

Yes, Lord, I believe That You are the Christ, the Son of God Who has come into the world, Who has come into the world. Chorus

Pastor: O Almighty God, merciful Father, Cong: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

Pastor: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Cong: (sung) AMEN

NICENE CREED:

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

SERMON HYMN: #737 “Rejoice, My Heart, Be Glad and Sing”

Rejoice, my heart, be glad and sing, A cheerful trust maintain; For God, the source of ev’rything, Your portion shall remain.

He is your treasure, He your joy Your life and light and Lord, Your counselor when doubts annoy, Your shield and great reward.

Why spend the day in blank despair, in restless thought the night? On your Creator cast your care; He makes your burdens light.

He only will with patience chide, His rod falls gently down; And all your sins He casts aside in ocean depths to drown.

Upon your lips, then, lay your hand, and trust His guiding love; Then like a rock your peace shall stand here and in heav’n above.

SERMON: “When Enough is Not God’s Enough” 1 Kings 19:4ff

OFFERTORY: (sung by Congregation)

Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a right spirit with-in me. Cast me not away from Thy presence; And take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation; And uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen.

COMMUNION DISTRIBUTION

HYMN O Beautiful for Spacious Skies”

O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain. America! America! God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea.

O beautiful for patriot dream that sees beyond the years Thine alabaster cities gleam undimmed by human tears. America! America! God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea.

HYMN #637 “Draw Near and Take the Body of the Lord”

Draw near and take the body of the Lord, And drink the holy blood for you outpoured; Offered was He for greatest and for least, Himself the victim and Himself the . 7

He who His saints in this world rules and shields, To all believers life eternal yields; With heavenly bread He makes the hungry whole, Gives living waters to the thirsting soul.

Come forward then with faithful hearts sincere, And take the pledges of salvation here. O Lord, our hearts with grateful thanks endow As in this feast of love You bless us now.

BENEDICTION:

Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. Cong: (sung) Amen, amen, amen.”

HYMN: #732 "All Depends on Our Possessing"

All depends on our possessing God’s abundant grace and blessing, Though all earthly wealth depart. They who trust with faith unshaken by their God are not forsaken And will keep a dauntless heart.

Many spend their lives in fretting over trifles and in getting Things that have no solid ground. I shall strive to win a treasure that will bring me lasting pleasure And that now is seldom found.

When with sorrow I am stricken, hope anew my heart will quicken; All my longing shall be stilled. To His loving-kindness tender soul and body I surrender, For on God alone I build.

If my days on earth He lengthen, God my weary soul will strengthen; All my trust in Him I place. Earthly wealth is not abiding, like a stream away is gliding; Safe I anchor in His grace. 8
