President’s Report

On behalf of the Board of the Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League, I am pleased to present the Annual Report for season 2013.

This year we had 2,500 players registered in 159 teams across all age groups ranging from Under 6’s to A Grade.

The season ended with twenty six Grand Finals across four venues including , Nolans 1, Nolans 2 and North Sydney Oval.

Looking at the season results, it was pleasing to see that every Club had several teams making the semi‐finals and all Clubs had at least one team playing in the Grand Finals which suggests that the football talent is evenly spread throughout the junior league.

I watched every Grand Final played at Brookvale Oval over two days and was continually impressed with the high standard of rugby league played across all age groups. But the highlight for me was seeing many of the younger kids playing in their first Grand Final. It is a shame we can’t get all of the Grand Finals onto Brookvale Oval but we only get one weekend which limits us to about fourteen games.

I would like to congratulate all teams that reached the Grand Finals but more importantly, all of our registered players who strapped on the boots and had a go ‐ win, lose or draw. The benefits of playing in a team sport are significant and you make friends for life whilst have fun along the way.

The task of running the junior league can be challenging but we only succeed because of the huge contribution made by our large band of volunteers who give up their own precious time to help promote football. These people set up the fields, run the canteen, cook the barbecue, clean up the grounds, coach, manage and supervise the various teams and I thank them for their assistance.

I would also like to thank the Referees for their contribution to junior rugby league which at times can be demanding as everyone seems to be an expert on the sideline. I am of the opinion that no one is entitled to comment on a Referee’s performance unless they have refereed a game themselves as it is more involved than it looks. I would like to encourage anyone who thinks they can do better to get your referees ticket and get involved.

It is also important to highlight the financial assistance provided by the Manly Warringah Leagues Club which has supported the junior league for many years. I have said many times that without the Leagues Club support, the junior league could not function in its current form and I thank the

Season 2013 Annual Report Page 7

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated

Leagues Club Board for their contribution and assistance including use of the meeting rooms in the Federal Parade car park. If you are not a current member, I would ask everyone involved in junior rugby league to join the Leagues Club and take advantage of its facilities to show our support for its contribution.

Thanks also to the members of the Manly Warringah Junior Rugby League Board and Executive who also give up their valuable time in running our various competitions. Many of these people volunteer at their own Club but also find time to help run the junior league including judiciary matters, Code of Conduct issues, registering and maintaining the date base, monitoring player movements and actually running the competitions which is greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to the Manly Sea Eagles for reaching the Grand Final in the NRL, as it is no secret that when Manly perform well on the field, the interest in junior rugby league increases. We still have many rising young “stars” who want to become a Manly Sea Eagle. The Sea Eagles support, including the executive and development squad officials, is greatly appreciated.

Thanks also to the District Club who provide assistance in judiciary appeal matters and general corporate guidance when required. It is a major benefit knowing that the Manly Warringah Junior Rugby League can call on the scholarship and support of the Manly Warringah District Club, the Manly Warringah Leagues Club and the Manly Sea Eagles if required.

I would like to thank everyone who contributed to running the game. At times the commitment to run junior rugby league can be challenging but let’s not forget that the main objective in playing football is to have fun.

Hope to see you next season.

Executive Report (Secretary)

It is with sadness that my opening remarks record sad news.

One of our best workers for the JRL passed away. He was a long standing member and was extremely dedicated. I refer to David Norton.

David was a first class gentleman, very dedicated to fostering the code of Junior Rugby League and also our Referees Association as a former secretary.

He was a Life Member of The Manly Warringah/Pittwater Sporting Union and was also dedicated to developing young JRL players to train and become qualified referees.

He will be sadly missed.

Now, our JRL season this year, to say the least, was difficult, namely in respect to the A Grade competition. It was an uneven group of teams that all had to play in the one competition group. It was a strong competition but uneven in a number of games. All sporting groups have up and down seasons. It is very true to report that our A grade grand final between Valley United club, the season minor Premiers and a very strong club from Narrabeen on Grand Final Day gave an excellent exhibition of clever and very hard play. The crowd was on their feet as the game developed into a tough tussle. The ultimate winner was Valley United and they sure earned their win. It is very pleasing to report we had a very large crowd at Brookvale Oval on game day and more importantly spectators were very well behaved. The early games were also all of a very high standard.

I take time to mention that one of our bigger clubs Belrose who generally have 2 A Grade teams did enter a team in our area in our A grade Competition which was not as strong as previous years and, in addition this year the Belrose Club also had what was an exceptional A grade side of a quality that needed to play in a Major A grade competition. That competition was held in the Sydney Regional area. It is of a very high standard. Belrose was given permission by our JRL Association to play there in the Sydney Competition. And guess what ‐they gave a great exhibition of quality football in and walked away, very well deserving Premiers. Our congratulations are extended to the Belrose Club .We look forward next year to be in a position to revamp our A Grade and who knows we may well see the Belrose club back. We will try to provide a very high quality Open grade competition for all clubs that field A grade teams.

The game of rugby league in our Manly Warringah area caters for well over 2000 players. It has the excellent support of the Sea Eagles as well as the Leagues Club who without question makes a significant contribution to our Association as our major patron and sponsor. All clubs have delegates

Season 2013 Annual Report Page 9

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated that attend our registered association meetings and their support in promoting our JRL is much appreciated and of a very high standard. I congratulate club personnel for the very high standard of training and for making sure that all club members from under 6yrs to open grades have good manners. Our Association has a long season and I do thank and all club personnel as they give many hours to ensuring that members are respectful make good friends and are a credit to fostering our JRL.

Finely we do provide safe training and playing areas. This is not possible without the 1st class support of our local Councils and I thank them for ensuring the safety of grounds. Last but not least we have qualified referees and game day officials who contribute greatly to ensuring safe play.

In closing I pay a tribute and many thanks to my colleagues President and Treasurer Mick Covey, Competition Directors Kim Hunter and John Fox, Director of Judiciary Frank Cridland, Assistant Secretary Jacky McCauley, Operations Manager Danielle Kifooti, Assistant Treasurer Coralie Newman and all Office Bearing members for your continued support and for all the hours that you dedicate to the Junior League operations.

It is an honour to pay tribute to Frank as we record and reluctantly accept his resignation as a Director. Frank has for many years been Chairman of the most difficult area in our association ‐n Judiciary.

Week after week if an on field problem existed and referees sent players from the field Frank had the task of hearing all evidence in relation to what occurred and if appropriate issuing penalties. Players are penalised and a penalty can be anything from a caution to expulsion from the code. Frank was fair and it was his ability to penalise players based on evidence that contributed to ensuring week after week we had quality games of football that were a credit to our competitions. Well done Frank and thank you. You will be greatly missed.

Treasurer’s Report

On behalf of the Board of the Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League, I am pleased to present the Financial Statements for season 2013.

This year the junior league has been under increasing financial pressure with rising in costs including Sporting Union fees and Player’s insurance premiums.

Fortunately our 2013 budget anticipated many of these increases and I am pleased to say that we operated at a modest financial surplus.

More pleasing is that all of our thirteen Clubs were financial in 2013 having paid their required affiliation fees, nomination fees and senior insurance costs. My thanks to the individual Club Treasurers for their role in monitoring their club’s financial position.

In this year’s financial accounts, the major expenditure items included player’s insurance ($85,404.23), Referees Fees ($45,412) and Sporting Union Fees ($14,231.80) which represents 65.4% of our total cost in just three items.

It is important to acknowledge the financial support of the Manly Warringah Leagues Club which contributes to the running of the junior league each year. I am sure that the Leagues Club’s support during the Global Financial Crisis over the past few years has not been easy but the Board’s philosophy of supporting junior rugby league has never wavered and is greatly appreciated by all those involved in our great sport.

Our Grand Final Sunday at Brookvale Oval was a financial success for the junior league as we undertook to sell liquor for the first time. Although there are additional security and RSA staff requirements we made a profit and hopefully this can continue.

The Board will continue to monitor costs to keep our overheads down and I am pleased to report that we have recently been advised by our insurance Brokers that the player’s insurance premiums will not increase in 2014 which is a good start.

Junior League Administration Report

We completed our first Operational Review at the beginning of 2013 where we looked at the 2012 season. We reviewed the way we run and manage the game in the Manly District and were able to implement a few changes that saw us have a season draw submitted to Clubs early in the season and also saw changes to the way that we approached the Code of Conduct Panel. We also started recording our meetings so that accurate minutes could be distributed to Clubs. After just completing our second review of the 2013 season we hope to see further changes to streamline our processes and make Clubs within our District more informed so that we can have continuity of processes throughout our District.

With regards to pre‐season promotion for the 2013 season, the Manly Sea Eagles came on board and aligned us with one of their sponsors, Westfield Warringah Mall, and we were able to hold a recruitment drive in the Food Court in January. We learned a fair bit from our first effort at ‘The Mall’ and look forward to holding our next recruitment drive in January 2014 with a better format and location to improve our results. Thank you to all of the Clubs who came down to man the stall and speak positively to parents about the experience of being involved with Junior Rugby League.

The Manly Sea Eagles also assisted us with our pre‐season Manly Daily advertising. They helped us with branding our advertisement to align the Junior League with the Manly Sea Eagles and they used their relationship with the Manly Daily to secure publication of a full page advertisement at no cost to the Junior League.

In the 2013 season we were better able to utilise the Competition format on our Sportingpulse website. We had up to date competition structures, results and ladders for the entire season. We still posted our draws and results on our website in PDF format but we are hoping to be able to rely solely on the Sportingpulse competition Draws / Results / Ladders in future seasons.

We also commenced ID card printing for Coaches, Manager, Trainers and Ground Managers. We ran into a few issues with regards to accreditations not being allocated to volunteers member records in Sportingpulse but we hope that we can have that rectified in the coming season to make ID for all team volunteers compulsory. Player ID card printing continued successfully, even up to the night before finals games! There were very few instances of players being unable to take part in finals games because of the ‘no card no play’ rule.

We continued to run our annual Ground Managers course in 2013. All Clubs are increasing their numbers of qualified Ground Managers each year and it is good to see so many people volunteering their time to ensure that our grounds are run and managed well during games.

Season 2013 Annual Report Page 12

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated

Our 2013 Presentation Night was well attended and was a great success. We saw each Premiership Winning Club presented with a ‘take home’ trophy as a lasting memento of their season. Thanks to all of the Clubs that came on the night to celebrate the season. Thanks also to the Manly Leagues Club who helped us present a fantastic event to our members.

Thank you to all of the Club volunteers who do so much behind the scenes work to keep their Clubs running seamlessly. The countless hours that are put in by delegates, secretaries, registrars, Committee members and volunteers, ensure that our game appears to ‘run itself’ during the season, but without each and every one of your efforts, we would struggle to provide such a rewarding experience to our players and their families.

Thank you also to the Executive of the Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby League. Mick, Peter, Kim, Foxy, Bob, Jacky and Frank have all provided an unmeasurable amount of time along with their unmatched skills, knowledge and experience to running the game in our District.

Danielle Kifooti JRL Operations Manager

Competition Director’s Report

There were 157 local Manly Warringah teams registered in 2013, down from 162 teams in 2012 in addition 20 North Sydney teams played in the joint competitions, up from 18 teams in 2012.

Our Mini and Mod League Competitions continue to be strong in numbers with 53 Mini League teams and 60 Mod League teams in 2013 (combined total of 113 which is the same as in 2012).

There continues to be considerable talent in our Mini and Mod League’s and the continuing challenge is to retain as many of our Mini and Mod players as possible as they move into International League age groups.

For the first time since the 2006 season we only had one A Grade Competition. This was mainly due to the fact that Belrose chose to enter their number one A Grade team in the and Asquith played their two A Grade teams in the Massey Shield and Sydney Shield. Note Asquith were the A1 Premiers in 2012.

We were left with 15 teams entered into A Grade and there was not a sufficient number of teams that were capable of forming an A1 Grade Competition. Therefore a competition structure was put

Season 2013 Annual Report Page 13

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated into place that saw all 15 A Grade teams playing in the one Competition. The 15 teams were made up of 11 Manly and 4 North Sydney teams.

Valley United defeated Narrabeen in the A1 Grand Final at Brookvale Oval in front of a good crowd.

2013 was the seventh year of the Manly Warringah District JRL / North Sydney District JRL Joint Competitions from Under 13 years to A Grade. In addition two North Sydney teams played with the Manly teams in the Under 12 Age Group in 2013.

I would like to thank fellow committee members of the MWDJRL / NSDJRL Joint Competition, Greg Florimo and Brent Pigram from North Sydney District JRL and John Fox from Manly Warringah District JRL for their time, commitment and contribution throughout the 2013.

I would like to thank the referees for their co‐operation and contribution throughout the season.

Acknowledgement for the great work of John Fox, for the tireless hours John put in towards the betterment of our junior league competitions. As always John, I enjoyed working with you, thank you for your hard work.

Thank you to Jacky McCauley, Danielle Kifooti and Coralie Newman and for their co‐operation and contribution throughout the season.

I would also like to acknowledge the considerable contribution made to our District Junior Rugby League by our JRL Secretary, Peter O’Dwyer. Thank you for your co‐operation, counsel and assistance throughout 2013.

Also I would like to acknowledge the contribution Mick Covey for his duties as both President and Finance Director.

Thank you also to Frank Cridland our Judiciary Chairman and fellow Board Member for his contribution during the year.

To all club delegates, club officials, ground managers, coaches, managers, sports first aiders, trainers and all the other volunteers many thanks for your contribution in 2013.

Thank you to all the players that played in 2013, I hope you enjoyed playing the great game of rugby league and that not only will you come back and play again in 2014 but that you will also bring back some friends to join your club and play too.

Judiciary Report

Now that the time has come to step down from the Judiciary I must say thanks to those who put up with me in the position as Member and later Chairman.

To the Players, thank you for accepting our decisions without creating chaos. To the Referees, we may not have always seen things your way but we did give a lot of thought to our decisions. To the Advocates, we did listen to your pleas but tried to be as wise as Solomon.

To the Members who I served with, thank you for your contribution and guidance to reach our decisions which were made without bias or malice.

Over the last ten years we have found 135 players guilty of charges, 65% of the charges were for striking, 13% for contacting dangerously in a tackle, 11% for offensive or obscene language and 3% for a dangerous throw.

We have made a list of sentencing over the years and we hope they will help the incoming committee. Lastly I would like to thank Friendly for his great assistance with our paperwork and his organisational skills.

Finally all our decisions were not made lightly and we may not have always got it right but it was done without fear or favour.

Welcome Sponsors, Mums, Dads, and Players

Season 2013 started off at full pace back in February with a Charity game the Club organised between a team of ex NRL Stars and a team of former and current Avalon A grade players. The game was a huge success with $5000 being raised by the Club to donate to Sunnyfield Independence. A massive thank you to all those who helped make this Day such a success.

Another season highlight was the Club choosing to support again the Woman in League Breast Cancer Jane McGrath Day. How good did all our boys look in their pink socks to show their support for the Day and the A grade Team in their specially designed Pink jerseys? A big thank you to all the parents, players and volunteers who made this Day such a success, with the Club raising close to $2500 for the Jane McGrath Foundation.

As a Club I think it is important that we show how important it is in life to give back to those who are less fortunate than us and hope that by setting this example we may influence others to give back too.

This year our U/15 Team went on an extremely successful Tour to New Zealand and whilst they may not have won their games, the experience of playing internationally, experiencing a different culture, bonding even further with their mates, going to a Warriors match and having a whole heap of fun was well worth the “pain” of fundraising to enable the trip to eventuate. I know, as I keep hearing the boys rave about how good the tour was, that this trip is something they will remember and talk about for a long time. Congratulations to all those involved and thank you to John and Lisa Matthews who were on their second tour to NZ for providing their experience to make sure the Tour took place.

I am pleased to announce that this year’s U/14 team will be touring NZ next year and ask that if you are able to support any fundraising that they may be doing between now and then that you do so.

I am also pleased to announce that the following boys have made the train on squad for Manly Sea Eagles Harold Matthews U/16 Team next year: Cameron Matthews, Charlie Anderson and Sam Verrills. Look out for these stars of the future!!

Season 2013 Annual Report Page 16

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated

Also going places with the Manly Sea Eagles in the SG Ball Squad U/18 for next year are: Aaron Groom, Will Kelly, Billy Verrills and Liam Thompson. Good luck boys make the most of it!

The Club had another successful year fielding Teams in all age groups with the exception of an U/11 Team. In the Seniors we had an U/17 and A grade teams. All teams except the U/15 s made the semi‐finals. Congratulations boys and shows what talent we have not only in players but in our coaching staff and their support personnel.

I would like to thank all our coaches for undertaking the Coaching Course that the Junior League insisted they undertake to be eligible to coach this year and to all our other Volunteers that undertook either Ground Manager or League Safe courses. I think that it is important to highlight that many of our coaching staff are either ex Avalon players or current Avalon players and this just shows the passion these men and young men have for the game and our great club ‐ Avalon. It’s great to see the younger players wanting to come to the home games to watch their coaches play. I believe it breeds a great spirit within the Club and brings out the Bulldog pride even more! It would be remiss of me not to thank the Managers and all the rest of the support crew who so capably assist in bringing everything together week in week out for the boys. Thank you all so much.

This year we had two Teams make the Division 1 grand finals – Our U/17s and our U/14s. Our U/9 Team made the second division Grand Final.

Congratulations boys – fantastic effort.

Our U/9 Team showed tremendous courage and Bulldog pride on the day but Cromer proved to be a worthy opponent on the day. These young boys seem to have a great future ahead of them. Well done Blake you have done a fantastic job with the boys.

Our U/17 Team were also Minor Premiers – huge effort boys. We are extremely proud of you. Unfortunately after giving Mona Vale a 30 to 4 head start in the first half and despite having a second half revival of coming back to 30 to 24, our boys were beaten by a better side on the day and went down fighting 34 to 24. Another great year Snowy. Well done mate.

Our U/14 Team played their arch rivals North Curl Curl who had been a worthy opponent all year and were the Minor Premiers of their age group. Despite all this our boys were unstoppable on the day whitewashing their opponent 16 to nil!! A fantastic display of Rugby League. Congratulations boys! This Premiership in Division 1 is the first for the Club in over 10 years! Massive effort everyone.

Season 2013 Annual Report Page 17

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated

I would like to congratulate their Coach Gaven Sheehan, who was ably assisted by Brendan Payne and Paul Staunton for not only winning the Premiership but for being excellent role models for the boys to learn from. Lastly but by no means least thank you to their manager Nikki Wheeler for being so diligent in her role and ensuring the well‐oiled machine kept turning week in week out! I’m sure the Teams sponsor Avalon Tyres and Service must be overjoyed with your success in his first year as Team Sponsor!

To my fellow committee members thank you so much for your support throughout the season. You all have made a significant contribution in making the season the success it has been.

To our Sponsors thank you so much for your support of the Avalon Bulldogs JRLFC, without you our ability to function so successfully would be made that much more difficult.

I look forward to seeing you all at the Doggie Dome next year.

Michael Birtwistle President Avalon JRLFC

Beacon Hill Bears JRLFC

I would like to start by thanking everyone involved at the Club in 2013 for their valuable contributions to the kids, the Club and our community at the Bears.

All of our kids had a great year on and off the field. We have built a strong and supportive culture at the Club that has seen measurable success for our players. We have seen all of our players improve their football this year and enjoy being a part of the Club.

Many thanks to the sponsors that came on board with the Bears in 2013. We hope that they have enjoyed their participation in the Club and will continue to support us in future seasons. Our A Grade have managed to recommence their previous long standing partnership with The Parkway Hotel and we are enjoying a new and exciting sponsorship relationship with them and taking our place at the Pub and making it our home once again.

On the field we enjoyed increased player numbers in the Juniors. The kids all represented the Club in a fantastic fashion this season and we watched their skills and enthusiasm grow during the

Season 2013 Annual Report Page 18

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated season. We had two teams in our Under 6’s for the first time in many years and the kids all had a lot of fun developing the skills that will carry them through Mini football. Our Under 8M’s were undefeated all season and took out the Division 1 Premiership at Brookvale Oval. Our other Under 8’s team struggled during the season but had smiles on their faces at the end of the last game so they were a success in their own way. Both of our Under 10’s fell at the last hurdle in the Grand Finals but finished the 2014 season as Minor Premiers. We welcomed a new team in our Under 11’s in 2013 and they played a great season of football and we look forward to seeing them all back in 2014. Our Under 14’s struggled with injuries and school commitments and managed to play only a handful of games. Playing up an age group they played with a lot of heart and courage and we look forward to a more successful season for them next year. In A Grade we continue to plug along and grow the team with pride. We had a few good wins towards the end of the season and look forward to 2014 to build on our small successes.

Thanks to everyone who had a hand in our great Club in 2013. Thanks to all of our Coaches, Managers and Trainers for all of their hard work. Thanks to our Seniors for keeping the canteen doors open during the season. Thanks to our little Committee for all of the work that you do that no one sees but is vital to the management of the Club.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Manly Warringah Executive for all of their hard work and dedication to our sport during the 2013 season.

Danielle Kifooti President Beacon Hill Bears JRLFC

Belrose Eagles JRLFC

Well what a difference a year makes after a somewhat disappointing 2012 this year has been one of positives on and off the field.

The Club’s decision to explore options outside of the local A Grade competition and enter the NSWRL run Sydney Shield competition has been an outstanding success with Belrose beating Wentworthville 30‐26 to win the Premiership. On field success aside the boys have enjoyed the wider variety of teams this competition provides although not sure they are totally happy about

Season 2013 Annual Report Page 19

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated playing for an extra month!!

Locally, we have also enjoyed great success with 4 teams making it through to the Grand Finals being Under8s, 12s, 15s and A Grade. Ultimately 3 teams have enjoyed premiership glory. The Under 8s coached by Paul Clyne, Under 15s by first year coach Luke Grant and A Grade under the reins of captain coach Scott Handley all enjoyed celebrated wins. Congratulations to theses teams and everyone who contributed to their success. Unfortunately Tim Fitzgerald’s Under 12 side was defeated by a very strong Harbord outfit, theses boys can hold their heads high for a great season.

I believe that a season should not only be measured by the number of Grand Final victories and we have enjoyed a number of success stories off the field this year thanks to hard work by many people.

• Loyal generous sponsors. Sean Wilson and Brad Martin have worked hard to be able to hopefully provide greater exposure and recognition for all our sponsors. • Record numbers of plyer5s in the annual touch football competition • Player registrations slightly higher than last season • Repairs completed and the scoreboard in now working • AV system set up in the Clubhouse • Great club supporter base • Sydney Shield on and off the field

In general we have had a lot of fun this year. The Dinner Dance was the highlight at a new venue at the Manly Pacific where a great night was had by all. We are very fortunate to have a core group of volunteers; actually they are workers, who have again got us through the year. Everything from set up, canteen, raffles, registration, coaches, managers and trainers I can’t name you all but a very big thank you on behalf of the Club we simply would not survive without you.

Personally I would like to thank everyone for their support this year especially my fellow Board members but particularly my family who are so understanding and supportive on the demands of my time.

Christian Brothers OBFC

2013 has been a successful season for Brothers. The club fielded 12 junior teams along with A grade and all teams and players exhibited the spirit of Brothers both on and off the field.

The club saw great success and playing skill across all age groups with grand final wins a well deserved reward for our under 8s, 11(m), 11(w), 13s and 16s who all took out their respective premierships. It’s a wonderful result for the club and a real credit to all players, coaches, managers and officials in these age groups ‐ congratulations to all.

A Grade also put forward a great season and to Mark, Darren and the whole A Grade team well done ‐ it’s great for the juniors to have a senior team to look up to and for there to be Footy on a Sunday afternoon at Nolan's.

As a club it is imperative we recognise our game is a team sport and that all players who run out each week make a commitment to their team. As a club we should always strive to recognise effort, improvement and commitment at every level. As in all team sports it’s not always the most gifted player that is the best example of commitment, effort or the week in week out attitude of striving to improve. There are many examples in recent years where a junior player who never really stood out as an individual went on to become a top class athlete. It is for this reason that the executive this year has decided that every player who played for the club in competitive grades will receive a pennant as recognition of their contribution to their team and the club. The club also celebrates outstanding performance and or effort and the annual report recognises players in each age group that have excelled and congratulations from all to these individual players.

The season saw some great events including the bi annual golf day, barefoot bowling day, working bees, mothers night, women of league round, second hand boot and gear stall, the clubs own major raffle, the State of Origin night, Temora trip, Mudgee and Temora Sydney visit & U8’s playing at State of Origin visit, sportsman lunch along with the club hosting a number of semi and grand finals ‐ all of these events were a huge success and thanks to all involved from the club for helping with same.

Clubs are like icebergs in that only 10% of the work that is needed to be done is really able to be seen. Huge amounts of work occur behind the scene every day and week during the season. To all the people who have helped in coaching, managing, refereeing, setting up grounds, grounds

Season 2013 Annual Report Page 21

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated management, first aid, organising social events, helping with BBQ and canteen, liaising with the JRL, running raffles, organising uniforms and gear, golf days, lunches, membership, bar, newsletters, sponsorship, printing, signage and anything else I have overlooked a huge thank you.

To the clubs committee (Stef, Jacky, Karen, Lisa, Dean and Fox) who have worked so hard, given of so much time and served the club so well I pass on my personal thanks and the thanks of the membership. I have been very privileged and enjoyed the luxury of having such a great committee. I would also like to thank all members and parents for their support of the club and committee during the season.

Brothers will only ever be as strong as the members who choose to engage with it and for Brothers to grow and prosper I would encourage every member to look to involve themselves in the fabric of the club as we move into the 2014 season.

Cromer Kingfishers JRLFC

What another Fantastic year for our Club. We have had some great successes this season, not only on the field but off the field as well. In 2013 Cromer won the Junior League most prestigious award ‐ the H POP HALL MEMORIAL TROPHY for the first time in the history of our Club. The season has come to an end, I am confident in saying we can all look on the 2013 season with the utmost of pride at being a part of the strong tradition of the mighty Cromer Kingfishers JRLFC.

It was great that we were able to welcome a lot of new players to the Club this season .To all our faithful players who came back this season, I thank you for your loyalty and to our new players and their families, and I hope you enjoyed your season with our great Club.

All the players, coaches and coaching staff can look back and be proud of their achievements. Of the 18 teams playing this year we had 14 teams make the finals, and then 5 teams made their grand finals.

Season 2013 Annual Report Page 22

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated

Congratulations to the U/8m, U/9w, U/10w, and U/11w on taking out the premiership for 2013 in their division. To those teams who were not successful this season well done on the effort you gave for each other and the Club, I wish you better luck next season.

As President of our great Club, I am extremely proud of each team the way they all held themselves no matter what decisions were made on the field. They all wore the Club jersey with pride and all showed courage & integrity as players. I would like to thank all coaches and their coaching staff for giving up their free time to train your teams, without you we wouldn`t have a Club.

Our U/8 teams had an awesome experience playing in the curtain raiser to the 3rd State of Origin in front of 80,000 + rugby league spectators ‐ everyone had a great time. I’d like to thank Todd Smith from NSW Rugby League for letting our u/8`s be part of such a great event as a Club, we were honoured to be there.

It was great to hear that so many people attended our Family Bingo night this year. As the main Fundraiser for our Club ‐ it was so great that everyone came together and enjoyed themselves ‐ a big thank you must go to Amanda & Deb for all their great ideas and hard work. A lot of work goes into making this night a successful and a profitable evening. I’d like to thank also all the others helpers who pitched in and helped.

A special thanks to the committee and all the people who help the club on game days. For those who came down to field early to set up, fulfil all necessary roles during the day such as First Aiders and ground managers, for serving at the canteen and BBQ, who stayed behind late to clean up, and for those people who were there from the beginning to the end of the day and did all these jobs. The club could not have survived without you.

Last Sunday 8th September a Cromer Kingfisher junior, made his NRL debut at the “Fortress” Brookvale Oval for the Sea Eagles Members’ Recognition Round match against the Panthers. I’d like to congratulate him on this great achievement, and wish Clinton all the best for the future

Clinton played on the wing in place of the suspended Jorge Taufua, sending utility Tom Symonds back to the bench. While the tall and free‐running Gutherson, who has played most of his Rugby League at fullback, also Clinton scored the opening try in the corner on his debut.

Clinton has taken enormous strides in the last few years, playing for NSW in the Under 16s and Under 18s before representing their country in the Australian Schoolboys side.

Also I’d like to congratulate Clinton`s Dad Rob, he must be very proud of Clinton achievements as we are as a Club. Rob is still involved with the club running the raffles on a Thursday night with Chris Bailey. A big thank you for your hard work and support.

Lastly we are proud of our achievements on the field and the support of our valued sponsors has been vital in helping us to maintain standards and assist with day to day running of our very successful Club. However, without the generosity and support of our sponsors we would struggle to maintain the club we know and love.

Forestville Ferrets JRLFC

I would like to open by thanking everyone who supported the Ferrets in 2013. Players, coaches, managers, parents, supporters and sponsors have all contributed to make 2013 a successful year for the club. The continued willingness of people to ‘put their hand up’ has made the running of the club so much easier and enjoyable.

Season 2013 Annual Report Page 24

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated

And what a year it has been. We had our usual annual events beginning with a successful Registration Day back in February followed up with a very enjoyable Launch Day. Ladies Day and Old Boys days games were rained out, although the Ladies braved the wet, and the show went on. The Sportsman’s night featured Tiger legend and current Rugby League Commission member, and was a fantastic night for all. This year we also introduced a couple of new things to the club including a new playing strip, we hosted the Liam Knight Gala Day and “Thank you” function in the clubhouse, ran a very successful membership drive and the introduction of a badge draw.

As I mentioned at the Sportsman’s night we are also currently in negotiations with council regarding our use of the oval and clubhouse. As many of you know the grounds and the clubhouse were built by and maintained by the Ferrets for almost 50 years. We are just the latest custodians. Naturally we would like to keep things exactly as they have been, however the reality is that this will be difficult to achieve given our ‘legal’ position, the attitude of the council and demand for sporting grounds. Be assured, whatever the outcome the Ferrets will be playing at Ferretville.

At the time of writing we have one premiership thanks to our mighty under 11’s, but we are also hopeful of another with our Ladies team playing their grand final on 7 September. In fact I think this last weekend is a great example of what is so good about our club. We won a premiership with the 11’s, we caused a big upset with the Ladies steeling themselves to force their way into the Grand Final and the A grade going down courageously to miss the Grand Final by one game. “Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose...... ”.

At the same time we had teams getting together enjoying a beautiful sunny day on the oval for a picnic to celebrate their seasons together. We are lucky to have such a peaceful and picturesque location and it is great that we take advantage of it. The point is that being a Ferret is much more than just kids playing footy. Sure that’s ultimately why we are here, but if it was just that then we would have folded years ago.

Our club has a great spirit, great location and great people who bring fresh energy and ideas to the club. We have a lot to do, but our future is bright.

Have a great summer and get ready for a bigger and better 2014.

Harbord United Devils JRLFC

Year 2013 was another great year for the Harbord United Devils. We fielded 18 sides. While most sides made the semi’s we had 8 sides in grand finals. Winning 3 of those was a great effort and only losing a couple of those by a bounce of the ball.

This year for the first time in club’s history we fielded a side in every age group from U/6 to U/17 which I think is a fantastic effort for the club. I would like to thank the under 17’s who kept the side going through a tough year having to play short in some games and playing U/16’s where possible. I would also like to wish all the under 17s the best in their future football careers.

Congratulations to all the sides who participated for this year and to all the coaches and managers for a job well done .I know all the parents and the committee appreciate your efforts.

The return trip to Tugun this year was a great success from all reports and I would again like to thank Rod Adams for all the organizing to make it such a success. We look forward to hosting Tugun next year.

I would also like to thank all the volunteers that make our great club run. From Carol who works tirelessly at the canteen and her helpers Jacqui and Lucy to our Vice President John Winsor. All the BBQ staff especially Ralph and Howie and to the people who help set up and pack up the park on a Saturday. Special thanks must go to the Clubs Secretary Paul Chipchase and also Bob Butcher for all their support to me throughout the year.

I would also like to thank all our sponsors who without them the club would not be the success it is. Thank you to Harbord Bowling Club, Freshie Chickens, Your Style Home Additions, Harbord Bendigo Bank, Barry Taylor and Partners, Freshwater Village Butchery, Print and Signs, Cheries Pies, Drip Dry Bathrooms, Dairy Farmers, Green Grass Gardens, Keith Burrows Body Repairs, BET Flooring.

Once again I would like to thank everyone who contributes to help make Harbord United so enjoyable.

Finally, a big thank you to the all the kids who are the future of this great football club.

As this is my 10th and final year as President I would like to thank everyone that has been involved and helped with Harbord United over the last ten years to help make it such a great club.

The 2013 season saw the Club field 3 junior sides and 2 senior sides. It was a highlight to have such high numbers in the Under 6’s & 7’s. The hard work put in by Will and Martha to get the side on the field and to create a nurturing and welcoming environment cannot be underestimated.

Our Under 15’s were outstanding this season. Our boys were deserved minor premiers, their on field and off field behaviour is a credit not only to themselves and their parents but to John Hopoate. As coach you instilled discipline, professionalism and a sense of pride in the boys. I look forward to having the boys back for the 2014 season.

Our Under 19’s are another great bunch of players that do themselves proud. A big thank you to Marlene and Tehira for again getting our boys to where they need to be when they need to be there, making sure they are kitted out and well looked after. Your efforts and time taken with the boys makes the difference and is a big part of keeping the team together.

A Grade ‐ To all players, thank you for your efforts and be assured the Club was very proud of your performances. You are a very talented bunch of players. Your efforts at the club this season are very much appreciated.

There are many people who help the Club run smoothly throughout the year. Whether you are a player, coach, manager, running the canteen or on the BBQ, setting up the fields or being ground manager, we would not be able to operate without your contribution. To all of you, I thank you for the time you give to the Club.

Finally, I would like to thank Sue, Marty, Renee, Adam, John, Sharon, Will & Martha for the work they do and the patience they show towards me.

Mona Vale Raiders JRLFC

It has been another great season at the Raiders this year. We had 15 teams from U6s to U17s and it was encouraging to see our player numbers increased to 205 ‐ 20 more than 2012. Over the year it was terrific to see the enthusiasm of the new teams, skills and teamwork develop in all sides, but especially the fun the players and their families got from being involved with our great club.

On the results front, we won 2 first Division premierships with outstanding efforts by David O’Donnell’s U10Ms and Steve Wilson’s U17s. Nick Harley’s U11s and Les Rourke’s U10Ws finished runners up in Div 2 after very close and hard fought games.

The Raiders have been very fortunate to have had a stable and experienced Committee over the last few years to manage the club’s activities so well, to provide direction, address inevitable challenges, and to uphold our core values. It was a pleasure to lead the team, with everyone doing their jobs very well, producing a great collective team effort.

Sadly some of our team are standing down this year and I would like to say a huge thank you to Karen Gaynor has done a tremendous job as our Club Secretary for the last 3 years. Matt Hanlon has given great service as a Junior League Delegate for the last two years. Thalia Binding has been the driving force in building our sponsorship base and developing great relationships with them over the last 4 years. However, it is important that we continually bring new people and ideas into our leadership group to stay vibrant and relevant.

I would like to sincerely thank all our coaches, trainers and managers for their great patience, commitment and dedication. It was great to see how much the teamwork and skills improved throughout the year.

There is no doubt that the great quality, variety and service available from our Canteen is in a ‘league of its own’. Of course this only happens because of a lot of thought and hard work by some special people and we must say an enormous thank you to Mel Murphy, Mel Trbojevic and Denise Wilson who have been the mainstays of our Canteen team each week.

A huge thankyou goes to Fiona Kelsall who was instrumental in the development of our fantastic new Raiders website and Facebook page this year, together with Andrew Mckee from Gorilla Digital. The website with its wonderful feature stories, match reports from coaches, round results and the hundreds of fantastic photographs of all our teams have provided us with great entertainment and a Season 2013 Annual Report Page 28

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated tremendous history of the season. Other highlights were the outstanding ‘Champions of the future’ video that Steve Maxwell made of the U6 Blue team and Tania Marr’s fantastic Club History presentation in pictures to music.

Greg Stocken has again done an outstanding job as our Registrar building on his great work from last year, to ensure that all players were registered in Sporting Pulse in a timely manner had insurance cover and this made it easy for the Junior League to work with us.

David O’Donnell was not only our Coaching Coordinator this year, but also coached the U10Ms on Saturday and the U16s on Sunday. He did an outstanding job in guiding the U10s to win the Div 1 premiership, with a sensational game against a Beacon Hill side that had not lost a game in 2 years. He also did a fantastic job in melding together the Mona Vale and Belrose U16s team into a side that finished 4th, and showing great potential to be contenders next year.

Steve Wilson again showed what a great coach he is by guiding the U17s to another Premiership. This was the 13th year in a row that Steve has taken a side to a first division grand final and his teams have won 10 of those – sensational!

It has also been terrific to see four of our boys become Referees. Lachie James, Harry Binding, Oscar Murphy and Luke Trbojevic were simply outstanding and their performances were recognised and rewarded by being asked to referee in Div 1 and Div 2 grand finals, where they all did a great job.

Brett Delmege, Murray Warner, Mel and Mitch Murphy, Matt Hanlon, David O’Donnell, David Gaynor, as well as John, Jake and again did a terrific job in setting up Newport Oval for home games. They really are a terrific bunch, who had fun and with great teamwork always made sure that we were organised and ready to go by kickoff.

A huge thankyou goes to our Ground Managers and First Aid Officers for their combined efforts in helping the games at Newport to run smoothly. We have had to manage a few difficult situations this year, and whilst we never stop learning they were generally handled very well.

Thanks also to Mel Trbojevic who coordinated the chocolate drive fundraiser which was a great success. Organising a training session with , Matt Ballin, Brent Kite and for the team that sold the most, was just brilliant – well done Mel!

To our wonderful sponsors – Domain Residential, Cabe Investments, Viking Diesel & Electronics, Bakker Towing, Binding Prestige Panel & Paint, RDJ Tranz, Triple M Austereo, Mona Vale Quality Butchers, Pittwater RSL, Oxford Falls Welding, Barrenjoey Air Conditioning, The Pool Centre and

Warner Family Chiropractic, we hope that you have enjoyed your association with the Raiders and look forward to your continued support.

David O’Donnell has done another great job in producing the Annual Report. This requires a lot of thought, effort and expertise. No doubt you will get great enjoyment looking back at the wonderful memories that have been captured so well.

After playing a starring role in the Manly U20s side of the year, became the first Mona Vale Raiders junior to play First Grade, when he debuted against Penrith in the Sea Eagles’ last game at Brookvale. The large number of MV Raiders supporters who went to the game to see him play reflected just how proud our Raiders family are! Jake also was selected in the side and played a game changing role when he came off the bench against New Zealand. Congratulations Jake – these were great milestone in your footy career so far, but we all have no doubt that there will be many more.

Finally, I sincerely hope that you’ve had a great time being part of the Mona Vale Raiders this year, and look forward to seeing you again in 2014.

81 seasons and still going strong.

Thanks to all our teams and supporters for a fantastic year.

We were the highest represented club over the grand final weekend at Brookvale Oval which speaks volumes for the hard work everyone has put in. Only one team brought home the big one, the mighty U13 maroons!!! But I am sure there are plenty more to come in the future.

Our reputation, as a club people want to be a part of, couldn’t be better. This is what the committee has been striving for the last couple of seasons and I cannot thank you all enough for your efforts.

A huge thanks must go to out sponsors, Varney Real Estate, All Over Rigging, Websters Scaffolding, Local Sparky, The Sands, True Blue Recruitment, EMD and Polo Smash Repairs.

The biggest thanks however goes to our volunteers. From the U6 parents all the way up to our dedicated committee, Toni, Tim, Sean and Shaz. Without you there is no club!!! I cannot thank you enough.

Finally to Tracey, thank you so much for all your help on the committee and behind the scenes and when we turn on out new oval lights for the first time it will mark the end of 3 years hard work securing the government grant and the council contribution for it to happen.

And last but by no means least, congratulations to Garry Liddell, our newest life member.

2013, another year of enjoyment that came and ended so quickly. Much gratitude first of all goes out to all the amazing parents who returned to our club and those new ones who joined us this year. Without your kids North Curl Curl would not exist. So thank you for allowing your children to represent us, it’s been an absolute pleasure getting to know many of you.

Appreciations go out to all those parents who stepped up to help out in the canteen. Many hands make light work. Carolyn Elliott (Gear steward), Joe Askew and Mark Messenger kept the Canteen running and the BBQ firing. Mark Messenger (also web site editor and Club treasurer) and Les Elliott, (President and Coach of U14’s) contributed in keeping everything else around the fields in running order. And last but not least all the Managers, Coaches and Trainers, jobs well done. North Curl Curl would not function without you all. Thank you, Thank you.

The Knights this year successfully fielded 2 teams in the Under 6s, an Under 7s, 2 Under 8s, Under 9s, Under 11s, and an Under 14s. All teams had a brilliant fun filled season with our Under 8’s and Under 13’s bowing out in the Grand Finals. Fabulous achievements with great sportsmanship is what all teams displayed.

To all our sponsors my deepest thanks for your generous support we look forward to your continued support in 2014 ‐ Bendigo Bank, Skyline Bakery, Smyth Estate Agents Freshwater and the Dee Why RSL Club. Well what a year!! It had it all new team, new board and new coach.

It was a positive feel around the Valley drome early days with some fresh ideas being thrown around everyone was looking forward to a good year for the Spartans. Little did we know about the challenges that lay ahead? With the junior league deciding at the 11th hour that there would be no reserve grade or A2's, we were advised it would be an all in competition.

We were left with some hard decisions to make. Did we go ahead and enter two teams in the one comp and have the possibility to play each other several times through the year or turn players away from the club and go with one team. The decision was made that we press on with two teams.

It turned out to be a good result for us with two teams in grand finals. The "Reggie’s" going down narrowly and the A grade getting the job done in good fashion.

It looks to be another hard year ahead next year for both our club and the competition as a whole. The structure of the 2014 competition is yet to be decided.

Thanks to everyone who made an effort within the club this year towards our annual event days, home games and away games.

Good luck to all players, board members and supporters of the Valley in the coming 2014 season.
