    REFRONTOLO PASSITO Single vineyard Grapes: Marzemino The Refrontolo Passito was the favourite of Mozart, that called it "Excellent Marzemino", in his opera "Don Giovanni". In Refrontolo, a UNESCO Wold Heritage site, the production of the Marzemino Passito has a tradition that dates back to 1400. Perfect with chocolate and as a meditation wine. TECHNICAL SHEET NAME OF THE WINE: Refrontolo Passito Colli di Conegliano DOCG. GRAPES: 100 % Marzemino. HISTORICAL NOTES: in Refrontolo the production of this wine has a tradition that dates back to 1400. This wine was drunk by mothers after the birth of their sons, because of its recovering features. The Marzemino Passito from Refrontolo impressed also Mozart, who even mentioned it in his opera Don Giovanni in this way: "that excellent Marzemino". In fact he received this wine from Mr. Da Ponte from Vittorio Veneto (a town near Refrontolo), who was Mozart's copyist. PRODUCTION AREA: Colvendrame estate, which is on the hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, a UNESCO Wold Heritage site. Colvendrame is the name of the hill where this vineyard is; the exposition to the sun and the climate are excellent for grape vine growing. ALTITUDE: 200-350 m. SOIL: with a good balance of all the components. It is rich in tufa which characterises the wine. CLIMATE: mild and windy, with wide changes of temperature between day and night, ideal for the preservation of the aroma and the acidity of the grapes. DENSITY OF THE PLANTATION AND TRAINING SYSTEM: 3.500-5.500 vines per hectare trained with spurred cordon. YEAR OF THE PLANTATION: 1987.

    Introduction: World War I It’s been almost a century since the First World War star- ted, but its memory still resides in most people’s conscien- ce like very few other past events. The 1914-1918’s war was extraordinarily ferocious. It pro- duced and spread all over the world the horrors and an- xieties of the 20th century, involving millions of soldiers as well as citizens, leaving a terrible trail of death behind, using new and more devastating weapons, destroying the territory and creating enormous artistic emergencies. Be- sides the injustices, the frustrations, the seeds for new wars that the first conflict left as inheritance to Europe, it also gave birth to a grief-centered, bellicose, barbaric and full of hate culture. The Italian front of this huge conflict is usually remembered abroad thanks to the battle, and the resul- ting defeat, of Caporetto. History books narrate about the military strategies, statistics list the slain, the disabled and the widows. To Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto though, as well as to Austria and Slovenia, the memory is even more intense and upsetting. The war walked over these territories, it shred people and feelings and drained all natural resources. These are the territories where most of those terrifying battles took place. These are the territories where so many young people, coming both from the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, found death. Here, from May 1915 to October 1918, for twenty-nine endless months, the two armies fought harshly. The Julian and Carnic Alps, but above all the Karst, witnessed to twelve bloodthirsty battles.

    PROVINCE OF TREVISO MONTELLO CYCLING LOOP AND CONNECTING LINK ROADS THE MOST BIKE-FRIENDLYLA PROVINCIA PROVINCE PIU’ IN CICLISTICAITALY D’ITALIA In a polycentric area such as the province of Treviso, the bike represented the only means of connection and transport for many generations. Over the years, economic, social and technological evolutions led to the prevalence of motorised transport, but the bicycle still remains fi rmly in the hearts of the trevigiani (Treviso local inhabitants) and has changed from being a necessity to an authentic passion. So it should be no surprise that the province of Treviso has been the birthplace to one of the major names of cycling: Ottavio Bottecchia. Born in San Martino di Colle Umberto on 1 August 1894, he was the fi rst Italian in history to win the Tour de France. He became an overnight legend, partly thanks to his mysterious death during training in June 1927. What we have left of his victories are contemporary reports and the fascinating, faded black and white photos. The climate and composition of the land and consequently the characteristics of the routes make the province of Treviso, particularly in the region of Pedemontana and Montello, an ideal place for cycling.     THE FINAL BATTLE On the 24th of October 1918, exactly a year after the defeat at Caporetto, the general Italian offensive began against the Austro- Hungarian army, and was to go on until the 31st of October, becoming known as the Battle of Vittorio Veneto. The Italian troops were engaged in a fierce attack along the entire length of the front, especially on the Grappa. The soldiers belonging to the Grappa Army, serving under Marshall Giuseppe Giardino, met the Austro-Hungarians in what were to be the last, decisive battles. A strategic move drew the enemy troops’ reserves onto the massif to clear the way for the Italian advance on the plains. Nonetheless, endless soldiers made the ultimate, painful sacrifice. It wasn’t until the evening of the 30th of October 1918 that the artillery fire over the Grappa finally fell silent. On the 27th and 28th of October, several Italian and French units, after the encounters on the Tomba and the Monfenera, moved back up the Piave valley from Pederobba, liberating the Alano basin. The Italian troops marched forward on the right and left banks of the River Piave simultaneously. The evening of the 28th of October, they entered Valdobbiadene, thence liberating various villages until, on the 31st of October 1918, the Battle of Vittorio Veneto ended in victory. The victory, which put an end to the war, cost Italy no less than 500,000 lives, with a further 100,000 prisoners never making it back from the prison camps. Some mountain stretches of the route cannot be travelled by coach, and access may not be granted during winter.
