² ² ² The Philip I. and Muriel M. Berman Papers: Collection I Held by Special Collections, Linderman Library Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania 18015 Call No.: SC MS 095 Berman Papers Page 1 of 154 rev. 05/24/2006 Biographical Sketch Philip Isaac Berman and Muriel Mallin Berman, husband and wife – the “amazing Bermans” as they were often called – worked together as a team throughout the fifty-five years of their marriage, in raising their family, managing their businesses, making frequent trips abroad, collecting art, and planning philanthropy. This biographical sketch is therefore an account, not of one person alone, but of two together, who devoted a great deal of their astonishing energy and considerable fortune to philanthropy and public service, in their home city of Allentown, their home state of Pennsylvania, and around the world, especially in Israel. Philip Berman was born on June 28, 1915, in Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, son of Joseph and Dora (Feingold) Berman. In 1932 he enrolled at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, but in 1933 returned home to join the family trucking business, from which he built his fortune. On September 23, 1942, he married Muriel Mallin. In the same week, however, he also joined the U.S. Marine Corps, with which he served in the South Pacific during World War II. Muriel Mallin Berman was born on June 21 1914, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, daughter of Solomon and Dora (Cooperman) Mallin. From The Pennsylvania State College of Optometry in Philadelphia she earned her doctorate in 1938 and maintained her license in optometry until 1984. In 1945 Philip Berman was relieved of active duty with the Marine Corps.

ABSTRACT The Dilemma of Justice: How Religion Influences the Political Environment of Post-1948 Israel and Palestine Sasha A. Ross Thesis Chairperson: Marc H. Ellis, Ph.D. This thesis examines the historical context, ideological traditions, and structures of power that animated relations between Israeli Jews and Arab Palestinians during the twentieth century. Cognizant of the “prisms of pain” that have come to symbolize both Jewish and Palestinian identities, this thesis assumes that identities are in constant flux and are often determined by that which they negotiate against. Its first section considers some historical forces, specific inter-group events, and internal political tensions that intensified the early Jewish and Arab national projects against the British and later pitted each group against the other. The second section examines the values enshrined in the sacred texts of each monotheistic tradition and the extent to which such have influenced the political engagement between Jews, Christians, and Muslims. It concludes that because religion can be used as a political tool of repression, a prophetic spirituality common to all three traditions is necessary for any sustainable project of social transformation and political reconciliation. The Dilemma of Justice: How Religion Influences the Political Environment of Post-1948 Israel and Palestine by Sasha A. Ross A Thesis Approved by the Department of Church-State Studies Derek H. • Radicant Israeli Art: from Past to Future
arts Article Radicant Israeli Art: From Past to Future Ori Z. Soltes Center for Jewish Civilization, Georgetown University, Washington, DC 20057, USA; [email protected] Received: 4 November 2019; Accepted: 10 January 2020; Published: 6 February 2020 Abstract: Mieke Bal’s concept of “migratory aesthetics” and the observation by Saloni Mathur and Anne Ring Peterson that “traditional notions of location, origin and authenticity seem obsolete and in urgent need of reconsideration” perfectly encompass the phrase “Jewish art”, and within that difficult-to-define subject, Israeli art (which, among other things, is not always “Jewish”). As Hava Aldouby has noted, Israeli art presents a unique inflection of the global condition of mobility—which in fact contributes to the problem of easily defining the category of “Israeli art”. Nothing could be more appropriate to the discussion of Israeli art, or to the larger definitional problem of “Jewish art” than to explore it through Nicolas Bourriaud’s botanical metaphor of the “radicant”, and thus the notion of “radicant art”. The important distinction that Bourriaud offers between radical and radicant plants—whereby the former type depends upon a central root, deep-seated in a single nourishing soil site, whereas the latter is an “organism that grows its roots and adds new ones as it advances ::: ” with “ ::: a multitude of simultaneous or successive enrootings”—is a condition that may be understood for both Israeli and Jewish art, past and present: Aldouby’s notion that the image of the Wandering Jew offers the archetypal radicant, informs both the “altermodernity” concept and Israeli art. Keywords: Arab; Bezalel; diaspora; diverse/diversity; Jerusalem Biennale; Jewish art; Palestinian; radicant; Schatz 1.

  • Eran Neuman / the Israel Pavilion for the 1967 International and Universal Exposition in Montreal
104 Eran Neuman / The Israel Pavilion for the 1967 International and Universal Exposition in Montreal Eran Neuman The Israel Pavilion for the 1967 International and Universal Exposition in Montreal Canadian Jewish Studies / Études juives canadiennes, vol. 26, 2018 105 The launch of the Israel Pavilion at Expo ‘67 in Montreal coincided with a period of enormous political tension in the Middle East, when Israel faced direct threat from surrounding Arab countries, especially its immediate neighbours Egypt, Syria and Jordan. After months of great anxiety, both within the country and in Jewish dias- pora communities abroad, Israel launched a surprise attack and the ensuing Six Day War resulted in a decisive victory for Israel and a major expansion of its territory. Against this backdrop, the Israel Pavilion at Montreal’s global exposition became the focus of international attention even as it did not directly address events happening in the country. Designed over the course of three years by leading Israeli architects Arieh Sharon, David Resnick and Eldar Sharon, as well as several artists and design- ers including Jean David, Shmuel Grundman, Igael Tumarkin, Shraga Weil, Naftali Bezem and Dan Reisinger, the pavilion was at the cutting-edge of contemporary architectural design. Its display concentrated on the history of the Jewish people and building a country in the Promised Land, despite the obstacles. Yet while the pavilion’s design did not deal with the tension between Israel and sur- rounding Arab countries, it did influence Israel’s approach to presenting itself on the global stage. The pavilion’s architecture and display were carefully thought through by government officials, architects, designers and artists who wished to portray the young nation at its best.

  • Camille Pissarro's Jewish Identity
CAMILLE PISSARO'S JEWISH IDENTITY Camille Pissarro's Jewish Identity Stephanie Rachum The Israel Museum, Jerusalem During the first decades of the 20th century, many Jewish emigré artists converged on Paris. Some of them, Modigliani, Soutine, Chagall and Lipchitz, to mention four of the most outstanding, played central roles in avant-garde movements. These artists became active participants in the vibrant Parisian art scene, and substantially contributed to the innovative currents that changed the course of art history. In late 19th century France, however, only one Jewish artist maintained a pivotal position in the vanguard of his time. This distinction belongs to Camille Pissarro, who was one of the principal figures in the founding, development and dissemination of Impressionism. Pissarro was a self-declared atheist and anarchist. Though of Jewish lineage, no references to his ancestry are to be found in his paintings. Nevertheless, the fact that he was born a Jew had an influence on the man and on the course of his life. This study attempts to bring together the scattered and fragmentary, direct and indirect allusions to Pissarro’s Jewishness. It will further endeavor to ascertain what insights these yield (when viewed chronologically and contextually), about the identity of a Jewish artist in late 19th century France. The outermost borders of Pissarro’s biography were touched by two dramatic events that influenced his intellectual development and had significant effects on his life. Both events were related to his Jewish origins. An emphasis will, therefore, be placed here on the first and last decades of his life, when these events had a meaningful impact on his thinking process.
