WHEREAS, August 26th is the date that the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution secured a woman's right to vote in 1920; and WHEREAS, It is necessary to rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of full equality for women and girls in our society so that we maintain hard-fought freedoms and continue to advance women's rights; and, WHEREAS,The struggle for women's rights began in 1848 in the small town of Seneca Falls, New York when and organized the first convention to discuss women's rights which created a "Declaration of Sentiments" outlining how few rights women had in society; and, WHEREAS,The Seneca Falls Declaration of Sentiments proclaimed that women were denied property, divorce, child custody, and voting rights; had no access to university education; and had no legal recourse when beaten by their husbands; and, WHEREAS, Since that time, our nation has enacted women's suffrage passed in 1920, the barring of employment discrimination in the , and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 guaranteeing equal opportunity in education and sports, as well as adoption ofthe Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009; and, WHEREAS,In 1971, the Congress designated August 26 as Women's Equality Day to commemorate the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution and as a reminder of women's continuing efforts to achieve full equality; and WHEREAS, Women's Equality Day gives us the opportunity to reflect on the efforts and sacrifices of hundreds of thousands of women who organized, marched, lectured, lobbied, became candidates for political office, became influential in every level of government, argued court cases, and broke new ground in every possible field; and, WHEREAS, Women's Equality Day represents the fulfillment of the dream that noted in letters to her husband, John Adams, one of the Founding Fathers, when she lamented, "... and what about the ladies, Mr. Adams? Do they not deserve the right to participate in government decisions that affect their lives as well?" NOW,THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED,that by adoption of this resolution, the members of the Los Angeles City Council hereby declare August 26, 2014 to be Women's Equality Day Los Angeles.
