Friedrich Engels’s Life Friedrich Engels was born on 28 November 1820 in Barmen, a city in North Rhine- Westphalia, Germany, that has since 1929 formed a district of the city Wuppertal. In the early 19th century, Barmen was one of the most important manufacturing centres in the German-speaking world. He was the child of Elisabeth Franziska Mauritia Engels (1797-1873) and Friedrich Engels senior (1796-1860). The Engels family was part of the capitalist class and operated a business in the cotton manufacturing industry, which was one of the most important industries. In 1837, Engels senior created a business partnership with Peter Ermen called Ermen & Engels. The company operated cotton mills in Manchester (Great Britain) and Engelskirchen (Germany). Other than Marx, Engels did not attend university because his father wanted him to join the family business so that Engels junior already at the age of 16 started an ap- prenticeship in commerce. -

Huebunkers.wordpress.com V. S. Conttren Among contemporary thinkers, Marx is undoubtedly one of the most controversial. There are countless works, from the most diverse levels and with the most varied objectives, that deal with his thought, whether to criticize, defend or interpret it under different biases. Naturally, it is not up to us to touch on the polemics that have developed, but it is always worth calling attention to the tragic destiny of Marxian thought, most of the time approached on the basis of external problems or conceptions, assigning meanings and even questions that are, in fact, alien to it.1 If today, in the face of successive defeats from the perspective of labour, it is necessary and urgent to critically rethink the history of the workers' movement, it is equally necessary and urgent to recover Marx's very thoughts. But, paradoxically, there are still works by the German thinker that, besides earning less attention from scholars, remain unpublished in Brazil. This is the case of the articles written by him for the Neue Rheinische Zeitung, almost all of them unpublished in Portuguese (except for The Bourgeoisie and the Counter- Revolution2), and which, except for the very important work by Claudin,3 barely have a more detailed analysis. -

He studied at the universities of Berlin and Leipzig, taking the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the latter. From the beginning his leanings were democratic and liberal, and when the time came for him to submit himself to the stupidities of the Prussian drill sergeant he left Prussia and went to live in Leipzig, which in those days was " foreign territory ". This deliberate revolt caused the breaking off of relations between him and his family. Whilst still a young man he began to take an active part in public life and in the political struggles of the day. At the age of 25 he was a member of the 1 small band of democrats led by Guido Weiss and Johann Jacoby which had sufficient courage to protest openly against the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine by Bismarck after the Franco Prussian War. -

This page intentionally left blank HEGEL AND ARISTOTLE Hegel is, arguably, the most difficult of all philosophers. To find a way through his thought, interpreters have usually approached him as though he were developing Kantian and Fichtean themes. This book is the first to demonstrate in a systematic way that it makes much more sense to view Hegel’s idealism in relation to the metaphysical and epis- temological tradition stemming from Aristotle. This book offers an account of Hegel’s idealism and in particular his notions of reason, subjectivity, and teleology, in light of Hegel’s inter- pretation, discussion, assimilation, and critique of Aristotle’s philoso- phy. It is the first systematic analysis comparing Hegelian and Aris- totelian views of system and history; being, metaphysics, logic, and truth; nature and subjectivity; spirit, knowledge, and self-knowledge; ethics and politics. In addition, Hegel’s conception of Aristotle’s phi- losophy is contrasted with alternative conceptions typical of his time and ours. No serious student of Hegel can afford to ignore this major new in- terpretation. I. LENIN KARL MARX KARL MARX was born May 5, 1818, in the city of Trier, in the Rhine province of Prussia. His father was a lawyer-a Jew, who in 1824 adopted Protestantism. The family was well-to-do, cultured, bu~ not revolutionary. After graduating from the Gymnasium in Trier, Marx entered first the University at Bonn, later Berlin University, where he studied 'urisprudence, but devoted most of his time to history and philosop y. At th conclusion of his uni versity course in 1841, he submitted his doctoral dissertation on Epicure's philosophy:* Marx at that time was still an adherent of Hegel's idealism. In Berlin he belonged to the circle of "Left Hegelians" (Bruno Bauer and others) who sought to draw atheistic and revolutionary conclusions from Hegel's philosophy. After graduating from the University, Marx moved to Bonn in the expectation of becoming a professor. However, the reactionary policy of the government,-that in 1832 had deprived Ludwig Feuer bach of his chair and in 1836 again refused to allow him to teach, while in 1842 it forbade the Y0ung professor, Bruno Bauer, to give lectures at the University-forced Marx to abandon the idea of pursuing an academic career. -

Marx, Hegel, Plato 1 In his early writings, Marx develops, in part with Frederick Engels, the notion of ideology for the purpose of overcoming the philosophy of his time. The dis- sociation of the Marxian discourse from philosophy, this desire to overcome philosophy, finds one of its culminations in the 11th thesis on Feuerbach, which states with excessive clarity: “The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point, however, is to change it.”1 This clarity is excessive, especially as Marx in his early writings at no point de- velops a discussion on the question of philosophy as such, but rather thorough- ly attacks the philosophy of his time, mainly the leftovers of the Hegelian dis- course and the young Hegelians’ attempts to understand the world according to the concepts of the mind. ‘Philosophy’ in the early Marx is the philosophy of the young Hegelians. At a certain point the disagreement with this type of philoso- phy seems to spread into philosophy as such. The young Hegelians, followers of the philosophy Marx is concerned with, are criticised regarding two main aspects. Firstly, they invert the relation between mind and world; following Hegel, they seek to explain everything on the grounds of concepts of consciousness. But secondly, even worse is their assertion of the 121 independence of the concept. The young Hegelians take the concept to be an independent reality of its own value, and this means that they understand the concept to be built upon its own force. -

Looking at several empirical case studies of social practices from twentieth-century history, it draws attention to the importance of status loss and the depreciation of value in periods of political rupture, particularly after the First World War. -
