This Is a Daily Compilation of Media Articles Concerning the Covid-19 Impact to the Global Cruise Industry
1 THIS IS A DAILY COMPILATION OF MEDIA ARTICLES CONCERNING THE COVID-19 IMPACT TO THE GLOBAL CRUISE INDUSTRY. Please note this isn’t a complete listing of media articles but a snapshot only. 29 March, 2020: PASSENGERS TRANSFERRED FROM VIRUS-STRICKEN CRUISE SHIP OFF PANAMA Passengers on a virus-stricken cruise liner stranded off Central America were transferred to another ship Saturday, after the US-bound vessel was given permission to pass through the Panama Canal. The Zaandam had been stuck in the Pacific Ocean since March 14 after dozens of the 1,800 people on board reported flu-like symptoms and several South American ports refused to let it dock. The ship's Dutch owner Holland America said Friday four passengers had died and two more had tested positive for COVID- 19. Panama on Saturday reversed its decision to block the Zaandam from its canal, and said it would be allowed to pass "to provide humanitarian help." Another ship, the Rotterdam, has since arrived off the coast of Panama from San Diego carrying food, medical staff, testing kits, medicine and food for the beleaguered vessel. Passengers showing no signs of the virus were ferried from the Zaandam to the Rotterdam on Saturday, a French tourist told AFP by telephone. "It's like emptying a bathtub with a teaspoon," she said. "The boats can hold about 100 people, and they are putting about half in at a time. That's why it's going slowly." The Zaandam cruise liner left Buenos Aires on March 7 and was supposed to arrive two weeks later at San Antonio, near Santiago in Chile. -

Port of Southampton Welcomes Record-Breaking 2m Cruise Passengers | 1 Port of Southampton Welcomes Record-Breaking 2m Cruise Passengers A record breaking 2m cruise passengers visited the Port of Southampton in 2017 and brought with them a massive multi-million pound cash injection to the local economy. Every time a cruise ship visits Southampton, it is estimated to bring a cash boost of £2m and in 2017 there were more than 500 cruise calls. ABP Southampton Director, Alastair Welch, said: “2017 was a record-breaking year for the Port of Southampton and 2018 looks set to be even busier. “A huge amount of work goes into ensuring all passengers transit our facilities with the greatest of ease and it is testament to our whole port community that 2m cruise passengers receive Southampton’s world class service.” In 2017 the port experienced its busiest long weekend ever when 15 cruise ships visited the port in June. And it was recognised for the ninth consecutive year as the Best UK Departure Port by Cruise Critic UK editors. In 2018 the port can look forward to eight maiden calls and a naming ceremony for Azamara Pursuit. New ships calling for the first time in Southampton will be: Aida Perla; Norwegian Bliss; MSC Meraviglia; Sapphire Princess; MS Zuiderdam; Seven Seas Navigator and MS Koningsdam. Azamara Pursuit will be christened in Southampton in a first for Azamara Club Cruises. Cruising in the Twenty-First Century
Chapter 1 Cruising in the Twenty-First Century he idea of a cruise vacation is almost mythic. Our perception of cruises Tis often based on idyllic images we’ve seen in movies and on television. Such images usually depict classic ocean liners, which are quite unlike the ships commonly used today. As well as being significantly larger, today’s ships are no longer designed primarily for travel but rather are large-scale, water-based resorts. Despite these significant changes in cruising and the cruise industry over the past fifty years, glamorous images of opulence and “class” have remained relatively intact. These elements frequently underlie the motivation for choosing a cruise vacation. Consumers are buying an image of what they believe a cruise will be—an image more informed by what cruising used to be. Most consumers, for example, still assume a cruise is all inclusive. This is no longer true, and most cruise lines have dropped claims of all inclusive- ness from their advertising and brochures. But this may not be obvious to consumers because cruise advertising is purposely abstract and scarce on concrete statements about the cruise or ship itself. Cruise advertising is full of “feel good” messages. Examples include Royal Caribbean’s “Get out there” commercials, which highlight activity and adventure, and Carnival’s dancing palm trees. These abstract ads leave viewers to focus on whatever is most appealing to them about a cruise vacation. The cruise industry enjoys an image that is more positive than deserved. This is in part a product of collectively spending more than a billion dollars a year on advertising and public relations. -
