Wanrow Park Naturalist CAUTION: DO NOT GO BEYOND STOP #9 IN WET WEATHER This is your guide through some of the most fascinating landscape in Joshua Tree National Monument. The numbers appearing in the left margin correspond with numbered markers along the tour route. Mileage starts at the intersection of the Geology Tour Road and the main Monument road. The 16 stops along the 18-mile tour will require approximately two hours and will return you to this point. Please help us protect and maintain this natural en vironment so that others may benefit from it as you have. GEOLOGY AND THE MONUMENT. The face of the earth is not fixed or unchanging, but represents only a fleeting phase of a very long history. Sig nificant changes are now going on all around us and we are able to under stand present-day aspects of the earth only by a knowledge of the changes in the past. The science which deals with these changes is called geology. More precisely, geology may be defined as the study of the history of the earth as revealed in the rocks and sediments. This tour will aid you in understanding the desert landscape and the forces which have created it, thereby strengthening your appreciation of the natural environment. The area encompassed by Joshua Tree National Monument has been restless for more than 800 million years. Geologic maps of California indicate that perhaps as many as ten different times the Monument area sank below sea level and was covered by marine water. -

BIOLOGICAL GOALS AND OBJECTIVES C BIOLOGICAL GOALS AND OBJECTIVES C.1 Process for Developing the Biological Goals and Objectives This section outlines the process for drafting the Biological Goals and Objectives (BGOs) and describes how they inform the conservation strategy for the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan (DRECP or Plan). The conceptual model shown in Exhibit C-1 illustrates the structure of the BGOs used during the planning process. This conceptual model articulates how Plan-wide BGOs and other information (e.g., stressors) contribute to the development of Conservation and Management Actions (CMAs) associated with Covered Activities, which are monitored for effectiveness and adapted as necessary to meet the DRECP Step-Down Biological Objectives. Terms used in Exhibit C-1 are defined in Section C.1.1. Exhibit C-1 Conceptual Model for BGOs Development Appendix C C-1 August 2014 Draft DRECP and EIR/EIS APPENDIX C. BIOLOGICAL GOALS AND OBJECTIVES The BGOs follow the three-tiered approach based on the concepts of scale: landscape, natural community, and species. The following broad biological goals established in the DRECP Planning Agreement guided the development of the BGOs: Provide for the long-term conservation and management of Covered Species within the Plan Area. Preserve, restore, and enhance natural communities and ecosystems that support Covered Species within the Plan Area. The following provides the approach to developing the BGOs. Section C.2 provides the landscape, natural community, and Covered Species BGOs. Specific mapping information used to develop the BGOs is provided in Section C.3. -
Cultural Resources
Draft DRECP and EIR/EIS CHAPTER III.8. CULTURAL RESOURCES III.8 CULTURAL RESOURCES This chapter presents the environmental setting/affected environment for the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan (DRECP) for cultural resources. More than 32,000 cultural resources are known in the Plan Area and occur in every existing environmental context, from mountain crests to dry lake beds, and include both surface and sub-surface deposits. Cultural resources are categorized as buildings, sites, structures, objects, and districts under both federal law (for the purposes of the National Environmental Policy Act [NEPA] and the National Historic Preservation Act [NHPA]) and under California state law (for the purposes of the California Environmental Quality Act [CEQA]). Historic properties are cultural resources included in, or eligible for inclusion in, the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) maintained by the Secretary of the Interior and per the NRHP eligibility criteria (36 Code of Federal Regulations [CFR] 60.4). See Section III.8.1.1 for more information on federal regulations and historic properties. Historical resources are cultural resources that meet the criteria for listing on the California Register of Historical Resources (CRHR) (14 California Code of Regulations [CCR] Section 4850) or that meet other criteria specified in CEQA (see Section III.8.1.2). See Section III.8.1.2 for more information on state regulations and historical resources. This chapter discusses three types of cultural resources classified by their origins: prehistoric, ethnographic, and historic. Prehistoric cultural resources are associated with the human occupation and use of Cali- fornia prior to prolonged European contact. -

It is probably the most common lichen in Joshua Tree. The map of distribution of A. socialis in Joshua Tree is presented. We compiled a detailed list of records based on GPS data. NOTES. – Acarospora socialis is a common species in southern California occurring on the Channel Islands, in the Peninsular Ranges, and in the Transverse Ranges from low to middle elevations. It extends north in to central California and into the Basin and Range, Sonoran and Mojave flora. It is probably the most common lichen in Joshua Tree. Acarospora socialis occurs in the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts. -

1 9.3 PISGAH 2 3 4 9.3.1 Background and Summary of Impacts 5 6 7 9.3.1.1 General Information 8 9 The proposed Pisgah SEZ has a total area of 23,950 acres (97 km2) and is located in 10 San Bernardino County in southeastern California, about 100 mi (160 km) northeast of Los 11 Angeles (Figure 9.3.1.1-1). In 2008, the county population was 2,086,465. The nearest 12 population center to the SEZ is the City of Barstow, which is located about 25 mi (40 km) to 13 the west of the SEZ and had a 2008 population of 24,596. Interstate 40 (I-40) runs east–west 14 through the proposed Pisgah SEZ, bisecting it into a northern portion that contains about two- 15 thirds of the SEZ acreage and a southern portion with the remainder of the acreage. Access to the 16 SEZ from I-40 is available from exits at Fort Cady Road (to the west of the SEZ), Hector Road 17 (midway through the SEZ), and Pisgah Crater Road (at the eastern end of the SEZ). Hector Road 18 runs north–south through the middle of the SEZ, and a number of other local dirt roads cross the 19 SEZ. The National Trails Highway (historic U.S. 66) also passes through the SEZ as it runs 20 south of and parallel to I-40. The BNSF Railroad serves the area and traverses the SEZ from the 21 northwest to the southeast, running approximately parallel to and about 0.8 mi (1.3 km) north of 22 I-40. -

INTRODUCTION San Bernardino LAFCO has chosen to undertake its service reviews on a regional basis. The Commission has divided the county into four separate regions, with the South Desert Region generally encompassing the Morongo Basin, the Colorado River communities, Baker, and everything in between. This report covers the remainder of the South Desert region that has not been covered in previous service reviews. Most of the areas that are identified in this report are small communities that have little or no access to services, nor are they within the boundaries of a special district for which the Commission establishes a sphere of influence. However, a service review is provided to identify and provide information on the services delivered, or lack of services, within these community pockets that exist in the South -

California Dreaming Department of Geology and Geological Engineering University of North Dakota Spring Break Field Trip Guidebook 2006 1 Preface and Itinerary This guidebook was prepared by students who accompanied Dexter Perkins on a trip to California in March 2006. It is really a combination of two different trips, together designed to provide a view of a "cross-section of Earth's crust." There are probably too many stops described here for a single trip, but we present them in an order that is feasible if you have two weeks or so of time. day 1 Arrive in San FRancisco, pick up cars, and proceed north to the first stop at the Ring Mtn. Open Space Preserve in Tibuon. Here you will see various lithologies associated with ophiolites. Continue on to camp in one of the parks near Bodega Bay – Doran Beach is especially nice. day 2 Start with a visit to the classic blueschist locality at Ward Cr., near Cazadero. See additional references listed below. Then, in the afternoon, visit the eclogite/blueschist on the beach just north of Jenner. Return to campground for the night. day 3 Drive south 5 hours to a campground near Pinnacles National Monument. The Pinnacles Campground on the east side of the monument is nice but expensive. (Alternatively, rustic camping is free in the Clear Creek Rec. Area near the New Idria serpentinite – approach from the south). Be sure to drive Hwy 1 south of Bodega Bay all the way south, rather than going inland. Stop at Pt. Reyes along the way, if time permits. -

GEOLOGY AND SOILS III.4 GEOLOGY AND SOILS This chapter describes the regulatory setting and the affected environment for geology and soils, including regional topography, geology, geologic processes, seismicity, and soils, specifically as they relate to the Proposed Land Use Plan Amendment (LUPA). Ten maps and 3 tables support this chapter in Appendix R1.4. The maps illustrate soil textures within the DRECP area’s ecoregion subareas, and the tables present data, expressed in acres, for the surficial geology and soil textures in the DRECP area, as well as soil textures within Development Focus Areas (DFAs) for each alternative. III.4.1 Regulatory Setting Federal Land Policy and Management Act The Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) establishes policy and goals for the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) administration of public lands. The intent of FLPMA is to protect and administer public lands within a multiple-use, sustained-yield program that maintains environmental quality. Its greatest areas of protection are scientific, scenic, historic, ecological, environmental, air and atmospheric, and water and archaeological resources. Under FLPMA, BLM is further charged with protecting life and ensuring safety from natural hazards. Clean Water Act The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that states set standards to protect water quality through the implementation of point and nonpoint pollutant source controls. The CWA requires that all construction sites larger than one acre obtain a National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit, which requires preparation of a site-specific Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan. Stormwater runoff from construction may contain large loads of dissolved and undissolved organic matter, suspended sediment, and chemical pollutants in construction site soils—all of which can affect water quality. -

JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK GEOLOGIC RESOURCES MANAGEMENT ISSUES SCOPING SUMMARY Sid Covington Geologic Resources Division 12/15/03 Executive Summary In a Geologic Resources Evaluation scoping meeting held at the headquarters of Joshua Tree National Park (JOTR) in Twentynine Palms, California, May 1, 2003, the scoping meeting participants identified the following geologic resources management issues. 1. Desert crusts and desert pavement are being threatened by social trails near climbing sites and by OHV use. 2. Groundwater levels are being impacted by adjacent development, especially south of the park. 3. Groundwater quality is being impacted by urban development from greater Los Angeles. 4. Surface water quality and quantity is threatened by lowering of groundwater levels, invasion by non-native plants species, air pollution, and deposition from Los Angeles. 5. Seismicity is an important issue impacting health and safety, surface water flow from springs, and the siting of park structures. The Joshua Tree area is seismically active. 6. Mineral extraction and abandoned mineral lands (AML) has resulted in metal contamination, health and safety issues concerning open adits and shafts, and concern for bat habitat. 7. Soils are being impacted by the influx of nitrates and contaminants from urban areas and potentially from the proposed Eagle Mountain landfill. 8. Paleontological resources have not been adequately inventoried and are being threatened by loss, mainly from erosion. Introduction The National Park Service held a Geologic Resources Evaluation scoping meeting at the headquarters of Joshua Tree National Park (JOTR) on Thursday, May 1, 2003. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the status of geologic mapping in the park, the associated bibliography, and the geologic issues in the park.
