COURSE OUTLINE Introduction to Poetry

Course Description LT 204. Introduction to Poetry. 3 hours credit. Prerequisite: EG 101 with a C or better. This course will enable the student to read, analyze, and write effectively about poetry from different historical periods with emphasis on various forms, techniques, and critical approaches.

Butler-assessed Outcomes The intention is for the student to be able to 1. Define literary terms and relate them to specific poems. 2. Identify characteristics of form within historical periods in specific poems. 3. Write analytically about poems.

Learning PACT Skills that will be developed and documented in this course Through involvement in this course, the student will develop ability in the following PACT skill area(s): Personal Development Skills  Interpersonal interaction - By engaging with complex and challenging poems, the student will identify biases and develop empathy for characters and situations different from, yet contingent upon, the student’s own experiences. Analytical Thinking Skills  Critical thinking - Through close examination and written reflection on the themes and ideas of poems, the student will draw logical conclusions supported with evidence. Communication Skills  Creation and delivery of messages (writing, speaking and nonverbal) – Through composition and delivery of responses to poems, the student will effectively communicate with identified audiences.

Developing, organizing, and writing a thesis-directed seminar paper (C skill) utilizing evidence from course material (A skill) to demonstrate engagement with and understanding of the ideas and concepts of the course (P skill).

Learning Activities Learning activities will be assigned to assist the student to achieve the intended learning outcomes(s) through lecture, instructor-led class discussion, guest speakers, group activities, and other activities at the discretion of the instructor. These activities may be face-to-face or online.

Grade Determination The student will be graded on learning activities and assessment tasks. Grade determinants may include the following: daily work, quizzes, chapter or unit tests, comprehensive examinations, projects, presentations, class participation, and other methods of evaluation at the discretion of the instructor.
