S4C Authority Bulletin - July 2004 OPEN MEETING – TREGARON The Authority held an Open Meeting on Thursday, 22 July 2004, at the Rhiannon Celtic Centre, Tregaron. 45 members of the public were present. The meeting was chaired by Elan Closs Stephens, Chair of S4C, and the Chief Executive, Huw Jones, and the Producer of Children’s Programmes, Angharad Garlick, also took part in the discussion. Amongst the matters discussed were: Sport A member of the audience expressed a wish to see greater Welsh language coverage being given to minor sports – bowls, cycling, cross-country running, athletics, tennis, and it was said that there was also a need for a programme on soccer in Wales such as Gôl. It was said that although rugby was fine, there was too much of it. Huw Jones explained that S4C was anxious to obtain rights to broadcast other sports where they were available. However, rugby was an example of where S4C was able to increase its audience. Soccer had similar potential and S4C was aiming to broadcast more soccer over the coming year. It was, however, more difficult to make similar pledges in relation to the minor sports. It was hoped to be able to give greater coverage to rallying, and discussions were ongoing in respect of some other areas of sport. However, the Channel was aware that viewers expected sports coverage to be exciting and of a high standard. S4C would seek to pursue the rights to broadcast such sports when they became available. Linguistic Standards It was said that S4C needed to take great care in relation to linguistic standards, particularly when children were likely to be watching. -

Sir Mansel has commenced with his return to the organisation and given his commitment to a range of organisations/reviews, such as the Parliamentary Review he will not return fully into his role under the until 1 April 2017. This report focuses on the engagements/activities of Professor Simon Smail as the Acting Chair. Other activities performed by Sir Mansel are also shown which he has undertaken as part of a phased return to the role of Chair (see Appendix 1). Professor Simon Smail will step down as Acting Chair on the 1 April 2017 when Sir Mansel will assume the full range of roles and responsibilities. -

Cardiff 19th Century Timeline Game education resource This resource aims to: • engage pupils in local history • stimulate class discussion • focus an investigation into changes to people’s daily lives in Cardiff and south east Wales during the nineteenth century. Introduction Playing the Cardiff C19th timeline game will raise pupil awareness of historical figures, buildings, transport and events in the locality. After playing the game, pupils can discuss which of the ‘facts’ they found interesting, and which they would like to explore and research further. This resource contains a series of factsheets with further information to accompany each game board ‘fact’, which also provide information about sources of more detailed information related to the topic. For every ‘fact’ in the game, pupils could explore: People – Historic figures and ordinary population Buildings – Public and private buildings in the Cardiff locality Transport – Roads, canals, railways, docks Links to Castell Coch – every piece of information in the game is linked to Castell Coch in some way – pupils could investigate those links and what they tell us about changes to people’s daily lives in the nineteenth century. Edgecombe, Centre for Evolutionary Research, Australian Museum, 6 College Street, Sydney South, New South Wales 2000, Australia Character analysis is the single most important element of any phylogenetic study. Characters are simply criteria for comparing homologous organismic parts between taxa. Homology of organismic parts in any phylogenetic study is an a priori assumption, founded upon topological similarity through some or all stages of ontogeny. Once homolo- gies have been suggested, characters are invented by specifying bases of comparison of organismic parts from taxon to taxon within the study group. Ideally, all variation in a single homology occurring within the study group should be accounted for. Comparisons are between attributes of homologous parts, (e.g., simple presence, size of some- thing, number of something), and these attributes are referred to as character states. Study taxa are assigned member- ship in one (or more, in the case of polymorphisms) character-state for each character in the analysis. A single char- acter now implies discrete groupings of taxa, but this in itself does not constitute a phylogeny. In order to suggest or convey phylogenetic information, the historical status of each character-state, and of the the group of taxa it sug- gests, must be evaluated. That is, in the case of any two states belonging to the same character, we need to discover whether one state is primitive (broadly speaking, ancestral) or derived (representative of an evolutionary innovation) relative to the other.
