Thus, its society follows patriarchal lineage and subjugates the female community in terms of education, employment, parenthood and so on. Even though there are laws assuring women’s equality, the customs and practices demand women to stick with the domestic roles that Confucianism promoted. Moreover, Korea is one of the countries where the largest number of cosmetic surgeries happen along with strict oblique rules such as, a girl should not exceed her weight over 50kg and she should have flawless skin, etc. When many are comfortable with these societal rules, a few fights against all the commoditisation of the female body. Korean women start to use film, literature and art as a platform to question the gender inequality prevailing around them. This article undertakes a theoretical analysis of the Booker-Prize winning South Korean novel, The Vegetarian (2016), written by Han Kang, using Deleuzian concept of Body without Organs (BwO) to study how the protagonist Yeong-hye uses her body as a weapon for self-expression and freedom from the conservative South Korean patriarchal powers. Historically, the class will cover the colonial period, war and liberation, industrialization and urbanization, and the new millennium. We will engage in questions such as: • What is “modern” literature, and how might have “modernity” been experienced at the turn of the century? • What does it mean for a colonial subject to be writing fiction under conditions of censorship, and how are we to understand the rich production of textual and visual narratives during the colonial period? • What were some of the ways in which Korea experienced liberation and urbanization, and how does literature complicate our understanding of “progress”? • What has been the particularly gendered experience of Koreans in the new millennium, and how does language and culture continue to evolve under the rapidly transforming and changes in media? The students’ understanding of these issues will be enriched by assigned readings from other disciplines in order broaden the terms of our engagement with the primary texts and in order to consider the broad context of modern Korean religions, colonial and post-colonial history, and contemporary Korean culture and politics.     Contemporary Visions of the New Woman in Korean Literature By Mikayla George, junior, Media The concept of the “new woman” arose as a phenomenon in the early 20th century, emerging in Korea during the Japanese colonial period. This archetype was defined by a romanticism of the female as the most marginalized member of society, who could gain agency through modernization. In the Korean context, the new woman was associated with Westernization and modernity, and over time became ostracized and thought of as a negative consequence of modernity (Kim, 52). In contemporary Korean literature such as The Vegetarian by Han Kang, the colonial new woman archetype manifests in an individual whose disregard of traditional values leads to destructive consequences. Yeong-hye from The Vegetarian embodies the new woman through her subversion of traditional gender expectations and her struggle for bodily autonomy which culminates in a moment of transcendence of societal norms. In The Vegetarian, Yeong-hye’s subversions of gender norms are simultaneously fetishized and criticized, which echoes the treatment of new women during the colonial period. During the pivotal family dinner scene in Part I of the novel, Yeong-hye’s father forces a piece of meat into her mouth after slapping her and yelling at her repeatedly (Han 48). This moment of violence embodies not only her family and father’s disapproval of her transgression, but also the specific disapproval of her actions from men, and thus patriarchal society as a whole. This is represented through her father telling Yeong-hye’s husband and brother to hold her still when he force feeds her (Han 46).

Yoga has links with Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism based on a shared philosophical framework of unity with all beings and belief in ahimsa, meaning non-harming. There is debate in the international yoga community about the spiritual, ethical and health-related links between yoga and plant-based diets. This questionnaire-based research investigates the beliefs about the moral status of farmed animals and attitudes towards plant-based diets of UK yoga teachers. The research found that: (i) UK yoga teachers have very progressive beliefs about farmed animals; (ii) around 30% of UK yoga teachers follow a plant-based diet, which is 25 times the proportion in the general UK population; (iii) nearly 75% desire to follow a plant-based diet; (iv) over two thirds regard plant-based diets as best aligned to their yogic practice; and (v) UK yoga teachers with more progressive beliefs about farmed animals and greater knowledge of agriculture abstain from consuming animal products to a greater extent. The high proportions of UK yoga teachers following vegetarian and plant-based diets, relative to the wider population, are likely based on applying the principle of ahimsa, or non-harming, to farmed animals and abstaining from consuming their products.

    Journal of Contemporary Eastern Asia Vol. 19, No. 1: 31-42 DOI: 10.17477/jcea.2020.19.1.031 An Exploration of Korean Discourses on Public Diplomacy Kadir Jun Ayhan 1 There is great confusion over what constitutes public diplomacy (PD), who its actors are, and the relevance of non-state actors. In the Korean context, in addition to the general fuzziness of the concept, linguistic peculiarities of the terms gonggong and gongjung both of which refer to public, waegyo, which is interchangeably used for international affairs, foreign policy and diplomacy, and juche which is simultaneously used for actor and agent, add more layers of confusion. While the term PD in Korea is based almost entirely on Western conceptualization, these linguistic peculiarities prevent fruitful conversations among scholars and practitioners on PD. Against this background, this research note explores and addresses conceptual ambiguities that pertains to PD and the policy discourse on the topic, particularly on non-state PD in Korea. The paper draws on Korean government’s PD-related policy documents and Diplomatic White Papers and all relevant academic articles found in Korean-language journals registered in the Korean Citation Index (KCI), which are analysed to gain an understanding of the PD-related policy discourse in Korea. Abstract The Vegetarian touches the most delicate themes with great sensitivity, skill, and insight, and the combination of these three first published in 2007 and translated in English in 2015 by Deborah Smith, won the Man Booker International Prize in 2016 and received international acclaim. Han Kang, the South Korean author, had won several prizes already, including the Yi Sang Literary Prize and the Korean Literature Novel Award, emerging as one of the most significant contemporary East Asian authors. The Vegetarian follows the story of a South Korean woman, Yeong-hye, who decides to become a vegetarian after having a series of disturbing dreams about meat. This paper entitled “Transformation from Innocence in the Novel The Vegetarian by Han Kang” narrates Yeong-hye’s transformation. The Vegetarian by Han Kang is a heart-shattering story which leaves its readers with a rather strong feeling of unease. As it becomes obvious from the name of the book, the plot is focused on a woman who turns vegetarian. However, this story is not about dieting or healthy eating, the novel is more about people’s cruelty and violence. South Korea is becoming a major player in the world’s literary scene, beginning with last year’s London Book Fair, which spotlighted Korean literature. In particular, the country’s literary scene is making a name for itself with dark, transgressive fiction by female writers, some of which might not feel familiar or likable enough for American readers but they’re well worth the challenge.

A análise tem como ponto de partida a discussão da ruptura e da violência da palavra a partir de entrevistas da escritora Han Kang e da obra teórica de Jacques Derrida. Para a discussão do corpo feminino, serão utilizadas a teoria do gênero de Judith Butler e crítica à filosofia Neo-Confucionista na Coreia do Sul (de Sohee Kim). Palavras-chave: Corpo; Gênero; Pós-Estruturalismo; Literatura coreana de autoria feminina; Han Kang. Abstract: This article aims to explore the relationship between body, silence, rupture and violence of the word in the novel The Vegetarian (Chaesik-juija/채식주의자) (2007) by the South Korean writer Han Kang. The analysis has as starting point the discussion of the rupture and the violence of the word from interviews of the writer Han Kang and the theoretical work of Jacques Derrida. The discussion of the female body will be based on Judith Butler’s theory of gender and on criticism of Sohee Kim’s Neo-Confucian philosophy in South Korea.
