  • A Diet for a Sensitive Soul: Vegetarianism in Eighteenth-Century Britain
A Diet for a Sensitive Soul: Vegetarianism in Eighteenth-Century Britain Anita Guerrini While vegetarianism has a long history in Western culture, it reemerged forcefully in late seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Britain. Three main motivations for vegetarianism converged in this period: religious, medical, and moral. In addition, a vegetarian diet entered mainstream medical and popular thought in the works of the physician George Cheyne. By the time of Joseph Ritson's Essay on Abstinence from Animal Food in 1802, however, vegetarianism was about to rejoin the irrational fringe, exemplified in the nineteenth century by Sylvester Graham and his followers. 1 In this essay, I shall focus on three vegetarians of the period: the radical hatter Thomas Tryon (1634-1703), George Cheyne (1671-1743), and the man of letters Joseph Ritson (1752-1803). Cheyne's work, especially his Essay of Health and Long Life (1724) and The English Malady (1733), defined the nascent concept of the sensitive character and explicitly connected it to diet and lifestyle. To Cheyne, a vegetarian diet was preeminently a diet for the sensitive soul. Over the century, the sensitive soul negotiated a path from the overtly religious Tryon to the covertly religious Cheyne to the professedly antireligious Ritson. To each, in addition, vegetarianism was part of a wider critique of contemporary society. Tryon was one of a number of religiously motivated vegetarians in the period following the English Civil War. 2 The context of his ideas can be delineated by examining an earlier

Malebranche's Augustinianism and the Mind's Perfection Abstract This dissertation presents a unified interpretation of Malebranche’s philosophical system that is based on his Augustinian theory of the mind’s perfection, which consists in maximizing the mind’s ability to successfully access, comprehend, and follow God’s Order through practices that purify and cognitively enhance the mind’s attention. I argue that the mind’s perfection figures centrally in Malebranche’s philosophy and is the main hub that connects and reconciles the three fundamental principles of his system, namely, his occasionalism, divine illumination, and freedom. To demonstrate this, I first present, in chapter one, Malebranche’s philosophy within the historical and intellectual context of his membership in the French Oratory, arguing that the Oratory’s particular brand of Augustinianism, initiated by Cardinal Bérulle and propagated by Oratorians such as Andre Martin, is at the core of his philosophy and informs his theory of perfection. Next, in chapter two, I explicate Augustine’s own theory of perfection in order to provide an outline, and a basis of comparison, for Malebranche’s own theory of perfection.

Cet intérêt, à peine relevé par la DOI : https://doi.org/10.7202/1067463ar critique, s’explique aisément par la nécessité que perçoit Rousseau de chercher dans le corps même des hommes des preuves de leur bonté naturelle. Index of contributions to the Acta Eruditorum 1682-1735. 141 1 Introduction In 1990 one of the authors of the present work published The Acta Eruditorum under the editorship of Otto Mencke. The history of an international learned journal between 1682 and 1707. (Amsterdam & Maarssen, APA-Holland University Press). It was the translation of a Dutch dissertation, which had appeared in 1986. That dissertation was the result of the first detailed survey into the external history of the highlight of the early scholarly periodical press in the German Countries, so far. Together with its successor, The Nova Acta Eruditorum, the periodical lasted for a whole century, from 1682 till 1782. So it became one of the most important vehicles of learned communication of the Enlightenment, not only within the German Countries, but across the entire Republic of Letters. The journal was presented to the world as a product of collective authorship by the Collectores Actorum Eruditorum. But in reality the management of the publication rested in the hands of the editor-in-chief, from the start till 1707 Otto Mencke, and thereafter his son, Johann Burkhard, who in turn was succeeded by his son Friedrich Otto.

THE INTELLECTUAL LEGACY OF THE PADRES PAÚLES AND THE RARE BOOKS COLLECTION OF SEMINARIO MAYOR DE SAN CARLOS Aloysius Lopez Cartagenas “If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson The Vincentian Fathers have been at the forefront of the formation of the Filipino clergy since the time of the Spanish occupation. They have been the administrators and formators of seminaries in different areas in the country at some point or other; in particular, the San Carlos Major Seminary in Cebu, which has been recently turned over to the diocesan clergy. The article illustrates the kind of academic, philosophical and theological training that the Vincentian Fathers have provided for the formation of the clergy in Cebu through the books and materials they have left behind, after they turned over the administration. Through this collection of books and references, some dating hundreds of years ago but are still significantly valuable, the seminary, as the paper suggests, has an indispensable tool in its hand to continue the legacy that the Vincentian Fathers have started, as far as the formation of a well-equipped, edified clergy is concerned. O n 21 March 1998, during the closing ceremonies of the school year presided over by the Archbishop of Cebu, Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, the Congregation of the Mission, represented by Fr. Manuel Ginete, formally turned over the administration of Seminario Mayor de San Carlos (Cebu City, Philippines) back to the Diocesan Clergy of Cebu. It had been more than a hundred years since the first Hapag 9, No.
