Gardens' Bulletin Singapore 57 (2005) 269-278 269 New Tristaniopsis Peter G.Wilson & J.T.Waterh. (Myrtaceae) From Borneo P. S. ASHTON Arnold Arboretum, Harvard University, 22 Divinity Avenue Cambridge MA 02138, U.S.A. and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Richmond, Surrey, TW9 3AB, U.K. Abstract Three new species, Tristaniopsis kinabaluensis P.S.Ashton, T. microcmpa P.S.Ashton and T. wbiginosa S.Teo ex P.S.Ashton, and three new subspecies, Tristaniopsis kinabaluensis ssp. silamensis P.S.Ashton, T. merguensis ssp. tavaiensis P.S.Ashton and T. whitiana ssp. monostemon P.S.Aston, are described from northern Borneo, in preparation for a treatment of the Myrtaceae for the Tree Flora of Sabah and Sarawak. Introduction Species definition in Tristaniopsis Peter G.Wilson & J.T.Waterh. (formerly Tristania R. Br.) has proven to be even more difficult in Borneo than among the notorious and much larger myrtaceous genus Syzygium Gaertn. Leaf size and shape is variable. The number of stamens, which are clustered opposite the petals, is characteristic of each species but, although at most 10 per cluster, may vary in exceptional cases. Here, we adopt a conservative species concept, awaiting regional monographic and phylogenetic research. Eventually, and with further flowering collections, some at least of the infrapecific taxa described here may be raised to species rank. All specimens examined have been at the Kew herbarium unless otherwise stated. 1. Tristaniopsis kinabaluensis P.S.Ashton, sp. llOV. • Language Use and Attitudes As Indicators of Subjective Vitality: the Iban of Sarawak, Malaysia
Vol. 15 (2021), pp. 190–218 http://nflrc.hawaii.edu/ldc http://hdl.handle.net/10125/24973 Revised Version Received: 1 Dec 2020 Language use and attitudes as indicators of subjective vitality: The Iban of Sarawak, Malaysia Su-Hie Ting Universiti Malaysia Sarawak Andyson Tinggang Universiti Malaysia Sarawak Lilly Metom Universiti Teknologi of MARA The study examined the subjective ethnolinguistic vitality of an Iban community in Sarawak, Malaysia based on their language use and attitudes. A survey of 200 respondents in the Song district was conducted. To determine the objective eth- nolinguistic vitality, a structural analysis was performed on their sociolinguistic backgrounds. The results show the Iban language dominates in family, friend- ship, transactions, religious, employment, and education domains. The language use patterns show functional differentiation into the Iban language as the “low language” and Malay as the “high language”. The respondents have positive at- titudes towards the Iban language. The dimensions of language attitudes that are strongly positive are use of the Iban language, Iban identity, and intergenera- tional transmission of the Iban language. The marginally positive dimensions are instrumental use of the Iban language, social status of Iban speakers, and prestige value of the Iban language. Inferential statistical tests show that language atti- tudes are influenced by education level. However, language attitudes and useof the Iban language are not significantly correlated. By viewing language use and attitudes from the perspective of ethnolinguistic vitality, this study has revealed that a numerically dominant group assumed to be safe from language shift has only medium vitality, based on both objective and subjective evaluation.

MARINE ECOLOGY PROGRESS SERIES Vol. 153: 283-291,1997 Published July 10 Mar Ecol Prog Ser Identifying the spawning estuaries of the tropical shad, terubok Tenualosa toli, using otolith microchemistry David A. ~ilton'~',Simon R. chenery2,Margaret J. arme er', Stephen J. M. Blaber1 'CSIRO Division of Marine Research. PO Box 120, Cleveland, Queensland 4163. Australia '~nalyticalGeochemistry Group, British Geological Survey, Keyworth, Nottingham NG12 5GG. United Kingdom ABSTRACT. The tropical shad, terubok Tenualosa toh, is known only from 2 large estuaries and the adlacent coast of northwest Borneo. Populations of this culturally and commerc~allyimportant specles have fallen to dangerously low levels during the 19905 In an attempt to conserve the species, the Sarawak state government has set up fisheries reserves to protect flsh during spawning in the estuar- les of the Lupar and Lassa rivers. Terubok are protandrous hermaphrodites that, at l+ years old, migrate to the ~nshoreareas of the adjacent coast after initially spawnlng as males To assess the effec- tiveness of the conservation measures we had to confirm that terubok spawn only in the 2 known spawning areas. We d~dthis by examining the elementdl composition at the nuclei of otoliths of fish using the new technique of LA-ICPMS (laser ablat~on-inducti\~elpcoupled plasmd mass spectron~etry). Otoliths of fish collected from 7 coastal sites and both estuarine spawnlng areas in 1994 had similar ele- mental composition. This confirmed that all fish were probably spawned in 1 of the 2 estuaries. How- ever, otoliths of fish collectcd from 2 of 8 coastal sites sampled in 1995 had significantly different ele- mental composition from the fish from the Lupar or Lassa estuaries.

  • Accessibility and Development in Rural Sarawak. a Case Study of the Baleh River Basin, Kapit District, Sarawak, Malaysia
Accessibility and development in rural Sarawak. A case study of the Baleh river basin, Kapit District, Sarawak, Malaysia. Regina Garai Abdullah A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2016 School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand i Abstract To what degree does accessibility to markets correlate with levels of development? This is an important question for those living in remote, underdeveloped parts of Southeast Asia during the final phases of de-agrarianisation. My study recounts the experience of rural-based Iban households living in the Baleh river basin of the Kapit District (population of 54,200) within a day or less travel by river to the small market town of Kapit (with a population of 18,000). With no connecting roads to the rest of Sarawak and reliant almost entirely on river transport, the local economy remains underdeveloped and is losing population. My field work among 20 villages in three accessibility zones of the Baleh river basin was undertaken over the three month period of May-July 2014. Structured interviews were conducted with 20 village headmen (tuai rumah), 82 heads of household, and 82 individuals within the households. Data was also systematically collected on 153 other individuals, including both residents and non-resident members of these bilik-families. My conceptual framework draws on von Thünen’s model of agricultural land use in order to generate expectations about the possible effects of market accessibility. While the sale of vegetables and other commodities accords with expected patterns, most rural households are in fact dependent on other, largely non-agricultural sources of income.

Therefore the main objective of this study is to understand the meaning of empowerment from the world-view of Bidayuh community itself. This study using abductive research strategy and a phenomenology research paradigm which is based on idealist ontology and constructionist epistemology.
