Date : 1 diciembre 2016 1 / 23 Cuadernos de Fútbol Revista de CIHEFE https://www.cihefe.es/cuadernosdefutbol Participantes: Una vez más se inscribieron todos los campeones de las federaciones que conformaban la UEFA, salvo Gales, que no tenía campeonato profesional. Posteriormente el Vllaznia se retiró al emparejarse con el Hamburgo por motivos políticos. Con 18 participaciones el CSKA de Sofía y el Benfica de Lisboa eran los equipos con más experiencia en el torneo. Les seguían el todavía poderoso Ajax y el muy modesto Jeunesse d’Esch, con 14. Por España registraba su segunda presencia el Athletic Club, para la anterior había que remontarse a la edición de 1956/57. El equipo bilbaíno, entrenado por Javier Clemente, presentaba un equipo muy joven con un estilo de juego muy riguroso, muy sólido en su línea defensiva animado por la calidad de Sarabia en la delantera. La retirada del representante albanés por motivos políticos facilitó el pase a octavos al Hamburgo, vigente campeón, si bien todo el mundo daba por descontado que el equipo alemán hubiese salvado la eliminatoria sin problemas. Primera ronda: KKS Lech Pozna? (Polonia) Todo un desconocido en Europa era un rival muy asequible para el Athletic. El fútbol polaco tenía una gran selección, sin embargo, los mejores jugadores o jugaban en el extranjero o estaban muy repartidos entre los principales clubs del país. Ello revertía en un campeonato muy abierto donde podía ganar cualquier equipo. Previamente había disputado el Trofeo Ibérico a doble partido contra el Benfica donde el campeón de Liga de Portugal remontó el 2-1 de la ida con un 3-1 en Lisboa. Con las ideas muy claras Javier Clemente no escondía sus cartas: el Athletic jugaría a la defensiva, buscando un resultado remontable para la vuelta. 14 de septiembre de 1983 Poznán, Bulgarska, 30000 espectadores. La presencia de tres puntas en la alineación del Athletic pudo dar la impresión de un cambio de planes en la cabeza de Clemente. No fue así, los españoles saltaron con la única idea de desgastar al rival y tratar de sorprenderle al contragolpe. En cambio, estuvo mucho más acertado el campeón polaco. Aprovechó la iniciativa concedida por el Athletic y, aunque tardó, llegaron los goles poco antes del descanso. No fue un dominio agobiante, pero al menos persistente. Luego, con 2-0 no buscaron el tercer gol de manera abierta, tomando claras precauciones para evitar que los visitantes no marcaran. Estaba claro que preferían ese 2-0 a un hipotético 3-1. Tampoco el equipo de Clemente pisó área rival con firmeza, lo que llevó a un resultado bastante incómodo para la vuelta. Opinión de los protagonistas: Wojciech Lazarek: “Es un buen resultado, pero debimos obtener uno concluyente. El Athletic se ha visto desbordado por nuestro juego”. Javier Clemente: “Este dos-cero se puede remontar, pero habrá que sudarlo. La verdad es que ellos han sido mejores”. El tiempo ha hecho que se recuerde más al defensa internacional español por su violencia, que en efecto la mostró en contadas ocasiones, que por su gran calidad como jugador. 5 / 23 Cuadernos de Fútbol Revista de CIHEFE https://www.cihefe.es/cuadernosdefutbol Con toda la opinión pública en su contra, como a Javier Clemente parecía gustarle, no tuvo ningún problema en anunciar la alineación de Goicoechea porque “el jugador se encontraba anímicamente en condiciones para hacerlo”. En las horas previas al encuentro ante el Lech, el Comité de Competición de la RFEF hizo pública la sanción de 18 partidos al defensa “por agresión a un contrario originaria de lesión grave”. 28 de septiembre de 1984 Bilbao, San Mamés, 45000 espectadores. Javier Clemente supo mantener a su equipo fuera del ambiente negativo contra Goicoechea. Jugó el defensa y lo hizo perfectamente. Es más, inauguró el marcador a los 10 al rematar de cabeza una prolongación de un córner. El público no dudó en premiarle y apoyar al juego de su equipo que había salido muy decidido a remontar. Quiso el Lech hacer valer su ventaja y su apuesta por jugar descaradamente a la defensiva le salió mal. Anulado su único hombre en punta, los polacos no fueron capaces de frenar el juego local, muy bien armado por las bandas. Pasada la media hora marcó penalti un derribo a Noriega. La puntilla llegó al poco de la reanudación cuando Noriega aprovechó la tercera oportunidad consecutiva en esos cinco minutos jugados. Volvió a marcar Goicoechea poco después, aunque el árbitro anuló el gol. Finalmente, en plena fiesta rojiblanca Urquiaga redondeó el resultado de un partido que solo tuvo un equipo sobre el campo. 6 / 23 Cuadernos de Fútbol Revista de CIHEFE https://www.cihefe.es/cuadernosdefutbol Opinión de los protagonistas: Javier Clemente: “Dedicamos esta victoria a Goicoechea. Siento mucho esta sanción y la considero injusta”. Wojciech Lazarek: “No esperábamos que el Athletic jugase así. Nos ha sorprendido”. Epílogo: Al día siguiente Goicoechea fue convocado por el seleccionador nacional Miguel Muñoz para el partido que España iba a disputar contra Francia en París. Posteriormente el Comité de Apelación redujo la sanción a diez partidos y un

Roma Hall of Fame is an institution set up by the Club to preserve and enhance its football heritage and the memory of an elite group of retired players employed by this Club from 1927 on. Inductions into the Hall of Fame are governed by procedures, criteria and guidelines set out and made public by A.S. Roma. Starting from 2012, the year the Hall of Fame was established, the Club will organize the balloting and election of a number of hall-of-famers each year. Therefore, the A.S.
