Strossmayer University of Osijek, Osijek, Croatia SUMMARY – Th e history of Croatian urology clearly shows its affi liation to the medical and civilizational circle of the Western world. Th e Department of Urology at the Sestre milosrdnice Uni- versity Hospital Center is the oldest urology institution in the Republic of Croatia. Th e Department was established in 1894, when the new Sestre milosrdnice Hospital was open in Vinogradska cesta in Zagreb. It was then that doctor Dragutin Mašek founded the so-called III Department, which, in addition to treating urology patients, also treated patients with conditions of the ear, nose and throat, eye diseases and dermatologic conditions. Dragutin Mašek had already realized that medicine would soon be divided into fi elds and had assigned younger doctors joining the III Department to specifi c fi elds. As a result, urology was given to Aleksandar Blašković, who founded the fi rst independent de- partment of urology in Croatia in 1926. In 1927, he was appointed Professor of urology at the Zagreb School of Medicine, where he established the fi rst department of urology and was giving lectures and practicals. -

It includes manuscript and printed books on different topics and themes, from mediaeval evangelistaries and missals to contemporary illustrated editions, print portfolios and artists’ books. Featured are the items that represent the best samples of artistic book design in Croatia with regard to their graphic design and harmonious relationship between the visual and graphic layout and content. In addition to the introductory essay, the publication contains the catalogue of items with short descriptions. 4 Milan Pelc CENTURIES OF BOOK ART IN CROATIA Introduction Book art, a constituent part of written culture and Croatian cultural heritage as a whole, is ex- ceptionally rich and diverse. This essay does not pretend to describe it in its entirety. Its goal is to shed light on some (key) moments in its complex historical development and point to its most important specificities. The essay does not pertain to entire Croatian literary heritage, but only to the part created on the historical Croatian territory and created by the Croats. Namely, with regard to its origins, the Croatian literary heritage can be divided into three big groups. -
Trajectories of Croatian Jesuit Historiography Brnardic, Teodora Shek
From Acceptance to Animosity: Trajectories of Croatian Jesuit Historiography Brnardic, Teodora Shek Teodora Shek Brnardić [email protected] Last modified: March 2018 Introduction The emergence of a Croatian historiography of the Society of Jesus took place in the often virulently anti-Jesuit and anti-clerical atmosphere that was prevalent in Croatia in the second half of the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century. This period represented a historical crisis for the Jesuit order in Croatia, one that provoked controversies that were largely absent in the pre-suppression period, unlike in many other countries where such disputes had existed ever since the sixteenth century. In 1932, Miroslav Vanino, S.J. (1879–1965) launched a scholarly journal entitled Vrela i prinosi: Zbornik za povijest isusovačkog reda u hrvatskim krajevima (Sources and contributions: Collected papers on the history of the Jesuit order in the Croatian lands),1 which marked a turning point in the creation of a Croatian Jesuit historiography. In doing so, Vanino intended to revise the prevailing view of the pre-suppression Jesuits, who were often accused of behaving in an “anti-national” way. This latter view had become widespread among the educated Croatian elite, particularly during the Austro-Hungarian fin-de-siècle. Vanino’s journal accordingly sought to correct this politically biased interpretation of the Jesuits’ role in Croatian history with articles written by both Jesuit and non-Jesuit contributors.2 The journal would provide the foundation for a source-based, critical history of the Society of Jesus in the Croatian lands and of its relations with the Croats. -
Conference Report
WORKSHOP Women’s Writing and the East-West Connections within Europe: Visualizing the Channels Spiru Haret University, Bucharest 25-28 April 2012 The workshop Women’s Writing and the East-West Connections within Europe: Visualizing the Channels took place on 25-28 April 2012, in Bucharest, at Spiru Haret University, organized by the Central Research Institute. As was announced in the Call for Papers, the workshop aimed at “reflecting on what kind of factors (Increasing travelling possibilities? Need for money? Increasing education? Feminism? Political developments? Growing curiosity?) were at stake when women put themselves to writing, publishing and entering into contact with readers.” On the technological level, the concept of Visualizing covered the terms of “maps, trees, graphs” (cf. Moretti) in showing influences going from West to East and vice versa, making visible proportions and percentages and illustrating influences exerted by a work, an author, a group of authors. Being a member of Group 4 within the COST project, Ramona Mihaila tried to disseminate information concerning the workshop in Bucharest and she sent invitations to Romanian institutions of higher education, to the Romanian Academy, to other foreign institutions and she promoted the event with posters (see poster), flyers, announcements in print media (see www.opinianationala.ro ), a radio clip (H2.FM), a video clip broadcasted on national TV channels (Etalon TV) and the university channel (see http://centralresearchinstitute.weebly.com/evenimente-iccs.html ). The workshop also had media partners, the television channels H2O, Etalon TV that recorded the presentations delivered by the participants and interviewed professor Suzan van Dijk, the director of the COST project, and associate professor Ramona Mihaila, the organizer, (see the interview: http://centralresearchinstitute.weebly.com/evenimente-iccs.html ) The workshop was organized into seven sessions dedicated only to the members of the project, two workshops focused on database tools, and a keynote presentation. -

GODINA Prof. dr. sc. Franjo Emanuel Hoško, u m. Teologija u Rijeci – KBF Zagreb UDK: 27: 94[322][282+262.3 ZAGREBAČKA]”1845/1855” [0.000.049.32](436-89)(439)(497.5) Izvorni znanstveni rad Primljeno: 1. svibnja 2018. Oktroiranog ustava i uvođenjem Bachova apsolutizma.
Dialectical Variation of the Egyptian-Coptic Language in the Course of Its Four Millennia of Attested History
Helmut Satzinger Dialectical Variation of the Egyptian-Coptic Language in the Course of Its Four Millennia of Attested History Abstract A language with a long documented history may be expected to show a great deal of dialectal diversity. For Egyptian-Coptic there are particular conditions. Except for the Delta, the country is one-dimensional, a feature that may make the distribution of dialectal differences simpler than in a country with a normal areal extension. Another specific feature is that all Egyptian idioms that precede Coptic are transmitted without the vowels, thereby obscuring all vocalic differences (which play such a great role in Coptic dialect variation). However, recent research has revealed that in the earliest stages of Egyptian language history there was a drastic dialectal gap. The feature best visible is the phonetic value and the etymology of graphemesˁ ayin and ȝ. hen Herodotus said that Egypt is a gift of the Nile, he was speaking of Lower Egypt, of the Delta: this wholeW area, with a north–south extension of ca. 170 km (in a bee-line) and an east–west extension of ca. 260 km, owes its existence to all the soil that the river Nile has brought down from the Sudan in the course of a long time-span. However, most people think that he wanted to say that Egypt (as we intend it), from the Tropic of Cancer to the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, would not exist without the waters of the Nile, as there would be nothing but desert. Egypt is bipartite: on the one hand, a small country like others, of triangular shape; on the other, the two long and narrow shores of a river that crosses an endless desert. -
Rincess Marie of Romania – Her Letters from the Balkan War
JOURNAL of Humanities, Culture and Social Sciences, Vol. 2, No. 1, 2016 ISSN 2393 – 5960; ISSN – L 2393-5960, pp. 111-129 rincess Marie of Romania – her Letters from the Balkan War P Sorin Cristescu, Ph.D. Universitatea “Spiru Haret” Bucharest, Romania [email protected] Abstract The most dangerous enemy of the Romanian Army in the 1913 campaign was cholera. That gave Princess Marie the opportunity to prove to the whole country for the first time and to herself her extraordinary qualities of best organizer in the most dangerous place of the war the cholera camp at Zimnicea. Key words: Balkan wars, cholera camp, flying hospital. All of the biographers who have written about Queen Marie of Romania consider that the Crown Princess always wanted her people’s love. But it was during the participation of Romania at the so-called Second Balkan War 10th July-10th August 1913 when she discovered the fulfilment of earning in selfless service. It was the turning point in her life (Elsberry, 1972: 91; the same point of view is adopted in Pakula, 1984: 205–208). The future queen explained later the events at the end of the Romanian Army campaign in Bulgaria that put her into contact with the horrors of the war: “It resulted in no battles, but whilst on enemy's ground our troops encountered as deadly a foe as cannons—cholera. I was brought into sudden contact with this terrible scourge when I went to visit the troops and the Red Cross hospitals scattered along the Danube. I cannot help looking upon this as a turning point in my life. -
