  • George Washington Wilson (1823-1893)
    George Washington Wilson (1823-1893) Photographically innovative and entrepreneurial in business, Wilson was the most notable, successful and prolific stereo-photographer in Scotland and perhaps the entire UK. Having trained in Edinburgh as an artist, he worked as a miniature portrait painter and art teacher in Aberdeen from 1848. He started experimenting with photography in 1852, probably realising that it could potentially supplant his previous profession. In a short-lived partnership with Hay, he first exhibited stereoviews in 1853 at the Aberdeen Mechanics' Institution. A commission to photograph the construction of Balmoral Castle in 1854-55 led to a long royal association. His photos were used in the form of engravings for Queen Victoria's popular book “My Highland Journal”. His best-selling carte-de-visite of her on a pony held by Brown (judiciously cropped to remove other superfluous retainers) fuelled the gossip surrounding this relationship. His portrait studio in Aberdeen provided steady cashflow and in 1857, to promote his studio, he produced a print grouping together famous Aberdonians, one of the earliest ever examples of a photo-collage. He soon recognised that stereoviews were the key to prosperity and by 1863 had a catalogue of over 400 views from all across the UK, selling them in a wide variety of outlets including railway kiosks and inside cathedrals. His artistic training helped him compose picturesque and beautiful images, but he was also an innovative technician, experimenting on improving photographic techniques, chemistry and apparatus, working closely with camera and lens manufacturers. He was among the very first to publish “instantaneous” views, ranging from a bustling Princes Street, Edinburgh to a charming view of children paddling in the sea, both dating from 1859.

Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, the exhibition considers the King’s public image, taste for the theatrical and exotic, and admiration of French style. Lowther, [c. 1910]. £ 500 Oblong folio album of 24 silver bromide photographic prints, each measuring approximately 295 x 245 mm., mounted on card album leaves, some with the photographer’s stamp in the corner; first illustration with a some stains; original chord-bound card album covers, lettered in gilt ‘Lowther’ on the upper cover and with the ‘L’ monogram and coronet in one corner; a little worn. Inscribed ‘Aug. 11th 1933 With all good wishes yours very truly Lonsdale.’ Lowther Castle, designed by the young Robert Smirke (1781-1867) in 1806 forms the centrepiece of this collection of photographs which include several near and far views of the building itself, gardens and the surrounding lakeland countryside. The late nineteenth century was a time of great change at Lowther. Hugh Lonsdale, the 5 th Earl - known as ‘Lordy’ or ‘the Yellow Earl’ - had inherited the estate on the death of his brother in 1882 and developed an extravagant programme of redecoration and garden design as a setting for lavish entertainments and royal visits, which included the German Kaiser in 1895. He was also notable as a sportsman, patron of the Turf and instigator of the Lonsdale Belt for boxing and is thus appropriately photographed here in plus-fours surrounded by his hunting dogs.

Here are brief comments on some of the events in George Washington Wilson's life: - 1853: Exhibited photographs in exhibition (Exhibition not listed below.) - 1854: Appointed by Prince Albert to take photographs of the Royal Family at Balmoral, for which he was paid 3 Gns per day. - 1855: Began to produce annual photo-collages of many of the well known characters of Aberdeen. This brought in business as more people competed to be included in the collages. - 1873: Appointed 'Photographer Royal' to Her Majesty Queen Victoria. - 1880: GWW was selling his views in his Tours of Scotland albums. The purchaser was allowed to choose which photos should be included in their album, from a selection of over 10,000 photos in the GWW Collection. The GW Wilson business continued by his sons following the death of George in 1893. Postcards were sold from 1902 onwards, but the business did not survive against the competition from Valentine & Sons and others. Following the collapse of the company in 1908, Archie Strachan purchased 27,000 G W Wilson negatives and a number of albums, together weighing over five tons!     Explanation of the numbering system used by the GWW and Co. and dating of images Issues surrounding the dating of GWW and Co. images: • There are no business papers for GWW & CO. therefore there is no definitive list to accurately date images. • Originally images would have been numbered consecutively and in chronological order, however the system is not straight forward, even at the beginning of the company. • Each glass plate negative size (Stereoscopic, Imperial, and Cabinet) had a separate numbering system. So a stereo plate could be numbered 500 and show a view of a church but a cabinet plate could be numbered 500 and be a view of something completely different. • When the company introduced dry gelatine plates the numbering system for all of the types of plate size were given the same cataloguing number, superseding the previous system. • Popular views were often re-photographed to keep the image up-to-date, but the image retained its original number, so two plates with the same number can show the view of a location from different years, often decades apart. • Some early plates were cut down to create different print sizes, the plate was then given a new number, so the same exact view can exist with two different numbers.
