Penelope’s Daughters Barbara Dell’Abate-Çelebi A feminist perspective of the myth of Penelope in Annie Leclerc’s Toi, Pénélope, Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad and Silvana La Spina’s Penelope At the origin of Western literature stands Queen Penelope—faithfully waiting for her husband to come home: keeping house, holding on to the throne, keeping the suitors at arm’s length, preserving Odysseus’ place and memory, deserted for the pursuit of war and adventures, and bringing up a son alone, but always keeping the marriage intact. Yet recently the character of Penelope, long the archetype of abandoned, faithful, submissive, passive wife, has been reinterpreted by feminist criticism and re-envisioned by three modern novels — in French, English, and Italian — to emerge as a central, strong, self-determining, and erotically liberated female icon. Her character “is permeated with new and more complex representations of feminine diversity that, by subverting the roles attested by the canon, break with stereotypes and pursue autonomy.” Part one of this book covers “Feminist Literary Criticism and the Theme of Penelope”; part two considers “Penelope in Three (Feminist) Revisionist Novels” – by Annie Leclerc, Margaret Atwood and Silvana La Spina. These feminist revisions of myths of womanhood and rewritings of female archetypes from a feminist perspective broaden the definition of femininity to include new possibilities and more inclusive representations of female identity. Barbara Dell’Abate-Çelebi is the author of L’alieno dentro: Percorso semiotico alle origini del romanzo femminista italiano (2011) and La letteratura in gioco (2016). She is Assistant Professor in the Department of English Translation and Interpreting at Beykent University and Visiting Instructor in the Department of French Literature at Galatasaray University, both in Istanbul. She holds a degree in Modern Languages and Literatures from the University of Naples ‘L’Orientale’ and a PhD in Italian literature from the University of Istanbul. She has taught Italian, English and French literature at the University of Istanbul, Koç University and Université Libre de Bruxelles. We learn how Penelope’s image alternated from that of an adulter- ess to a faithful spouse awaiting the return of a lost husband and lover. The book attributes the changes in attitude and ways of representation of Penel- ope to the then current political and social status quo. In a style that addresses both the professional scholar and the beginner in literary theory, chapter one traces the emergence, growth and develop- ment of the feminist movement from its inception around the early 19th cen- tury to the postmodern era. We learn, for example, that Mary Wollstonecraft, Mary Shelley’s mother, was described by a later generation feminist critic as a “hyena in petticoats” and a “philosophical wanton.” We also learn that some feminist scholars view the sexual relation as a beating by the penis or a symbolic form of male aggression. The discussion invokes an array of in- fluential female scholars who shaped the feminist movements in the western world, including Simone de Beauvoir, Betty Friedan, Kate Millett, Mary Ell- mann, Elaine Showalter, Sandra Gilbert, and many more. Literary and phil- osophical movements that influenced feminist thinking are dealt with and elucidated too. Structural theories, we learn, such as formalism, new crit- icism, and most linguistic-based readings of texts are opposed by the var- ious feminist movements as they have alienated the text from its cultural and historical signification. Chapter two provides a succinct and interesting introduction to the his- torical and mythical origins of Homer and his composition. With scholarly precision, the author documents the writings of various critics who shed light on Homer, his work and his world. Ulysses gains his mythical reputa- tion, the author tells us, because of his refusal to accept mortality at the ex- pense of denying recognition of the human condition. The chapter also ex- amines how Penelope moved from the marginal position assigned by earlier critics to occupy a central position in the epic as judged by postmodernist in- terpreters. The chapter refers to seminal scholars such as Marie Madelaine Mactoux, Marylin Arthur-Katz, Nancy Felson-Rubin, Ioanna Papadopolou- Belmehdi, and Adriana Cavarero, among others whose perceptions of Pe- nelope are similarly insightful and provoking. 9 10 penelope’s daughters Chapter three compares the original Penelope with the Penelope of Toi, Pénélope by Annie Leclerc. The analysis of the texts is a tour de force through two diff erent mind sets: one is Homeric and the other is contemporary. In a critical reading of the two Penelopes’ social and psychological situatedness, Dr. Dell’Abate Celebi argues that memory and oblivion are among the mo- tives of modern Penelope’s attachment to her absent spouse. Chapter four examines The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood. We learn that Atwood’s career not only involves writing about “power politics” be- tween lovers but also gives voice to silenced and marginalized females in mythical and other narratives. With this in mind, the chapter animates an altogether new Penelope who is very diff erent from her Homeric namesake. Is the new Penelope wicked, faithful, treacherous, dangerous, and subver- sive? Answers lie in the way Penelope is analyzed in this chapter. Penelope by Silvana La Spina is the subject of the fi fth and last chapter of the book. Penelope is viewed from a modern Italian feminist perspective as a victim of institutionalized violence against women. We see a Penelope vocalizing the humiliation and violence infl icted upon women in the name of social values and norms. The argument in the chapter is informative, ex- citing, and inspiring. Throughout, the text is infused with French and Italian quotations that add a touch of lyrical sweetness to the reading. For those who cannot read French and Italian or infer the meaning from the context, English transla- tion is provided in the endnotes. The original idea dates back to 2007 when I was asked to speak of the literary character of Penelope in a course dedicated to the Odyssey within the program of Ital- ian Literature at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). I was just com- pleting my Ph.D. thesis on Italian feminist writers and certainly, I thought, Penelope did not re-enter within classical feminist or proto-feminist figures. As I remembered her from my readings of the Odyssey in high school and university she was utterly at the antipodes of it, rather a passive and subordinated character, secondary to the super-hero Ulysses. However I had quite a lot to discover. I started my research in the ULB library where I came across mainly with French sources (re-elaborated in the second chap- ter dedicated to the myth of Penelope) centering mainly on the idea drawn from Ioanna Papadopoulou-Belmehdi’s re-interpretation of Penelope as the central character of the Odyssey, the one who allows with her memory the return of Ulysses to Ithaca.

    Monica Bottez ANOTHER PENELOPE: MARGARET ATWOOD’S THE PENELOPIAD Keywords: epic; quest; hybrid genre; indeterminacy; postmodernism Abstract: The paper sets out to present The Penelopiad as a rewriting of Homer’s Odyssey with Penelope as the narrator. Using the Homeric intertext as well as other Greek sources collected by Robert Graves in his book The Greek Myths and Tennyson‟s “Ulysses,” it evidences the additions that the new narrative perspective has stimulated Atwood to imagine. The Penelopiad is read as propounding a new genre, the female epic or romance where the heroine’s quest is analysed on analogy with the traditional romance pattern. The paper dwells on the contradictory and parody- like versions of events and characters embedded in the text: has Penelope been the perfect patient devoted wife, a cunning lustful pretender, or the High Priestess of an Artemis cult? In conclusion, the reader can never know the truth, being tied up in the utterly puzzling indeterminacy of meaning specific to postmodernism. The title of Margaret Atwood‟s novella makes the reader expect a rewriting of Homer‟s Odyssey, which is precisely what the author does in order to enrich it with new interpretations; since myths and legends are the repository of our collective desires, fears and longings, their actuality can never be exhausted: Atwood has used mythology in much the same way she has used other intertexts like folk tales, fairy tales, and legends, replaying the old stories in new contexts and from different perspectives – frequently from a woman‟s point of view – so that the stories shimmer with new meanings.

    223 Homer's Odyssey and the Image of Penelope in Renaissance Art Giancarlo FIORENZA The epic heroine Penelope captured the Renaissance literary and artistic imagination, beginning with Petrarch and the recovery of Homer's poetry through its translation into Latin. Only a very small number of humanists in the 14'h century were able to read Homer in the Greek original, and Petrarch's friend Leontius Pilatus produced for him long-awaited Latin translations of the Iliad 1 and Odyssey in the 1360s • Profoundly moved by his ability to finally compre­ hend the two epics (albeit in translation), Petrarch composed a remarkable letter addressed to Homer in which he compares himself to Penelope: "Your Penelope cannot have waited longer nor with more eager expectation for her Ulysses than I did for you. At last, though, my hope was fading gradually away. Except for a few of the opening lines of certain books, from which there seemed to flash upon me the face of a friend whom I had been longing to behold, a momen­ tary glimpse, dim through the distance, or, rather, the sight of his streaming hair, as he vanished from my view- except for this no hint of a Latin Homer had come to me, and I had no hope of being able ever to see you face to face"'. The themes of anticipation and fulfillment, and longing and return that are associated with the figure of Penelope coincide with the rediscovery of ancient texts. To encounter Homer for the first time in a language with which one was 3 familiar was as much a personal as a literary experience • As Nancy Struever observes, Petrarch's Le Familiari, a collection of letters addressed to contemporary friends and ancient authors, values friendship and intimate exchange because 4 it leads to knowledge and affective reward • Books on their own (Le Familiari, XII, 6) constituted surrogate friends with whom Petrarch could correspond, con­ verse, exchange ideas, and share his affections.

    Vanderbilt Undergraduate Research Journal, Vol. 11 Weaving a Way to Nostos: Odysseus and Feminine Mêtis in the Odyssey Grace LaFrentz Abstract. My paper examines the gendered nature of Odysseus’ mêtis, a Greek word describing characteristics of cleverness and intelligence, in Homer’s Odyssey. While Odysseus’ mêtis has been discussed in terms of his storytelling, disguise, and craftsmanship, I contend that in order to fully understand his cleverness, we must place Odysseus’ mêtis in conversation with the mêtis of the crafty women who populate the epic. I discuss weaving as a stereotypically feminine manifestation of mêtis, arguing that Odysseus’ reintegration into his home serves as a metaphorical form of weaving—one that he adapts from the clever women he encounters on his journey home from Troy. Athena serves as the starting point for my discussion of mêtis, and I then turn to Calypso and Circe—two crafty weavers who attempt to ensnare Odysseus on their islands. I also examine Helen, whom Odysseus himself does not meet, but whose weaving is importantly witnessed by Odysseus’ son Telemachus, who later draws upon the craft of weaving in his efforts to help Odysseus restore order in his home. The last woman I present is Penelope, whose clever and prolonged weaving scheme helps her evade marriage as she awaits Odysseus’ return, and whose lead Odysseus follows in his own prolonged reentry into his home. I finally demonstrate the way that Odysseus reintegrates himself into his household through a calculated and metaphorical act of weaving, arguing that it is Odysseus’ willingness to embrace a more feminine model of mêtis embodied by the women he encounters that sets him apart from his fellow male warriors and enables his successful homecoming.

McBride, PhD University of Connecticut, 2017 The objective of this dissertation is to examine the tendency on the part of several québécois women authors from the 20th century to create alternative feminine biographies for forgotten, undervalued, or misrepresented women from the past. Given the complex relationship the Québécois have with their provincial history, and the central role chauvinistic representations of women and the “Québec national text” play in safeguarding the québécois cultural identity, contemporary women writers from Québec are singularly poised to resurrect, recreate, revive, and rewrite the feminine historical experience into the traditional discourse of History. From Québec’s most famous woman writer, Anne Hébert, to a lesser known militant lesbian playwright, Jovette Marchessault, and other québécois women writers along the spectrum, there exists a common trope: plays and novels in which homo- or heterodiegetic women narrators feel compelled to (re)tell another woman’s feminine (hi)story. Some examples of this practice appear initially to be somewhat traditional works of historical fiction, others ignore almost entirely the referential world beyond the confines of their pages.
