    To What Extent Does Chimera Ant Teach Us About Humanity? A Thematic Look at Hunter x Hunter’s Chimera Ant Arc MrDrWombat Extended Essay: Film May 2015 MrDrWombat 2 Abstract Hunter x Hunter (2011) is a Japanese animated television series produced by Madhouse production studio. It is an adaptation of a manga of the same name. Chimera Ant is a story arc within the show that deals with post-humanism and the complex nature of humanity. My research question for the extended essay was, “To what extent does Chimera Ant teach us about humanity?” To investigate my research question, I watched and analyzed the Chimera Ant story arc, paying close attention to the character development and thematic reasoning behind character actions. I used knowledge of film language and context behind the medium of animation in order to create a mirrored character analysis of the protagonist and antagonist of Chimera Ant. Analyzing these two characters, along with the context of the medium of Anime, allowed me to construct a look at human nature through the symmetrical story arcs of these two main characters. After having done this, I concluded that Chimera Ant explores the human condition to a great extent, and uses the focus of these two characters as proof. The protagonist, Gon, shows the potential for evil in the best of us, and how good intentions can lead to bad actions. The antagonist, Meruem, shows the other side of humanity and identity. His arc teaches us the complexity of worth and strength within humans, and shows that good can come from even the most evil.

Adapun tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk membuktikan bahwa ijime dalam manga Naruto merupakan sebuah refleksi kondisi ijime nyata serta untuk menganalisis dampak yang diakibatkan oleh tindakan ijime terhadap tokoh Gaara. Penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan pendekatan sosiologi sastra dengan melakukan studi pustaka. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif analisis. Sedangkan, untuk menjawab permasalahan penelitian, penulis menggunakan teori Ian Watt mengenai sastra sebagai cerminan kondisi sosial budaya masyarakat dan teori sosial milik Hagan yang menyatakan bahwa fungsi masyarakat sebagai pembentuk sifat _baik_ atau _jahat_ dalam diri individu. Dari penelitian yang telah dilakukan, penulis menarik kesimpulan sebagai berikut: (1) Manga Naruto dapat merefleksikan kondisi ijime di dunia nyata dengan baik. Hal ini dapat dibuktikan dari adanya kesamaan penyebab, pelaku, bentuk tindakan, dan dampak yang ditimbulkan dari ijime yang digambarkan dalam Naruto dengan kondisi ijime nyata. (2) Dampak yang ditimbulkan oleh ijime pada tokoh Gaara adalah terjadinya perubahan pada watak tokoh tersebut. Selain itu, perubahan watak tersebut juga turut mempengaruhi penilaian Gaara mengenai keluarga, hubungan cinta kasih, serta makna keberadaan dirinya di masyarakat. <hr> <b>Abstract</b><br> The main focuses of this study are to analyze whether the ijime described in Naruto manga is a reflection of the ijime in the real world, and also to analyze the impact of ijime for the character Gaara in the manga.

The convention expects to welcome over two thousand fans of Japanese animation (anime), comics (manga), gaming, and science fiction to downtown Lancaster for the weekend-long event. Zenkaikon had typically been held in the Valley Forge area of Pennsylvania. However, with the conversion of the Valley Forge Convention Center to a casino and the continued growth of the event, Zenkaikon moved its convention to Lancaster. Many convention attendees don costumes of their favorite characters to attend the annual convention. Planned convention events include a variety of educational panels and workshops hosted by volunteers and guests; anime and live action screenings; a costume and skit competition (the "Masquerade"); a hall costume contest; performances by musical guests; a live action role play ("LARP") event; video game tournaments and tabletop gaming; a formal ball and informal dances; and an exhibit hall of anime-themed merchandise and handmade creations from artists. Born University of Missouri, St. Louis Since their introduction to Japan in the Sixth Century, the teachings of Confucius have played an important role in the creation and sustenance of societal values and order. While Japanese society has changed much since the dawn of the postwar era, these same basic principles are still highly influential, but are seen in some surprising forms. Geared primarily at pre-teen and teen-age boys, recent shônen anime, especially Naruto and Bleach, evince Confucian values while encouraging the viewer to identify with and embrace them. While some critics of contemporary culture are quick to point out some of the societal breakdowns and subcultural variances common to the Otaku phenomenon, Confucianism is still alive and well, albeit in reinterpreted forms. Using shônen anime in the classroom to examine traditional values creates a useful device for understanding Japanese popular culture and its connection to larger anthropological and historical themes. Traditional Confucian Influences That Confucius has historically had a great influence on Japanese society is no secret. In conjunction with Buddhism, the teachings of Confucius made their way to Japan from China via emissaries from Korea in 552, when the kingdom of Paekche was seeking allies in their struggles for power with the competing kingdoms of Koguryo and Silla. This ushered in a new era of learning as the Japanese elites began to adopt a new written language, mainland Asian philosophy, moral values, and religion. Kabuki has been performed as a Japanese traditional art in the U.S. for about 60 years, and the United States has seen more kabuki than any other country outside of Japan. Those tours were closely tied to national cultural policy of both Japan and the USA in the early years (Thornbury 2–3).
