It began on July 14, 2007 and finished on May 3, 2008. The program was divided into three semesters, the first devoted mainly to lectures covering the fundamentals of journalism, political and social issues in India, as well as historical and legal aspects of media and core courses aimed at honing our media skills. As the year progressed, we focused more on our particular streams, in my case print journalism, which involved producing a student publication. This included a 24 page issue with content from the ‘covering deprivation’ component of the course. In the last semester we continued taking elective courses, produced a 24 page magazine and also worked on research papers and investigative projects. The space and choice provided by the college with regard to covering stories allowed me to engage with issues such as class, gender, caste, development, and more broadly the role of the state in communities, specifically those that are disadvantaged. Below, I have included some articles and project work that address these issues. RAJENDRA PRASAD ROAD, NEW DELHI-110001 Saffronisation of Education (December, 2014) RGICS brief Saffronisation of Education 2 Introduction Prof. Romila Thapar (Third Nikhil Chakravarti Memorial lecture delivered on 26 October 2014) said, ―The ultimate success of a democracy requires that the society be secular. By this I mean a society that goes beyond the co-existence of all religions; a society whose members have equal social and economic rights as citizens, and can exercise these rights irrespective of their religion; a society that is free from control by religious organisations in the activities related to these rights; a society where there is freedom to belong to any or no religion. Public intellectuals would be involved in explaining where secularisation lies and why it is inevitable in a democracy and in defending the secularising process.‖ Education being used a tool for ideological indoctrination of future generations. Concerted efforts are being made to target young minds are being targeted through school curricula and content of books. Rajnath Singh, ―It has been proposed that school textbooks be changed in order to ensure that children be made aware of human values and life values .‖( July 23,2014, Rajya Sabha).In the past 6 months several developments have taken place in the education sector which need to be examined without delay. It is becoming increasingly clear that the RSS agenda of pushing forward the Hindutva agenda in educational institutes starting from schools to universities has gained momentum. It is time for academicians, policy makers and activists to take cognizance of these changes taking place and speaking out against the agenda to impose ideas based on a particular religion. -

Schoenhaus: Indian Dalits and <i>Hindutva</i> Strategies INDIAN DALITS AND HINDUTVA STRATEGIES Indian Dalits and Hindutva Strategies Seth Schoenhaus The Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, is a right-wing nationalist political party charged by its parent organization, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Singh (RSS), to spread its ideology of Hindutva (Hindu nationalism) through the political process.1 In doing this, the BJP has gained national prominence, as seen most recently in its resounding 2014 victory in which Narendra Modi shot to power as Prime Minister of India.2 However, the party has made itself into the stalwart political arm of In- dia’s burgeoning middle class: conservative, fairly wealthy voters who tend to see themselves as the backbone of India’s emerging global might and economic prow- ess.3 In order to increase its share of power, the BJP and other Hindutva organiza- tions have increasingly realized the need to reach out to Scheduled Caste voters, specifically Dalits: those who have largely existed at the bottom of the Indian caste system, below even those considered “untouchable.”4 Dalits often find themselves on the fringe of acceptable Indian society due to their historically low caste posi- tion, so their receptiveness to Hindutva politics is quite curious. -

It has not been submitted before for any degree or examination at any other University. _______________________________________ (Signature of candidate) 13 September 2017 in Johannesburg 2 Abstract: The study attempts to examine the relationship between national identity and political sovereignty and their impact on the emergence of nations, with a special focus on debates around the South African nation-state from 1990 to 2004. Located within the postcolonialism approach, the study looks at national identity through the prism of ethnicity, language, religion and race, while sovereignty is considered through its two component parts, the state and citizenry. By examining two postcolonial contexts, the Arab world and India, the study has developed a framework which is applied to the study of the South African state. This framework identifies nationalism as a glue which holds sovereignty and identity together in the nation-state. The two cases reveal that there is always more than one nationalist narrative, often competing against each other. In the case of the Arab world the study looks at the tensions between pan-Arabism, Arab nationalism and Islamism. In the case of India a secular Indian nationalism has had to compete against a Hindu nationalism. -

Local Mediations and Forms of Resistance, Delhi, Manohar, 2011] Introduction Daniela Berti Over the last few years, works on Hindutva have shifted their focus from the more visible forms of Hindu nationalist mobilisation and violence to the more daily and imperceptible infi ltrations of a ‘soft’ Hindutva culture which has supposedly normalised certain Hindutva clichés in contemporary Indian society. More nuanced works covering diverse areas now show how Hindutva seeps through various spheres of social and cultural life. This may be seen, for instance, in the increasing number of studies showing how a diffuse, so-called metropolitan Hindutva is penetrating popular culture. One example is the work of Sheena Malhotra and Tavishi. -

Zoon Politikon Issue 11, 2020 DOI: 10.4467/2543408XZOP.20.006.13008 http://www.ejournals.eu/Zoon-Politikon/ PEDAGOGICAL CURRICULA AND EDUCATIONAL MEDIA: THE MALIGNANCY OF SAFFRONISED OTHERISATION IN INDIA Titas Biswas* Abstract Saffronisation, a neologism that is derived from the saffron robes worn in particular by holy Hindu men, is used to denote the conflation of linguistic, semiotic and political actions taken by the far-right Hindu nationalist broth- erhood in India to mechanically alter Indian history so that it resonates with the rest of the Hindu nationalist propaganda and policymaking. The process of Saffronisation, when coupled with westernised pedagogical curricula, has been inculcated within and beyond the periphery of educational institutions since the early twentieth century. This paper explores the impact of Saffroni- sation as a socio-political movement on educational institutions, the changes that have been made in textbooks in the recent times and in a holistic sense, attempts to analyse the effects of a neo-Fascist governance on schooling and how it affects students hailing from backgrounds that have been marginal- ised for generations. It is also an exploration of the role of the saffron propa- ganda in enabling otherisation of non-Hindu identities in higher education institutions.. Graduate Program in Political Science The Ohio State University 2011 Dissertation Committee: Irfan Nooruddin, Advisor Sarah Brooks Marcus Kurtz © Copyright by Soundarya Chidambaram 2011 Abstract Despite the recent electoral defeat of the Hindu nationalist party, the BJP, Hindu nationalist organizations led by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) remain a dominant force in several parts of India particularly as most of them operate outside the electoral arena as charitable NGOs providing welfare services such as education and healthcare to poor urban communities. In fact, economic liberalization in India has been accompanied by massive welfare projects initiated by Hindu right-wing organizations. There seems to be a deliberate shift in their strategy with violent tactics being increasingly accompanied by more accepted forms of civil society activities notably among urban slums and tribal populations. This is significant because their successes in co-opting the urban poor through welfare have more often than not also been accompanied by rapid worsening of inter-group relations, increase in religious violence, victimization of minorities and electoral rewards for the BJP down the line, which in turn uses its authority to further facilitate the smooth operation of such organizations through favorable laws and regulations. The literature has failed to answer two important questions about these Hindu nationalist welfare organizations: why there was a shift in strategy in the 1990s and why, despite similar tactics, these organizations do not succeed everywhere.
