Teaching with an Ipad as an untethered tablet
Recently, it has become possible to use an Ipad and AppleTV to project an image on which you can add nota ons (tablet-like). There are great advantages to this setup for teaching:
1. You can make nota ons directly on slides. Much like a tablet, but an Ipad is much lighter than a tablet. An advantage of making nota ons in this way are twofold – first, it slows you down (you write as fast as students write) and second, and more importantly perhaps, it allows you to interact with your lesson material.
2. You can walk around the podium without being tethered to it. You can even walk into the audience and have students write things on the Ipad. This offers a degree of interac vity that is especially useful in large classes.
However, there are also poten al disadvantages, and although they do not outweigh the advantages (in my opinion), you should be aware of these disadvantages:
1. If projec ng to a VGA projector (such as most at UW), you cannot view movies on Youtube from hyperlinks in your pdf presenta on because of copy right issues. You can s ll go directly to Youtube on your Ipad and show them there, but not in full screen mode. Note this isn’t a problem if connec ng an Ipad directly to the projector or if connec ng to an HDMI projector.
2. As of now, the Microso does not support the iPad (but see Onlive Desktop App), so you cannot use PowerPoint files. You can of course create pdfs from PowerPoint files on other computers, but custom anima on won’t work.
3. Se ng up the technology does require a few more steps than simply hooking up to a projector. For those unfamiliar with the Ipad and technologically nervous, this can be a barrier at first (thus this protocol). Once the Apple TV and Airport Express are configured they will remember their se ngs, so se ng up before each lecture should take less than 3 minutes.
Airport Apple TV Projector iPad Express Hints, ps and notes
1. I recommend se ng up the Ipad & AppleTV using a portable projector in your office a few days before you start teaching. It is crucial to configure the Apple TV and Airport Express before your first lecture. It only tkes about 10 minutes
2. It may also be a good idea to try out the setup (once the AppleTV and Airport Express have been ini alized) in your lecture hall when there is no me pressure. Contact CSS (Classroom Support Services) to make a ½ hour appointment with their consultants and try things out. This will also help determine how to streamline the other tasks you have to do to get set up for class (e.g. microphone, screen, etc).
3. If lecturing in a big classroom, you’ll always want the airport express. Otherwise, you have to compete with all your students’ laptops and cell phones for wireless, a ba le you are sure to loose.
4. If using the airport express with LAN, plug it in and turn it on as soon as you get to the classroom. The Network can take 4-5 minutes to get itself set up.
5. Occasionally while lecturing untethered the screen will blip out for 5 seconds or so. The students will panic, but generally this doesn’t occur for more than 5 or so seconds.
6. The straight Ipad-VGA converter is a nice backup for when the AppleTV or the internet fails. Then you are using the Ipad the way you would use a tablet. Alterna vely, bringing your powerpoint on a USB s ck can also serve as a backup (can be plugged straight into a computer)
7. It is worth making your Airport Express network so that the network is only available or visible to you. This may reduce the number of mini-blackouts you get.
8. If your handwri ng is bad, it will probably become even worse on the Ipad (the stylus interface is not perfect). Lectures that require a lot of wri ng will be difficult for you as well as the students – wri ng in phrases (amidst keywords); lis ng items in tables, drawing graphs, etc, is probably a more effec ve way to use this technology. Using caps (rather than cursive) may also increase legibility.
9. The app “OnLive Desktop” is interes ng. It essen ally allows you to use a windows interface on your Ipad. Which presumably means you can use Powerpoint, Word, perhaps even Youtube. This seems promising for those wan ng to use this technology, but invested in the windows opera ng system. However, Onlive works as a ‘cloud’ program. In other words, the app is an interface/portal to a set of servers/computers somewhere else that are running windows. The mode of communica on between your Ipad and this ‘somewhere else’ is your wireless network. Which means that together with the AppleTV you would be relying on addi onal communica ons through your wireless network (Ipad –> OnLive –> Ipad; Ipad –> AppleTV). For this reason, Onlive is currently not likely to work real well – but keep an eye out on this App – it may become more powerful which could make it more useful for this. Supplies/equipment
• Ipad2 or Ipad3 (the orginal iPad's video output is very limited) • Apple TV (version 2 or 3) • Stylus (op onal) • Case or strap that enables one-handed grip on iPad while standing. • Airport Express (if compe on for wireless networks is great – e.g. in Kane Hall, you will need to set up your own password protected network [see appendix for one- me configura on]) • Apple TV Remote (comes with Apple TV – you won’t need this usually, but is useful). • HDMI to VGA video converter (if projec ng onto a VGA projector) • iPad VGA or HDMI connector (connects Ipad directly to projector, use as backup)
Recommended Apps • 2screens or Notes Plus • (to project and annotate pdfs created in keynote or powerpoint or word) • Remote (to control the Apple TV from your Ipad – not necessary for daily use) • Dropbox or ICloud (for accessing files from mul ple devices) • Onlive Desktop • may allow you to use PowerPoint, but not where compe on for bandwidth is high • AirParrot – stream video from a Mac to your iPad (like OnLIve Desktop, but local and Mac only)
Every day in class
3 minutes (assuming ini al Apple TV and Airport Express configura on have been performed).
1. Plug in your Airport Express (op onal: plug in an ethernet cable on the podium to the AIrport Express if you want internet access on the iPad). Allow 2 minutes for it to appear to other devices.
2. Connect your AppleTV to a power supply and a projector (using your HDMI – VGA video converter or an HDMI cable). It takes about 30 seconds to become opera onal.
3. Turn on your Ipad. Go to Se ngs > Wi-Fi. When the Airport Express is ready, select it in the list of networks.
4. Double click the home bu on below the screen on your IPad to reveal a horizontal list of recent applica ons. Swipe to the le . Click on the AirPlay bu on.
If you’ve set up your network right and your Apple TV is a ached, you should be able to choose the Apple TV, turn mirroring on, and viola! Your screen is projected.
5. Open up your presenta on in your program of choice (e.g. 2screens). If the App allows you to annotate, you will now be able to do so and it should project onto the screen. In 2screens, don’t forget to ‘leave’ the whiteboard mode when you are done annota ng, otherwise the program won’t save a pdf of your scrawls (at least, if you care about saving them).
Airport Apple TV Projector iPad Express One- me Configura on of Apple TV and Airport Express
This is required when using Airport Express & Apple TV. ~10 minutes
Both your Apple TV and your iPad need to talk to the same wireless network. You can use the UW network ("University of Washington") but you'll be sharing bandwidth with others nearby, which may cause unacceptably slow video performance. Using a hidden, secure Airport Express network provides the best performance possible.
1. Configure the Airport Express first, then Apple TV. If you won't be using Airport Express then ignore steps 2 – 4.
2. Plug in the power cord for the Airport Express.
3. Plug one end of an ethernet cable into your computer and the other end into the Airport Express.
4. Launch Airport U lity on your computer (Macs: /Applica ons/U li es; Windows: download from h p://support.apple.com/kb/DL1391.
5. Connect the Apple TV to a projector via an HDMI cable or HDMI – VGA converter and change the input (source) on the projector to either VGA or HDMI as appropriate.
6. Once the Apple TV is projec ng use its remote to navigate the menus. Remember to point the remote at the Apple TV itself – not the screen.
7. Follow the instruc ons on the following two pages to configure the Airport Express and the Apple TV. Once these devices are configured they will remember their se ngs, even when unplugged.
