Dresden has a long tradition in this area, something that should be recalled now in times of growth. Dresden‘s special advantage – open areas are still actually available in the heart of the city for complex developments. So, for example, the area be- tween St. Petersburger Strasse and the German Hygiene Museum, where a whole new city district is currently being developed – the „Lingnerstadt“.

Traces of important architects

In addition to famous architects such as Günter Behnisch, Wolfgang Hänsch and Daniel Libeskind, Peter Kulka has also left his mark on Dresden several times. From 1991 to 1997, he rebuilt the Saxon par- liament. The Saxon state parliament meets and works in the modern building on Bernhard-von-Lindenau-Platz. The transparent glass fa- çades and the exposed steel skeleton construction are characteris- tic features of the building. The Saxon parliament was the first new parliament building in the new federal states. From 2004 to today, the architectural firm of Peter Kulka has rebuilt and expanded core parts of the Dresden Residenzschloss, which had been a ruin since Visualisation of the Lingner Altstadtgarten

16 „We don‘t want to create a large-scale residential complex, but rather a lively urban district. For example, this includes streets and squares with references to the Town Hall, to the German Hygiene Museum and also to the Bürgerwiese park. We envisage quiet garden courtyards. Some of the houses will have roof terraces and green roofs. For example, the Carusstrasse should once again have a bend, like it used to. The Zinzendorfstrasse will also be upgraded. The houses will have shops, businesses and offices in the ground floor areas. We want to build recognisable streets with visual connections and create a pleasant sense of urbanity in the city.

The special feature of the Lingnerstadt is, first and foremost, its direct proximity to Dresden‘s city centre. Secondly, there is its location near a comprehensive multi-section park area. This is a great advantage, comparable to having the Kurfürstendamm in front of you and the Baltic Sea behind you. At the same time, the area is so big that it will affect the city.“ View of the Promenadenring
