THE THORNY ROSE: THE AVOIDANCE OF PASSION IN MODERN INDONESIAN LITERATURE1 Harry Aveling One of the important shortcomings of modern Indonesian literature is the failure of its authors, on the whole young, well-educated men of the upper and more modernized strata of society, to deal in a convincing manner with the topic of adult heterosexual passion. This problem includes, and partly arises from, an inadequacy in portraying realistic female char acters which verges, at times, on something which might be considered sadism. What is involved here is not merely an inability to come to terms with Western concepts of romantic love, as explicated, for example, by the late C. S. Lewis in his book The Allegory of Love. The failure to depict adult heterosexual passion on the part of modern Indonesian authors also stands in strange contrast to the frankness and gusto with which the writers of the various branches of traditional Indonesian and Malay litera ture dealt with this topic. Indeed it stands in almost as great a contrast with the practice of Peninsular Malay literature today. In Javanese literature, as Pigeaud notes in his history, The Literature of Java, "Poems and tales describing erotic situations are very much in evidence . descriptions of this kind are to be found in almost every important mythic, epic, historical and romantic Javanese text."^ In Sundanese literature, there is not only the open violence of Sang Kuriang's incestuous desires towards his mother (who conceived him through inter course with a dog), and a further wide range of openly sexual, indeed often heavily Oedipal stories, but also the crude direct ness of the trickster Si-Kabajan tales, which so embarrassed one commentator, Dr.

M arriageable Ag e : Political Debates on Early Marriage in Twentieth- C entury Indonesia Susan Blackburn and Sharon Bessell The purpose of this article is to show how the age of marriage, especially for girls, became a political issue in twentieth century Indonesia, and to investigate the changing intensity, focus, and participation in the debate over the issue. Compared with India, the incidence of very early marriage among Indonesian girls appears never to have been exceptionally high, yet among those trying to "modernize" Indonesia the fact that parents married off their daughters at or before the onset of puberty was considered a "social evil." Social reformers differed as to the reasons for their concern and as to what action should be taken and by whom. In particular there were strong disagreements about whether government intervention was either desirable or effective in raising the age of marriage. The age at which it is appropriate for girls to marry has been a contentious matter in many countries in recent centuries. In societies where marriage was considered to be the prerogative of families, the children themselves were rarely consulted and the age of marriage, or at least of betrothal, was likely to be quite young, before children could exert their own will. Although physical readiness for sexual intercourse and child bearing was a consideration, this was a matter to be supervised by adult kin, and the wedding could, if necessary, be timed so that it occurred separately from the consummation of marriage. Apart from families, the only other institutions directly concerned with marriage were likely to be religious ones.

Feminist Voice in the Works of Indonesian Early Woman Writers: Reading Novels and Short Stories by Suwarsih Djojopuspito1 By Aquarini Priyatna2 Abstract Suwarsih Djojopuspito is among the most important early Indonesian women/feminist writers. This research intends to emphasize her rightful position among the first Indonesian feminist writers. Focusing on her very important novel Manusia Bebas (published originally in Dutch as Buiten het Gareel in 1940)3, one collection of short stories, Empat Serangkai (1954), and a novel written in Sundanese, Marjanah (1959), I argue that feminist spirits and ideas actually have existed and been elaborated in works by women writers in the era prior to the Indonesian New Order (1966-1998) as exemplified by Suwarsih’s works.

  • Biography, History and the Indonesian Novel Reading Salah Asuhan
keith foulcher Biography, history and the Indonesian novel Reading Salah Asuhan The novel Salah Asuhan (Wrong Upbringing), written by the Indonesian nationalist politician and journalist Abdoel Moeis, has long held an hon- oured place in the modern Indonesian literary canon.1 It was originally pub- lished in 1928 by Balai Poestaka, the Netherlands Indies government printing house, and by 1995 it had been reprinted twenty-three times. In summary form, it has been studied by generations of Indonesian schoolchildren, and in 1972 it was adapted by Asrul Sani as a successful feature film. Critics and historians of modern Indonesian literature have always regarded Salah Asuhan as a literary milestone. It is admired for the maturity of its author’s literary imagination, as well as the modernity of its language and style. In linguistic terms, it is seen as one of the pioneering literary expressions of the language which was designated as Bahasa Indonesia in the very year of the novel’s publication. It exercises an additional fascination for literary critics and historians because of the circumstances of its publication. The form in which it was originally written is now unknown, for the novel was only pub- lished after a lengthy delay and a series of revisions which the author made to the text after seeing his manuscript languish for more than a year under the scrutiny of Balai Poestaka’s editors. As a result, the original conception of Salah Asuhan remains a mystery. Indeed, it is one of the greatest puzzles in a literary history that is so full of documentary lacunae that its serious study remains a source of ongoing challenge and frustration.2 1 I wish to thank Karen Entwistle and Doris Jedamski for giving me access to some of the reference material used in this article.

Contesting Sartorial Hierarchies From Ethnic Stereotypes to National Dress , Raden Moehamad Enoch, a junior engineer at the Department of Public Works, patiently waited in line to purchase a I second-class train ticket at the Bandung railway station. Dressed in a Euro- pean suit, Enoch exemplied his generation of young Javanese who enjoyed a Western education, were uent in Dutch, and had roots in the lower aristoc- racy but worked in nontraditional professions. When it was his turn, Enoch approached the window and, in Dutch, kindly requested a train ticket to Madiun, his hometown. e European ticket o cer, clearly annoyed, replied to Enoch in Malay and told him to wait. When he then immediately accepted a European patron at his window, Enoch stepped up to another o cer at the counter for third-class tickets, only to be denied service once more. On Enoch’s inquiry as to why he was not served at either window, the ticket o cer yelled at him—this time in Dutch—and told him unmistakably to either shut up or su er the consequences. Enoch refused to back down, which provoked the ticket o cer into bellowing: “You are a native, and thus need to buy your ticket at the window for natives.” Instead, the proud Enoch demanded to speak to the sta- tion chief. When the chief arrived, he was forced to acknowledge Enoch’s right to purchase his ticket at any window he pleased—a right that was previously limited to Europeans. On the train to Madiun, Enoch described the episode in a letter to Advisor for Native A airs G.

Kiai Haji Ahmad Dahlan established Muhammadiyah in Kauman, Yogyakarta, in 1912, at a time when civil associations and political organizations were emerging nationwide in Indonesia. The Muhammadiyah has a predominantly urban, middle-class base through- out Indonesia. As Muhammad Fuad observes, it was Dahlan’s concern with the poverty and backwardness of the people of the Netherlands East Indies, the majority of whom belonged to the Islamic umma, which led him to the fields of education and health.2 He was interested in issues such as reform of Islamic law and the introduction of modern education. In addition, kiai Dahlan’s revolutionary social treatment of women should be highlighted. He considered women as independent human beings, responsible and accountable for their own deeds in the same fashion as men, and that they should be given access to and opportunity to acquire religious knowledge.3 Aisyiyah, the women’s branch of 1 Author’s note: I would like to thank Prof. Susanne Schro¨ ter and three anonymous reviewers for their thoughtful comments on an earlier version of this paper. • ASPECTS of INDONESIAN INTELLECTUAL LIFE in the 1930S
PUDJANGGA BARU: ASPECTS OF INDONESIAN INTELLECTUAL LIFE IN THE 1930s Heather Sutherland Pudjangga Baru, the "New Writer," was a cultural periodical put out in the colonial capital of Batavia by a group of young Indonesian intellectuals from 1933 until the invasion of the Netherlands Indies by Japan in 1942.1 In Bahasa Indonesia, the term pudjangga means "literary man, man of letters; author, poet; linguist, philologist."2 34 The choice of this term for the title of the monthly was no doubt also influenced by an awareness of its historical connotations, for the word can be traced back through such Old Javanese forms as bhujanga to an original Sanskrit root associated with sacred and priestly learning. It implied nobility and integrity as well as literary ability; and it is therefore no accident that the writings appearing in it claimed high idealism and a sense of mission. The purpose proclaimed by Pudjangga Baru became more fervent as the years passed. In the beginning, it described itself simply as a literary, artistic, and cultural monthly. At the start of its third year it declared itself a "bearer of a new spirit in literature, art, culture, and general social affairs."^ At the beginning of its fifth year it claimed to be the "leader of the new dynamic spirit to create a new culture, the culture of Indonesian unity."1* In 1928, when the second All-Indonesia Youth Congress swore the famous oath to work for "one fatherland, one people, and one language" Pudjangga Baru pledged itself to work for the development of the national language and also to strive for a national culture, adding "one culture" to its 1.

  • The Social Movement and Social Enterprise Development in the Emergence of Indonesia, 1895-1945
The Social Movement and Social Enterprise Development in the Emergence of Indonesia, 1895-1945 Sri Rahayu Hijrah Hati* 1 and Aida Idris University of Malaya Abstract The term social entrepreneurship is relatively new in academic research but the initiatives which fulfill the key characteristics of social enterprise were founded in Indonesia long before its independence. This paper describes the history of social entrepreneurship in the country during the period marking the end of the Dutch rule and beginning of its independence (1895-1945). Based on archival analysis it was found that policies imposed by the Dutch government in the early 20th century had significant influence on social enterprise growth in the colony. Findings of the study also suggest that most social movement organizations during the period used social entrepreneurship strategies to achieve its mission of empowering local communities and promoting the notion of independence. Thus the growth of social entrepreneurship in Indonesia appeared to be largely due to the nationalist movement. The study also found that social enterprises were mostly established in Java, the island which has dominated Indonesian social, political and economic landscape throughout history. Hence, Islam as the religion of the vast majority of Javanese, had also been very influential in shaping social entrepreneurship in the country. Keywords: social entrepreneurship, social movement, nationalism, religion, Indonesia 1 Corresponding Author. E-mail addresses: [email protected] .my or [email protected] 1 Introduction The term social entrepreneurship first gained recognition in Indonesia approximately 30 years ago when Ashoka Foundation launched its initial programs in 1983 (Ashoka, 2011).
