You look so handsome in the moonlight!’ Hampstead Theatre presents Michael Frayn’s Wild Honey, directed by Hampstead’s Associate Artist Howard Davies. Geoffrey Streatfeild will make his Hampstead Theatre debut in the role of Platonov. The cast also includes Bruce Alexander, Joe Bannister, Gunnar Cauthery, Simon Chandler, Kammy Darweish, Joe Evans, Matthew Flynn, Jo Herbert, Rebecca Humphries, Justine Mitchell, Adrian Richards and Sophie Rundle. This comedy of errors, drawn from Chekhov’s untitled – and posthumously discovered - early play, is a tale of nineteenth century Russian life replete with classic misunderstandings, irrepressible desires and nostalgia for a vanishing world. Village schoolmaster Platonov has it all: wit, intelligence, a comfortable and respectable life in provincial Russia, and the attentions of four beautiful women - one of whom is his devoted wife… As summer arrives and the seasonal festivities commence, the rapidly intensifying heat makes everyone giddy with sunlight, vodka – and passion. Michael Frayn has written sixteen plays, including Copenhagen, Afterlife, Benefactors, Donkeys’ Years, and Democracy. He has also translated for the theatre, mostly Chekhov and other plays as well as Wild Honey from the Russian. He has written a number of screenplays, including Clockwise, starring John Cleese. His eleven novels include The Tin Men, Towards the End of the Morning, Headlong, Spies, and Skios. He has also published various collections of articles, including Collected Columns, Stage Directions, and Travels with a Typewriter; two works of philosophy, Constructions and The Human Touch; and a memoir, My Father’s Fortune. His most recent book, Matchbox Theatre, a collection of thirty short entertainments, was produced on the stage by Hampstead Theatre in May 2015. Roundabout Theatre Company presented a revival of Noises Off on Broadway this year at the American Airlines Theatre. Howard Davies, Hampstead Theatre’s Associate Artist, returns to Hampstead Theatre following the acclaimed Hapgood by Tom Stoppard, Drawing the Line and 55 Days by Howard Brenton.     Stoically Sapphic: Gentlemanly Encryption and Disruptive Legibility in Adapting Anne Lister Sarah E. Maier and Rachel M. Friars (University of New Brunswick, Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada & Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada) Abstract: Anne Lister (1791–1840) was a multihyphenate landowner-gentry-traveller-autodidact- queer-lesbian, a compulsive journal writer who lived through the late-Romantic and well into the Victorian ages. While her journals have proven to be an iconographic artefact for queer and lesbian history, our interest here is in the public adaptations of Lister’s intentionally private writings for twenty-first-century audiences as found in the film The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister (2010) and the television series Gentleman Jack (2019–). Our discussion queries what it means to portray lived queer experience of the nineteenth century, how multimedia translate and transcribe Lister’s works onto screen, as well as how questions of legibility, visibility and ethics inevitably emerge in these processes. (Whitbread 1992: xii) The recent appearance of a woman given the nickname ‘Gentleman Jack’ in a show focused on a queer woman depicts a subject who writes her life into encrypted journals.

If you cannot access the Australian plays through your local library, bookshop or bookshops on our suggested list, published editions of the Australian plays are generally available through Currency Press. AUDITION PROCESS You will be required to choose one monologue from the list provided to perform. Please note the delivery time of a monologue may vary depending on your interpretation of the chosen piece. Usual estimated time is between three to eight minutes. So please make sure your monologue is within this time frame. You may be asked to deliver your chosen piece more than once. You will also be tested for improvisation skills. So be prepared to use your imagination and creativity. A script may be handed to you during the audition.

News of defeat at Orleans reaches the Duke of Gloucester, the Lord Protector, and other nobles in England. Henry VI, still an infant, is proclaimed King. Seventeen years later the rivalries at Court have intensified; Gloucester and the Bishop of Winchester argue openly in front of the King. Rouen falls to the French but Plantagenet, recently restored as the Duke of York, Exeter and Talbot pledge to recapture the city from the Dauphin. Battle commences and the French, led by Joan of Arc, defeat the English. Valiant Talbot and his son John are killed. Warwick and Somerset arrive after the battle to join forces with the survivors and retake Rouen. Somerset woos Margaret of Anjou as a potential bride for Henry VI. Plantagenet takes Joan of Arc prisoner and she is burnt at the stake. Gloucester protests but still Margaret is introduced as Henry's queen.

I am delighted to say that our events programme for 2008-09 is shaping up very well, with confirmed speakers including Heather Forsyth from the Museum of London, who will talk about the treasure found in Stuart London that is known as the ‘Cheapside Hoard’, and Peter Burke, who will discuss the rhetoric of autobiography in seventeenth-century Europe. We will finish this year’s programme of academic events with our second student conference, ‘Journeys and Encounters’, on Saturday 12 July. The range of papers is very exciting and reflects the society’s multi-disciplinary ethos: people will be speaking about topics that include the New World, plant finding journeys of English herbalists in the 1640s, pamphlet wars, and Sir Kenelm Digby’s privateering career. I would like to thank everyone who submitted a synopsis – all of them demonstrated a high level of interest in the period and theme. On the day we will be able to provide lunch for all delegates and speakers, thanks to the generosity of Julian Swann and the School of History, Classics and Archaeology, which is much appreciated.
