Descriptive Summary Creator: Anthony F. Dumas and Museum of the City of New York Title: Collection of Anthony F. Dumas theatre drawings Dates: ca. 1916 - 1942 Abstract: Pen-and-ink drawings by Anthony F. Dumas of theatres located in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. Quantity: 229 items Accession numbers: 75.200.1-169; 75.207.1-60 Language: English Biographical Note: Not much information is available about the life and training of Anthony F. Dumas. His death certificate records his birth on August 30, 1882 in Saint-Anne, France. Both his parents were French, but when he immigrated to the United States is unclear. The death certificate lists his trade as “ornamental plaster” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He and his wife Marie lived in the Bronx and were residents of New York City for at least the last 17 years of his life. He died at home on January 21, 1943. Scope and Content The collection contains 228 pen-and-ink of stage and film theatres located in the five boroughs of New York City. All works were created by Anthony F. Dumas sometime between ca. 1916 and 1942. Also included is a floor plan and exterior drawing of the artist’s home. Theatre drawings depict front exteriors and most often feature only one building on a single page. There are at least three works that group performance spaces from different parts of the United States with New York City theatres (75.200.31, 75.200.37 and 75.207.50). Dumas worked from photographs to capture early theatres before they were demolished. He may have also drawn from life. Arrangement The collection is arranged by accession number and divided into three series based on geography. This arrangement was implemented at the time of accessioning. Objects in Series I begin at the southern tip of Manhattan and work northward to the Bronx and Queens then ending with Staten Island. Series I: Theatres in Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island Series II: Brooklyn Theatres Series III: Dumas residence Collection is located onsite at the Museum’s Curatorial Center.
