Getting to Mie Mie Prefecture is home to the Ise Shrine (Ise Jingu), Japan's most sacred Shinto shrine. Mie is also famous for its seafood, including Ise spiny lobster and oyster, and for its high-class marbled wagyu beef called Matsuzaka Beef. The prefecture hosted the 42nd G7 summit on May 26-27, 2016 in Ise-Shima, the city blessed with magniﬁcent history and culture, as well as the quality food from the sea and the mountains. G7 Leaders Summit 2020: Background Paper on Themes of G7 Leaders Summits (2012-2019) G7 Commitments at a Glance Gender equality and women’s empowerment are at the heart of the universal 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically in relation to women’s economic empowerment (WEE). This WEE agenda has evolved through further engagement with governments and other key stakeholders, such as during the 2017 United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, the Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on Women’s Economic Empowerment, the Group of 20 (G20) and the Group of 7 (G7). The G7 has articulated its WEE position in the G7 Common Principles on Women’s Entrepreneurship (2015 Elmau); G7 Guiding Principles for Building the Capacity of Women and Girls (Ise-Shima 2016); the G7 Roadmap for a Gender-Responsive Economic Environment (Taormina 2017); the Charlevoix G7 Summit Communique (Charlevoix 2018) and Paris Declaration on Gender Equality (Biarritz 2019). The G7 recognizes that women are key drivers of innovation, growth and jobs, and that the private sector plays a vital role in creating an environment in which women can more meaningfully participate in the economy. The group has set concrete targets, such as reducing the gender gap in labour force participation rates by 25% by 2025, and to increase spending on Technical Education and Vocational Training (TVET) by a third by 2030. The majority of low- and middle- income countries are now suffering from a double burden of diseases. Global Health Professionals Call for Transition Away from Coal On behalf of health professionals around the world, we call on the G7 nations to accelerate the global transition away from coalfired electricity. Eliminating air pollution from coalfired power plants provides immediate and significant air pollutionrelated health benefits and health care savings. A coal phaseout also slows climate change, thereby reducing current and future illnesses and deaths from heat waves, droughts, malnutrition, flooding, air pollution and wildfires. Who Are We? We are 82 organizations from 30 countries who represent more than 300,000 doctors, nurses and public health professionals, as well as public health advocates who support them. Our work involves caring for the sick and the dying, preventing chronic diseases, injuries and illnesses, and promoting the health and wellbeing of all citizens. A list of the supporting organizations is provided at the bottom of this statement. Coal and Health Coalfired power stations are a significant source of air pollution. They release large volumes of healthdamaging substances including sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and fine particulate matter that can travel long distances. Exposure to these pollutants significantly increases the risks of developing cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, leading to hospital admissions and premature deaths. On a global scale, outdoor air pollution is responsible for approximately 3.7 million premature deaths per year from heart disease, strokes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer and acute lower respiratory infections among children (WHO, 2014). Coal plants are responsible for a significant share of these health impacts. For example, pollution from coal power in the United States contributes to approximately 13,200 premature deaths per year, as well as 9,700 additional hospitalizations and 20,000 heart attacks (CATF, 2010).
