E-mail: [email protected] INTRODUCTION Citations are an important component of any research activity (i.e. any research paper or thesis). It plays a major role and contributes to the quality of literature acceptance by researchers. Sometimes, common mistakes are occurring during the bibliographic composition such as references not in prescribed format or incomplete and outdated references. Such type of common errors can be avoided by using reference management software/tools. Students or researchers use citations in their research article or thesis citation/bibliography as the same are mandatory. The silly type of errors can be completely avoided by using reference/bibliography management tools.2 Utility of this citation implementation is well established among researchers and students. The bare-bones cosecant of any summons administration software is to store, systematize, initialize appeal within the manuscript. By using of this software researchers can willingly trace of ponder and ease to alter for expert written document they engrave. There are several software parcel which are valid for composing citations similar to Reference Manager, Endnote and Ref Works. But, these are owned versions and expensive for researchers scholars, scientists, etc. Especially expert work always esteem as most viable. Reference management software, citation management software, company reference software or personal bibliographic management software is software for scholars and authors to use for recording and utilizing bibliographic citations (references) as well as managing project references 198 NCALUC-2019 on Role of Agricultural Libraries in the Networked Digital Environment either as a company or an individual. Once a citation has been recorded, it can be used time and again in generating bibliographies, such as lists of references in scholarly books, articles and essays. Reference management software has been driven by the rapid expansion of scientific literature. References and bibliography lists are available in articles, theses, books, etc. All the related information regarding any article or other publication as – author name(s), titles of articles, books and journals name, date of publication, volume and issue numbers of articles and page numbers for identification and tracking of publications. Citations are various styles of citation formats such as American Chemical Society (ACS) style, Modern Language Association (MLA) style, American Psychological Association (APA) style, Chicago Manual of Style (CMS), etc. It is essential for research, education, social activities and publications to present the knowledge. It is a violation (person’s ownership/stealing idea of others) of copyright act, if failing the citation. The important of citations in any manuscript is as follows- P To acknowledge other work and give proper credit to the work of others as well as to avoid the risk of plagiarism. P To enable readers to track the used sources to avoid the overlapping research. Objectives P Discuss about various citation management software and features. P To explain about various citation management software for reference management and its application for publication of research. P To motivate research scholars and create their own databases to disseminate information. What is Citation Management Software? According to Online Dictionary Library and Information Science (2017), a reference management software is “Application software designed to enable researchers to collect bibliographic references quickly and easily, cite them properly, organize them effectively, and share them with others”. Another definition has given by Telstar’s Dictionary (2017), a reference management software “enables an author to build a library of references by entering the details of each reference in a structured format. They usually support mechanisms for organizing sets of references by tagging or use of ‘folders’, and will generate references, citations or bibliographies in a range of referencing styles”. Why Citation Management Software? Citation management software is very useful for researches and others like as authors, scientists and librarian etc., for handling reference and utilizing bibliographic citations data collection. Reference data can be collected/handled manually but software provides greater flexibility and efficiency manage. The need of the Citation Management Software is highly essential because of the following important reasons: P Citations, references, bibliographies are fundamental and given the proper directions to the new good research. A Comparative Analysis of Reference Management Software in the Digital Era 199 P They serve as new directions for foundation research and Effective managing of references is very important. P Collecting, organizing, using references is one of the tiresome job and time consuming process. P It is most complicated aspect of being a researcher and handling is a tedious work. Features Main Key features of citation management software (CMS) are given as under: P The software is user friendly and it is easy to plug in with MS-Word. P Open Source Software (OSS) are also available in the market. Researchers are use free OSS and manage their citation data by the same. P It works online and offline mode and no need of extra supporting software for the same. P Data manage by software is faster than the manual collecting and writing reference. P Managing data from software is error free and easy to handling like as import and export bibliographic record in different file format. P Easy to save and organize, share your bibliographical information to others. And Importing/ exporting of citations from databases and websites. P Easy gather metadata from PDF, websites and other documents and offer data storage options. P Standard formats like RIS and BibTex to apply in research. P Organization of citations within the RM database and adding notes and annotations to citations. P Searching and sorting within the database for different parameter. Common Citations Management Tools (Software) The common citation or reference software are discussed as under. It also provides details of various common feature of the software, supported OS and other properties of the software. MENDELEY The Mendeley was developed by three German PhD students in London in the end of year 2007 and after this software of mendely was in the name of Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleyev who developed the periodic table of elements and Gregor Mende who is known as father of modern genetics” (Mendeley, 2010). It has special provision of additional space on purchase separately for the institutional version of the software. Mendeley announce in the year of 2013, that the software also installed in iPhone and iPad. Mendeley is a tool who help us to manage citations and PDFs using a desktop client version or through web version for network environment. Mendeley incorporates plug-in for Word or OpenOffice, so you can create citations/bibliographies as you write a research articles. It is easy to use and also freely available 2GB storage for the desktop version. It is taken over by Elsevier recently and It established in 2008. This aim was achieved by comparing three software. The main results of this paper were concluded by comparing three software based on the experiment. The novelty of this paper is the comparison of researcher’s reference management software and it has showed that Mendeley reference management software can import more data from the Google Scholar for researchers. This finding could help to know researchers to use the reference management software. Keywords: Reference management software, comparison and researchers 1. Introduction Reference management software maintains a database to references and creates bibliographies and the reference lists for the written works. It makes easy to read and to record the elements for the reference comprises such as the author’s name, year of publication, and the title of an article, etc. (Reiss & Reiss, 2002). Reference Management Software is usually used by researchers, technologists, scientists, and authors, etc. to keep their records and utilize the bibliographic citations; hence it is one of the most complicated aspects among researchers. Formatting references as a matter of fact depends on a variety of citation styles which have been made the citation manager very essential for researchers at all levels (Gilmour & Cobus-Kuo, 2011). Reference management software is popularly known as bibliographic software, citation management software or personal bibliographic file managers (Nashelsky & Earley, 1991).

You need to nd related literature, take notes, draft the thesis, and eventually write the nal document and create the bibliography. Many books explain how to perform a literature survey and how to write scholarly literature in general and a thesis in particular (e.g. [1-9]). However, these books barely, if at all, cover software tools that help in performing these tasks. This is surprising, because great software tools that can facilitate the daily work of students and researchers are available and many of them for free. In this tutorial, we present a new method to reviewing scholarly literature and drafting a thesis using mind mapping software, PDF readers, and reference managers. This tutorial focuses on writing a PhD thesis. However, the presented methods are likewise applicable to planning and writing a bachelor thesis or master thesis. This tutorial is special, because it integrates the management of PDF les, the relevant content in PDFs (bookmarks), and references with mind mapping and word processing software.

  • Studies and Analysis of Reference Management Software: a Literature Review
Studies and analysis of reference management software: a literature review Jesús Tramullas Ana Sánchez-Casabón {jesus,asanchez}@unizar.es Dept .of Library & Information Science, University of Zaragoza Piedad Garrido-Picazo [email protected] Dept. of Computer and Software Engineering, University of Zaragoza Abstract: Reference management software is a well-known tool for scientific research work. Since the 1980s, it has been the subject of reviews and evaluations in library and information science literature. This paper presents a systematic review of published studies that evaluate reference management software with a comparative approach. The objective is to identify the types, models, and evaluation criteria that authors have adopted, in order to determine whether the methods used provide adequate methodological rigor and useful contributions to the field of study. Keywords: reference management software, evaluation methods, bibliography. 1. Introduction and background Reference management software has been a useful tool for researchers since the 1980s. In those early years, tools were made ad-hoc, and some were based on the dBase II/III database management system (Bertrand and Bader, 1980; Kunin, 1985). In a short period of time a market was created and commercial products were developed to provide support to this type of information resources. The need of researchers to systematize scientific literature in both group and personal contexts, and to integrate mechanisms into scientific production environments in order to facilitate and expedite the process of writing and publishing research results, requires that these types of applications receive almost constant attention in specialized library and information science literature. The result of this interest is reflected, in bibliographical terms, in the publication of numerous articles almost exclusively devoted to describing, analyzing, and comparing the characteristics of several reference management software products (Norman, 2010).

  • Mendeley Mendeley Is a Reference and Citation Manager Available for Free up to 2 GB of Web Storage (More Storage Is Available for $55 Per Year)
Mendeley Mendeley is a reference and citation manager available for free up to 2 GB of web storage (more storage is available for $55 per year). Mendeley is available as a desktop app, mobile app, as well as online. An MS Word extension allows users to connect to and cite their references while writing. Mendeley allows users to add resources in three ways. First, one may upload a PDF to Mendeley. Mendeley stores the PDF and allows the user to comment on and write notes in the PDF. Users may also enter sources manually, in cases where no PDF is present. For this entry approach, a few templates are available for the most common resource types. Users may also use the web extension to download source information from the web. Once sources have been entered, users can then then organize their sources in a variety of ways. The most prevalent use is through folders, which allow users to categorize sources by topic or project. However, users can also create tags for their files and sources so that they can search for keywords or topics that are important to them. Points in favor: • In-app PDF reader with commentary ability Points against: • Surprising lack of resource templates and information fields (e.g. no template for a conference paper or a book with translator). • MS Word extension has bugs that cause it to crash. Screenshots: Microsoft Word Citation Generator Although we tested Microsoft Word primarily as a writing app, the program includes a citation generator which was tested for facility and accuracy alongside the other reference management apps.1 Like other apps, MS Word has templates for common and uncommon resource types, including book, journal, and sound recording.

  • Aigaion: a Web-Based Open Source Software for Managing the Bibliographic References
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by E-LIS repository Aigaion: A Web-based Open Source Software for Managing the Bibliographic References Sanjo Jose ([email protected]) Francis Jayakanth ([email protected]) National Centre for Science Information, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore – 560 012 Abstract Publishing research papers is an integral part of a researcher's professional life. Every research article will invariably provide large number of citations/bibliographic references of the papers that are being cited in that article. All such citations are to be rendered in the citation style specified by a publisher and they should be accurate. Researchers, over a period of time, accumulate a large number of bibliographic references that are relevant to their research and cite relevant references in their own publications. Efficient management of bibliographic references is therefore an important task for every researcher and it will save considerable amount of researchers' time in locating the required citations and in the correct rendering of citation details. In this paper, we are reporting the features of Aigaion, a web-based, open-source software for reference management. 1. Introduction A citation or bibliographic citation is a reference to a book, article, web page, or any other published item. The reference will contain adequate details to facilitate the readers to locate the publication. Different citation systems and styles are being used in different disciplines like science, social science, humanities, etc. Referencing is also a standardised method of acknowledging the original source of information or idea.
