Primary vs. General Election

You may wonder why there were so few races on your August Primary ballot and so many on your General Election ballot. Most races do not appear on the Primary ballot.

A Primary is only required if more than two candidates file for the same position or if the office is a partisan office. Partisan offices appear on the Primary ballot even if only one candidate files.

The State of Washington has a Top 2 Primary system. This allows voters to choose among all candidates running for each office regardless of their party preference. The two candidates who receive the most votes in the Primary qualify for the General Election.

Candidates need at least 1% of the votes cast in that race to advance to the General Election.

Each candidate for a partisan office may state a political party that he or she prefers. A candidate’s preference does not imply that they are nominated or endorsed by the party, or that the party approves of or associates with that candidate.

The order in which names appear on the Primary ballot is determined by lot draw.

Statement I am native to Washington, living in North Snohomish County since 1999. As an owner of small businesses and a working man, I understand the challenges facing small businesses and working families. Small businesses and a living wage for working families are integral to a healthy economy and healthy community and need our support.

During the past three decades Snohomish County has been the second fastest growing county in the state. I understand such growth brings with it challenges. Challenges range from infrastructure and affordable housing to preservation of open space and maintaining our quality of life, among others.

I have chosen to run for the County Council to address these concerns, but also protecting our rights, freedoms and privileges. These always seem to be at risk: I understand that justice and equality is an ongoing struggle: A large percentage of our workforce has reached, or is reaching, retirement age. This presents challenges that require our attention: Education must be a priority for us to compete in today’s world which is becoming ever more competitive.

How we manage these challenges will define the future of our community.

Statement Edmonds needs a fresh look at how business in done both within the City Council and the community; someone who can identify with both fiscal issues as well as social needs for all community members. As an experienced financial and technology executive, I bring strong financial acumen with a pragmatic approach for complex problems to get government out of the way of vibrant and strong economic growth. Edmonds is poised to return to flourishing as we come out of this pandemic and will need real solutions that move us forward and get things done. The City Council should represent all of Edmonds and be free of partisan bickering and undue influence by special interests being put before constituents.

It is time to re-open our economy, businesses to flourish, lives to return to normal and Edmonds to take its place as a shining star in the Puget Sound area. My strong business background will provide Edmonds with the leadership in protecting and swiftly restoring our economy. Statement I am a firm believer in the people’s right to a voice. I understand that an essential part of a successful government is listening to the people, understanding the challenges they face, and tackling those challenges head on. Those challenges are not just words on a piece of paper, but they are individual concerns. Our city needs to be accessible both indoors and outdoors. The word accessible to me doesn’t just apply to those of us that are disabled. Accessibility is also needed for people who are often judged simply for being who they are, people of all races and walks of life, and businesses looking to grow. I see this accessibility as the new normal. If you take anything away from the passion that I have for equality it would be this: love many love all. As your council member, I will fight for equality for all, for every voice to be heard, and for the city. I will be bridging the gap between the people that live in Everett and the city government that runs it.

Statement A long-time resident of Lynnwood, I raised my family here and served our community for many years, currently as Council President. Lynnwood is changing with the 2024 arrival of Light Rail. Unable to return to the City of the past; we must be smart about our inevitable growth.

The financial policies of the last eight years are undermining hope for a healthy economic future. In 2014 the City’s general fund balance was over $13 million; now the 2022 general fund balance is estimated at only $3.5 million. I will bring sound budgeting, where expenditures do not exceed revenues.

Tax relief is the top action city government can do. As people struggle to keep up with housing costs, taxing necessities only adds undue burden. I will prioritize ending city taxes on utility bills.

Today, housing being built in Lynnwood consists of apartments or million-dollar houses. The need to build homes for first time buyers, families and downsizing seniors is imperative. Building for the future must include infrastructure maintenance of existing neighborhoods, including our residential streets. As Mayor, I will respect the concerns of current residents while ensuring Lynnwood is prepared for our incoming community members. I ask for your vote.

Statement While this is my first time seeking office, I believe in serving you the voters. That is why I wish to bring our nation’s first Direct Democracy to our small town. Everyone I speak to seems to agree on one, and only one thing, The system is broken and no longer represents the people’s interests.

It doesn’t seem to matter where on the political compass everyone I speak to falls. What belief system they have, or how they feel about any of the many issues facing us today. You can speak to ten different people, and get a dozen different answers. The only consistent thing we can all agree upon is that those who step up to govern us need to do better.

And that is why I am stepping up. Not because I think I am better than the next person, but because I genuinely believe that united we stand, and divided we fall. So we must transition away from a “representative” government that only represents a few, and to a Direct Democracy. Where each of our voices and beliefs can be used. Where instead of a dozen people trying to figure it out, we’ll have thousands.

Statement Growing up in Snohomish I have a fond appreciation for our small town. After graduating Snohomish High School, I moved out of state only to return years later with a full family in tow. Having biracial children, I quickly saw a different version of our town than I had experienced.

Rather than moving away to a more accepting community I began getting involved in conversations about those experiences. I belong to a nonprofit group working directly with community partners. That work includes regular meetings with the school district, conversations with downtown Snohomish businesses, consistent attendance and interaction with our current city council and mayor, and most importantly listening to concerns of members of our community. These conversations and work have prepared me to step up to the next level of leadership. Embracing change will make us a stronger city where community members, small businesses, and visitors all benefit.

As we look to move forward in our community it is imperative we consider all community members’ experiences when making decisions. One thing I have learned through this pandemic is to be present. Each member of our community deserves to be seen, heard and their humanity considered when decisions are being made.

One basic issue that I wish to fix is that you cannot look at the municipal code for Darrington, this is a problem. This would help to fund the school long-term without requiring a long-term tax plan, and give excess energy to the community.

Due to the community’s growth, there’s been increased petty crimes including: theft, vandalism, and other property related crimes. In response, I wish to work closer with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Department, and the victims of crimes. I want to listen to the recommendations of the Sheriff on how to best enable them to catch these predators; I also want to listen to the victim’s experience, to create ordinances that target criminals and criminal behavior.

This is the only way to promote a favorable, more accepting environment ripe for positive growth and a rich learning environment for youth.

I am not a candidate who wants to lead you and tell you what your children need, nor make decisions for your family unit.

I am the candidate who is asking that the voters change the norm and allow myself, a servant leader like many throughout history, to stand with and represent the community.

Statement Every student deserves an empowering education that fosters their sense of belonging, advances their academic journey, and ignites their civic responsibility. This has been a challenging year for families and students - remote learning left many students behind and working parents scrambling to become part-time educators. I am committed to working with parents and educators to ensure we are prepared for what comes next.

As a first-generation college graduate and seasoned teacher and administrator, I am dedicated to improving our civics and foreign language studies by advancing curriculum, promoting the arts, boosting career and college prep resources, and increasing outreach to students to bring their voices to the school board level. The school district does a great job for most of its students - but so many of our children have unique needs beyond the current model. I am committed to supporting those children by providing our teachers and schools with tools they need to ensure all our children have fair and equitable access to learning.

Statement I am running for the school board to give back to the community I grew up in. I also have the pleasure of having our youngest started kindergarten this year in the Stanwood school district.

I believe board members have to be available and great listeners. I see too many questions in our community about IEPs, what resources are available, how to get involved, and how to influence change.

I would help bring management plans that detail the enactment, surveying of progress and disclosure toward achieving the district’s goals relative to educational programming, financial responsibility and resource planning. Our community has grown so much over the 40 plus years I have lived here and we are a much more diverse group than ever before.

I am committed to taking quantifiable actions to examine our approach, practices, and school district beliefs. I will review, with data based results. I will work to promote curriculum and instructional environments to provide equitable, accessible and positive outcomes for each Stanwood School District student. Above all else I want to be a partner with all parents, teachers and the community in the education of our students.

Statement I have been involved in our school district for many years as a parent, in the student store, and in the classroom. I am involved in our community as a citizen, a parent, and now a grandparent, I want to be your voice.

Classroom teachers and parents must create school policies and practices appropriate to the students, not politicians. 12 years in Army Reserves taught me that it is boots on the ground, not generals, that get things done. When elected I will strive for an education for our kids based on the 3 Rs and age appropriate programs emphasizing personal growth and responsibility.

The state is required to provide education for our children but Legislation imposes a required curriculum based on politics and racism. With a year-long shut down extended by union demands, our schools are in crisis.

It is time to Reopen the Schools, with new questions being raised about the risks of mask wearing,we must look at the science data, assess the risks, as well as acknowledge the challenges students are experiencing, while providing the support needed for those challenges. Statement My previous work with the Bureau and construction management has given me the greatest appreciation for our community’s access to affordable, clean, and convenient water. Many of the folks I served had to haul water from towns at great cost to themselves in time and money.

While our problems here in Snohomish County are not as monumental, we have some tough challenges ahead as a district. We purchase our water from the City of Everett and many municipalities help us to treat a majority of wastewater produced in the district. Our district is beholden to their rate increases and will continue to face this in 2022 and beyond. I have years of experience working with numerous user groups to negotiate mutually beneficial agreements and feel confident I will represent our community’s best interests.

Our water district has aging infrastructure that needs constant maintenance and end-of-life replacements and we must plan and prepare for these eventualities. We must also be able to keep up with current and future demand as growth in the district is unprecedented. Long-term planning for climate change and infrastructure are key to keeping our rates low.

Vote for me to bring a fresh start for fresh water.

Statement It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your Port Commissioner for the past 5 years. During this period, the Port has continued to enhance our marina and waterfront amenities; provide community recreational and economic opportunities; and expand tourism through a vibrant waterfront, highly successful whale watching operation, and music and arts events.

Sustainable environmental stewardship of Edmonds’ precious waterfront is a key Port and personal priority. I have been instrumental in reviewing and updating the Port’s environmental practices and policies, including greening of our buildings, improving stormwater treatment, and eliminating the use of pesticides and herbicides in our nearshore environment. The Port meets or exceeds all environmental requirements and standards and is recognized as an environmental leader among public ports.

The impressive revenues generated by our marina and commercial ventures, combined with our aggressive control of expenses and bonding costs, now allow us to move forward with the reconstruction and beautification of the north seawall and highly popular waterfront Portwalk. My port project and environmental experience uniquely qualifies me to help guide this effort.

I would greatly appreciate your vote to continue the Port’s unparalleled record of success and community contribution--because experience and qualifications matter.
