In high school, stereotypes run rampant, but here at Perry, those who break free from the mold to The Cheerleader stand up and make a name for themselves

By Ashley Sanders the precedent When it comes to the stereotypical view of a teacher, Perry’s own Dennis Mitchell seems to fit the bill perfectly. With his glasses and tidy bowties, his outward appearance is enough to send the laziest students running. As for those who have been fortunate enough to take part in Mitchell’s eccentric classroom experience, the stereotype couldn’t be more wrong. One such student states, “I love Mr. Mitchell because he constantly makes allusions to random things and understands the weird people of the world.” Unconventional and often just plain odd, Mitchell’s class keeps everyone guessing. The environment in the classroom is exciting and engaging, as opposed to what some might expect from an English teacher’s element. Unlike some teachers, Mitchell has come to the realization that in this day and age, technology is a necessity. According to Mitchell, the stereotype is that teachers are “especially oblivious when it comes to technology…I don’t think a lot of teachers realize that tech is the way research is done.” Mitchell blames this difference between him and the stereotypical teacher on the fact that he “came into teaching fairly late as opposed to someone who went to teaching right out of college…[making it] like they never left high school…I think I have a lot of unusual life experiences that I try to bring into the teaching.” As a result of seeing the world before he settled down into his career, Mitchell is the teacher that he is today. Dennis Mitchell is the kind of teacher that students find themselves relating to and confiding in. His kind personality makes him easy to talk to, allowing him to create a wonderful learning environment. When questioned about the difference between himself and the stereotype, Mitchell states that “I’m perhaps a little quirkier than most teachers…I like to look for connections that most teachers might not see.” By looking for these connections, Mitchell brings a new angle on literature and the English language to the table, sparking his students interest in such a way that a great deal of other teachers could not.
