As Carly Fiornia, former CEO of Hewlett Packard said yesterday on ABC News This Week with George Stephanopoulous and relative to the Glass Ceiling and the United States government….”we have come a long way but we still have a ways to go!”
Look at this little tidbit of information I found on the internet: Twenty-four women in congressional history have been elected by their peers into the Democratic and Republican Party leadership—18 in Lorie Marcum the House and six in the Senate. The first was Connecticut Representative Chase Going Woodhouse, BPW River City President, who served a single term as Secretary of the Democratic Caucus in the 81st Congress (1949–1951). Illinois Representative Lynn Martin became the first Republican woman elected to a House leadership 2008-2009 position when she won the vice chair post in the Republican Conference in the 99th–100th Congresses (1985–1989). The first woman elected to a Senate leadership position was Margaret Chase Smith of Maine, who chaired the Senate Republican Conference in the 90th—92nd Congresses (1967–1973). California Representative Nancy Pelosi is the highest-ranking woman in congressional history—having served as House Democratic Whip and House Democratic Leader, prior to being elected Speaker of the House in 2007.

BPW Legislative Awareness Lobbying in Frankfort February 10, 2009
Join us as we travel to Frankfort Kentucky on Wednesday, February 10, 2009. This is your opportunity to learn more about the po- litical process by attending a committee session, meeting with legislators, seeing debates on the House or Senate floor and possibly watching a vote in progress. It’s time to show legislators that women are watching their activities and that we are concerned about their decisions affecting women’s issues. Please invite a friend to attend!
Here are our current plans – For those traveling from Louisville, we will meet at Sam’s Wholesale parking lot, off I-64 at the Blankenbaker exit, no later than 8:00 AM Tuesday, February 10. We’ll then car pool to Frankfort to arrive no later than 9:30 am. Violet Clark will be directing us in the car pool. We’ll be parking in the Capitol Garage and we’ll enter at the Annex Door near the Rose Garden.
The agenda is as follows: • From 9:30 am – 10:30 am Room 338 we will meet with a Lobbyist to explain how the legislative process works and how a Bill is passed. • At 11:00 am we will have legislators from throughout the state to meet with our BPW groups so please encourage your members to attend this meeting. • At 12:00 noon, we’ll see if we can attend a committee meeting depending on what is scheduled. More info to come as the date gets closer. • Lunch break. • The Senate and House convene at 2:00 pm. We’ll split up with some of us attending the Senate session and some going to the House session.
Some things to know… Gallery passes are REQUIRED to attend. Therefore, you MUST RSVP to [email protected] by Friday, February 6 so we’ll have enough time to have passes for everyone who wants to attend. You do not have to be present for the entire day. Some of you may want to come late or leave early. That is perfectly OK; just keep in mind that you may need to drive separately to meet your schedule.

2008-2009 Leadership BPW Program
Leadership BPW consists of meetings with community leaders who will share their knowledge about vari- ous community initiatives, community resources, places of interest and corporations. The goal is to be- come more educated about our city’s resources, while developing attributes to become future business/ community leaders. We are able to ask all the questions we want of these community leaders who have specifically opened their doors to accommodate our leadership program.
