Northwest Allen County Schools Guidelines for School Delays and Closings Due to Inclement Weather Beliefs Weather conditions are both variable and potentially extreme in Northeast Indiana; the safety of children will guide decisions regarding delaying or closing. Concrete rules do not exist in making decisions regarding variable and extreme weather; however, these guidelines will serve as a reference for Northwest Allen County Schools (NACS). NACS believes our community expects schools to be open and provide educational services as well as supervision and other services, such as meals, to its students. NACS believes all parents are committed to keeping children safe and these parents will dress their children appropriately for the existing weather conditions when sending their children to school. NACS recognizes that it is first and foremost a parental decision as to whether or not a child should attend school on inclement weather days. NACS respects the parent’s determination regarding her/his child’s attendance at school during inclement weather. If school is open, or delayed, because of inclement weather, the school will respect the parent’s decision to keep their child at home. Parents are expected to contact the school and inform school officials of their determination, and the student will be counted as absent, per Indiana code. Students who are absent due to inclement weather will be given the opportunity to complete their academic work. Communication On a normal school day, a delay and/or closing will be announced no later than 6:30 a.m. Following a delay, if the need to close should arise, it will be announced no later than 8:30 a.m. -
Preschool Television Viewing and Adolescent Test Scores: Historical Evidence from the Coleman Study
PRESCHOOL TELEVISION VIEWING AND ADOLESCENT TEST SCORES: HISTORICAL EVIDENCE FROM THE COLEMAN STUDY MATTHEW GENTZKOW AND JESSE M. SHAPIRO We use heterogeneity in the timing of television’s introduction to different local markets to identify the effect of preschool television exposure on standardized test scores during adolescence. Our preferred point estimate indicates that an additional year of preschool television exposure raises average adolescent test scores by about 0.02 standard deviations. We are able to reject negative effects larger than about 0.03 standard deviations per year of television exposure. For reading and general knowledge scores, the positive effects we find are marginally statistically significant, and these effects are largest for children from households where English is not the primary language, for children whose mothers have less than a high school education, and for nonwhite children. I. INTRODUCTION Television has attracted young viewers since broadcasting be- gan in the 1940s. Concerns about its effects on the cognitive devel- opment of young children emerged almost immediately and have been fueled by academic research showing a negative association between early-childhood television viewing and later academic achievement.1 These findings have contributed to a belief among the vast majority of pediatricians that television has “negative effects on brain development” of children below age five (Gentile et al. 2004). They have also provided partial motivation for re- cent recommendations that preschool children’s television view- ing time be severely restricted (American Academy of Pediatrics 2001). Guidelines for NACS School Delays and Closings Due to Inclement Weather Beliefs • Weather conditions are both variable and potentially extreme in northeast Indiana; the safety of children will guide decisions regarding delaying or closing. • Concrete rules do not exist in making decisions regarding variable and extreme weather; however, these guidelines will serve as a reference for Northwest Allen County Schools (NACS). • NACS believes our community expects schools to be open each day providing educational services, supervision, and other services, such as access to breakfast and lunch, to each of our students. • NACS believes all parents are committed to keeping children safe, and we believe all parents will dress their children appropriately for the existing weather conditions when sending their children to school. • NACS believes decisions about whether school will be closed for the entire day, delayed, or closed early is based on whether our buses can safely transport students on NACS roads. NACS believes decisions regarding whether it is safe enough for teenagers to drive is a family decision between each parent and her/his teenager. • NACS recognizes that it is first and foremost a parental decision as to whether a child should attend school on inclement weather days. • NACS respects the parent’s determination regarding her/his child’s attendance at school during inclement weather. A Super Yacht Economic Impact and Legacy Study which provided: a. Fleet overview and sailing patterns b. Perceptions of/feedback on Bermuda as a super yacht destination c. Estimated economic impact of super yachts d. Case studies on 3 super yacht destinations 2. A Quality Index Assessment of Bermuda’s experiences using peer review data and benchmarking against competitive destinations. 3. Several online surveys on topics including: a. Visitor brochure request follow-up survey b. Internal operations feedback 4. An Estimated Economic Impact Calculator was developed as an online tool which integrates with the CRM to estimate the value of events and groups to the local economy and return on investment (ROI). 3 IN ADDITION, RBI CONTINUED THE FOLLOWING: 1. The sign or “target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation. -
