These evocative sounds linger in the soul long after the music fades. PROGRAM #: EMN 20-04 RELEASE: July 13, 2020 Salomone Rossi: Revolutionary Jewish composer Salomone Rossi was a musician who served the Gonzaga court in Mantua. They valued him so highly that he was given a relatively large amount of personal freedom, while other members of the Jewish faith were restricted. -

Centennial Season - Forty-sixth Concert Debut and Encore Series "Bonus" Concert About the Artist Barbara Nissman's career began on this campus where she arrived as the recipient of a four-year scholarship. She continued to win awards while in college, culminating with the Stanley Medal, the School of Music's highest honor. After receiving her bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees at The University of Michigan, studying with pianist Gyorgy Sandor, Miss Nissman made her Ann Arbor professional debut at the 1971 May Festival as the "Alumni Night" featured soloist . with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Subsequently, Eugene Ormandy invited her to perform with them again the following season, and from this beginning grew her successes in the United States. Miss Nissman enjoys success on both sides of the Atlantic. In America, her consistent repeat engagements with Stanislaw Skrowaczewski and the Minnesota Orchestra, Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops, and Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra attest to her artistry. She has worked with Italian conductor Riccardo Muti and tours regularly with orchestras throughout England, Holland, Germany, and Scandinavia. -

Interstellar Music - by Mike Overly Let's imagine that you could toss a message in a bottle faster than a speeding bullet into the cosmic ocean of outer space. What would you seal inside it for anyone, or anything, to open some day in the distant future, in a galaxy far, far away from our solar system? Well, imagine no more because it's been done! Thirty-five years ago, NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft carrying earthly images and sounds toward the Stars. Voyager 1 was launched on September 5, 1977, from Cape Canaveral, Florida and Voyager 2 was sent on its way August 20 of that same year. Voyager 1 is now 11 billion miles away from earth and is the most distant of all human-made objects. Everyday, it flies another million miles farther. In fact, Voyager 1 and 2 are so far out in space that their radio signals, traveling at the speed of light, take 16 hours to reach Earth. These radio signals are captured daily by the big dish antennas of the Deep Space Network and arrive at a strength of less than one femtowatt, a millionth of a billionth of a watt. Wow! Both Voyagers are headed towards the outer boundary of the solar system, known as the heliopause. This is the region where the Sun's influence wanes and interstellar space waxes. Also, the heliopause is where the million-mile-per-hour solar winds slow down to about 250,000 miles per hour. The Voyagers have reached these solar winds, also known as termination shock, and should cross the heliopause in another 10 to 20 years. -

PRESENTER BIOGRAPHIES Anthony, Wayne Wayne Anthony is a thirty-year veteran of the arts scene in the Toledo area. He has been on the faculties of Maumee Valley Country Day School, Lourdes University, Cedarville University, and Owens Community College. He was the conductor of the Perrysburg Symphony Chorale, the Ballet Theatre of Toledo Orchestra, and the presently heads the SonoNovo Chamber Orchestra. He has been awarded a number of grants for his compositions including the Prix de Nadie Boulanger from the École Americane des Artes in Fontainbleau, France, and most recently was named a semi-finalist in the American Prize for Compostion, Theatre/Opera/Ballet division. His is a pianist and organist and is a member of the Anthony/Brown Piano duo and the American Guild of Organists. He has just returned from two-year hiatus in Boston where he served as organist at Church of Our Saviour Episcopal in Middleboro and was on the faculty of the Bay Colony Performing Arts Academy in Foxboro. AtWood, Thomas Mr. Thomas Atwood is an Associate Professor of Information Literacy for The College of University Libraries at The University of Toledo. His work has appeared in the Journal of Religious & Theological Information, Children’s Literature, College & Undergraduate Libraries, Names: A Journal of Onomastics, and The Journal of Academic Librarianship. He currently serves as the subject bibliographer to the Department of Music. Batzner, Jay Jay C. Batzner (b. 1974) is a composer and zazen practitioner. Jay’s music has been performed at new music festivals such as Society for Composers, Inc., College Music Society, Society for Electro- Acoustic Music in the US, and Electronic Music Midwest as well as instrument performance societies including the National Flute Association, International Horn Society, and North American Saxophone Alliance. -

Mr. Catarino likes to volunteer his time outside of his teaching duties to non profit organi- zations such as the Detroit ACM SIGGRAPH Professional Chapter, which he is the cur- rent vice president of the chapter. Along with volunteering his professional skills as The Clean Love Project’s graphic artist/web developer. He studied in Basel with Oscar Ghiglia at the Musikakademie and with Hopkinson Smith at the Schola Cantorum. He has given concerts in major venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall (New York), Covent Garden (London), the Palaude la Música Catalana (Barcelona), the Teatro Real (Madrid), the Teatro Colón (Buenos Aires), the Wiener Philharmoniker (Vienna), and the Konzerthaus (Berlin). Díaz-Latorre performs regularly with such world-renowned ensembles as Hesperion XXI, La Capella Reial de Catalunya, and Le 24 JUNE // DIAZ-LATORRE Concert des Nations. He has also performed with Al Ayre Español, the Orquesta Nacional de España, Concerto Vocale, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, and Concerto Köln. -
