Guide to the Coastal Marine Fishes of California

LEA Marine Resources Region 1972 ABSTRACT This is a comprehensive identification guide encompassing all shallow marine fishes within California waters. Geographic range limits, maximum size, depth range, a brief color description, and some meristic counts including, if available: fin ray counts, lateral line pores, lateral line scales, gill rakers, and vertebrae are given. Body proportions and shapes are used in the keys and a state- ment concerning the rarity or commonness in California is given for each species. In all, 554 species are described. Three of these have not been re- corded or confirmed as occurring in California waters but are included since they are apt to appear. The remainder have been recorded as occurring in an area between the Mexican and Oregon borders and offshore to at least 50 miles. Five of California species as yet have not been named or described, and ichthyologists studying these new forms have given information on identification to enable inclusion here. A dichotomous key to 144 families includes an outline figure of a repre- sentative for all but two families. Keys are presented for all larger families, and diagnostic features are pointed out on most of the figures. Illustrations are presented for all but eight species. Of the 554 species, 439 are found primarily in depths less than 400 ft., 48 are meso- or bathypelagic species, and 67 are deepwater bottom dwelling forms rarely taken in less than 400 ft. -

Reid, and Noele Weemes Auke Bay Laboratory Alaska Fisheries Science Center National Marine Fisheries Service National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration 11305 Glacier Highway Juneau, Alaska 99801-8626 February 2006 iii ABSTRACT In 1967 and 1968, scientists from the National Marine Fisheries Service’s Auke Bay Laboratory carried out four surveys of marine fauna in Katlian Bay, near Sitka, Alaska as part of an impact study associated with plans to build a wood pulp processing plant in the bay. Here we report the results of our surveys and also provide a broad literature review on several of the species that were captured in the bay. Fifty-nine fish species and more than 44 invertebrate species (32 identified to species level (see page 8) were captured. Habitats examined were intertidal, the steep sides of the bay, and the bay’s deep central basin. Many species occupied a single habitat type but others overlapped into adjacent habitats. Five fish species were collected in the intertidal zone and major invertebrate fauna included the sunflower star (Pycnopodia helianthoides) and numerous members of Gastropoda. Thirty-nine fish and 23 invertebrate species were collected on the bay’s sides below 5 m. -

The sexes were dimorphic, particularly during the breeding season, and males competed with other males for access to females. Males performed lateral and spasm displays. In the wild, the breeding season extended from January to March on cobblestone beaches. Assortative mating was positive with respect to body size. Females exhibited solitary parental care of the eggs. Each female coiled around, guarded and fanned a single egg mass that likely represented her total reproductive effort for the year. The number of eggs in the mass increased linearly with female size (weight or length). Males did not remain after spawning. Aquarium observations revealed that males spawn with more than one female given the opportunity. It is not known whether this occurs in the wild. Incubation to hatching took 29 days. I den oprindelige beskrivelse er artsnavnet stavet henholdsvis lumpretaeformis, lampretiformis og lampretaeformis. Ved senere revisioner er man blevet enige om, at stavemåden lampretaeformis er den korrekte. Siden beskrivelsestidspunktet er arten flyttet til slægten Lumpenus Reinhardt, 1836 og buskhovedfamilien Stichaeidae Gill, 1864. Slægten Lumpenus består af tre arter. Foruden spidshalet langebarn drejer det sig om Fabricius’ langebarn (Lumpenus fabricii), der findes i store dele af det arktiske område samt arten Lumpenus sagitta fra det nordlige Stillehav. Slægten hører til langebarnunderfamilien Lumpeninae, der omfatter 8 slægter med i alt 11 arter (Eschmeyer & Fong 2019) (ses ofte med familiestatus – se Clardy (2014) for en detaljeret gennemgang). Arterne i langebarnunderfamilien kan bl.a. skelnes fra andre medlemmer af buskhovedfamilien på den lange, slanke kropsform og de længere tarme (Matarese et al. 2014). Bestanden af spidshalet langebarn i den vestlige del af Atlanten, blev oprindelig blev beskrevet under navnet Blennius serpentinus Storer, 1855, og den regnes stadig af nogle forfattere som en særskilt underart, Lumpenus lampretaeformis serpentinus (Eschmeyer et al. 2019). Description Abstract: This data set contains 9,327 records: the results of an evaluation of Arctic marine fish specimens in museums in order to establish a database of reliable records of occurrence. One use of the database is to assist in the determination of historical and current distributions of species. Misidentifications of specimens in historical collections are common, and prevent accurate determination of species distributions. During several visits to museums holding collections of western Arctic fishes, we examined specimens with questionable identifications, such as specimens collected from localities outside the species’ published geographic ranges. We also examined a more or less random sample of specimens of each species from each cruise or other collection activity. Identifications were changed to correct misidentifications and to bring the taxonomic nomenclature up to date (such as changing an old name or junior synonym to the current name or senior synonym). For some collections we also proofed locality data given in museum records against cruise records and published station data; and added data which are not included in the museums’ catalogs or posted online. As well as the specimens from historical cruises, archived specimens from recent cruises (2004-2008) to the Chukchi and Beaufort seas are included in the database. -
