It was hard to argue with the hype. The team graduated only two varsity regulars on a team that had won 20 games and had advanced to the section finals the year before. The pieces were in place for the Red Knights to make a return trip to the state tournament in pursuit of the program’s 4th state title in hockey. Despite an early season victory over the defending state champions from Edina, BSM did not live up to the to its preseason expectations. The team showed flashes of brilliance, but it did not sustain any type of momentum. Playing with expectations is not easy and talent is not enough. The challenge of becoming a team is never a given, and injuries plagued the Red Knights throughout the season’s first half. With all of its players back in action the first week of January, BSM began to go on a roll. The Red Knights defeated Hill Murray 2-0 and kept its momentum by winning 10 of its last 12 games and capturing the program’s 22nd conference championship. The Section 6AA tournament is always some of the best and most competitive hockey of the season, and this year was no different. BSM skated to a 6-4 quarterfinal victory over a scrappy Holy Angels team and then went onto defeat Cretin-Derham Hall in the semi- finals two days later by a score of 2-1. #1 seeded Blake awaited BSM at Mariucci Arena for the right to a trip the state tournament. The Red Knights had defeated the Bears by a 2-1 margin in a marquee regular season battle just a month earlier. Everyone expected a great game — but no one could have guessed how the championship game would be decided. The teams skated to a 3-3 tie in regulation Halfway through the first overtime session Blake would be awarded a penalty shot. For the first time in Minnesota High School hockey history a section championship game would be decided on a penalty shot. The seniors who graduated should take pride in restoring BSM hockey back among the elite programs — and next year’s team will use the heartbreak of last year to fuel them as they continue to pursue their dreams. photo by Tom Morris 3 Red Knight Hockey 2020 Yearbook 2019-20 Varsity Roster Varsity Game Results No. Name Pos Year Opponent Score 3 Logan Lyke ............................D ......... 12 at Duluth Marshall ............................11-0 win 4 Seamus Foley ..........................D ......... 12 at Grand Rapids .................................. 2-4 loss 5 Ben Thompson .......................D ......... 10 EDINA .................................................. 4-3 win 6 Tristan Sarsland ......................D ......... 10 BRAINERD .............................................2-0 win 8 Jackson Bisson ........................F ..........11 HERMANTOWN ..................................... 2-2 tie OT 9 Adam Marshall ......................
