2011 Hon Secretary’s Report

Once again it has been a busy and successful year for the Dyfed Schools AA

Team

• Joint first overall team at the 2011 Welsh Schools Inter District Cross Country Championships at Brecon on 16 February 2011(Had won the overall team title every year since 1993)

• Won under 13 and under 15 girls team events at the Welsh inter district sportshall athletics championships at Cwmbran on Sunday 6 March 2011

• Won the 2011 Welsh Schools Inter District Track and Field Championships team title at Brecon on 3 July 2011 by 84 points from and Vale Schools

Individual

David Greene

A former pupil of Coedcae School and Coleg Sir Gar In 2011 he won the world 400H championship in Daegu S Korea in 48.26 (in 2010 he won the European and Commonwealth 400m hurdles titles)

In 2004 he was the senior Dyfed Schools captain and won the welsh schools senior boys 400 hurdles in 56.14

Paul Bennett (Penglais)

He won the AA of England U20 400m hurdles championship and competed for Great Britain in the 440m hurdles in the European junior championship in Tallinn Estonia

Second in javelin in the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games Competed for the GB under 20 team in the 2011 European Youth Olympic Games in Turkey

Dyfed Schools athletes won four individual medals in the championships

Kyran Roberts (Queen Elizabeth) won the under 16 boys race with Rhys Granville (Strade) in third place

Josh Griffiths (Amman Valley) was second in the senior boys race and Lloyd Heckler (Queen Elizabeth) third

Cardiff Challenge Cross country at Blackfriars Cardiff on Sunday 16 January 2011

68 Dyfed schools athletes competed for Dyfed schools against six other schools districts. Dyfed won the middle girls race. The scoring members were Megan Withers Tasker Milward, Kari O’Neill Tre-gib, Megan Turner Penweddig, Rhian Homer Bro Gwaun, Caitlin Thompson STP and Danielle Franklin SJL

2 In the individual races Dyfed athletes won six medals. Megan Withers the gold in middle girls race, Lloyd Heckler Queen Elizabeth middle boy and Liam Lloyd CCTA senior boy silver medals in their events. Christian Lovatt Amman Valley junior boy and Josh Griffiths Amman Valley senior boy won bronze medals

Schools indoor U16 Celtic Cup and under 20 match at NIAC Cardiff on Sunday 31 January 2011

Seven Dyfed Schools athletes competed in the match between the Welsh schools, Irish Schools and a Welsh Dragons team

Competing for the Welsh schools team Rhys Granville (Strade) easily won the 800m in 2.02.91, as did Kyran Roberts (Queen Elizabeth) in the 1500m. Kyran’s time was 4.16.91.

Also competing for the Welsh schools team were Kallum-Lee Evans (Tregib) in the shot, Aled Price (Maes yr Yrfa) in the long jump, David Omoregie STP) in the hurdles and high jump and Erin Walters (Bro Myrddin) in the long jump. David won both the 60m hurdles (8.45) and high jump (1.80)

Aled came second in the long jump with a jump of 5.92m, Erin Walters third in the long jump with a leap of 4.50m.Kallum-Lee threw 12.15m in the shot to finish third

Awen Rosser (Strade) and Aled Price competed for the Welsh Dragons team

Awen broke the match best performance in finishing second in the shot with a throw of 11.72 m. Aled came fifth in the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.99 and was a member of the Welsh Dragons team that finished third in the relay

Schools international indoor combined events at Glasgow on 6 February 2011

Three Dyfed Schools competed for the Welsh schools team in this annual event. Aled Price (Maes yr Yrfa) came first in the under 16 competition and he was also a member of the team that came first in the team competition .His overall points score was 3080 David Omoregie (STP) came 16 th in the same event with a score of 2430 points

Daniel Blain (Dyffryn Taf) came 14 th in the under 18 competition with a score of 1958 points. He was the second best placed member of the welsh schools under 18 team

4 Welsh sportshall athletics finals in Cwmbran on Sunday 6 March 2011

The Dyfed under 13 and under 15 girls indoor sportshall athletics teams won the Welsh team titles at the Welsh championships at Cwmbran and go on to represent Wales at the UK indoor sportshall athletics finals in Birmingham on Sunday 3 April 2011. Medallists Under 15 Girls

50 th anniversary Welsh schools cross country championships at Brecon on Wednesday 16 March 2011

The Dyfed (Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire) secondary schools cross country teams again had another successful day at Brecon

6 Eight Welsh schools districts compete in the Welsh schools cross country championships and Dyfed had won the overall inter school district trophy every year since 1993

In Brecon this year Dyfed won four of the eight team competitions (Y7 girls, Y7 boys, middle girls and senior girls). The junior girls and middle boys teams finished second and the senior boys and junior boys team came third

In the overall team competition both Dyfed and Cardiff and Vale scored 114 points out of a maximum of 120. It was decided this year to share the trophy even though Dyfed gained one more team win than Cardiff and Vale

At Brecon the overall trophy to be retained by Dyfed for the first six months was presented to the Dyfed team captains Heather Lewis Pembrokeshire College and Matthew Richards Sir Thomas Picton School

Eighty eight Dyfed school athletes traveled on a school day to represent Dyfed in the 50 th anniversary championship and at Brecon Dyfed athletes won a total of 50 medals (25 gold medals, 12 silvers and 13 bronze medals)

The success of the Dyfed secondary schools teams once again is a tribute to the pupils themselves and the support team in the Dyfed schools and in the local athletics clubs

In the home countries international event Matthew Richards was 24 th and Josh Griffiths (Amman Valley) was 26 th the under 20 race

Dyfed Secondary Schools Relays competition at the Athletics Track on Monday 11 April 2011

Amman Valley School won the 21 st Dyfed Schools relays competition organised by Carmarthen Harriers. Queen Elizabeth School were second and Tregib School third

2011 London Mini Marathon on Sunday 17 April 2011

Seven Dyfed Schools athletes competed for the Welsh schools team in the event which is run over the last three miles of the marathon course

In the under 13 event Nikita Neary (Dyffryn Taf) finished 15 th (17.01) and Emily Thomas (Penglais) 61 st (20.37)

Kari O’Neill (Tregib) was 58 th (19.40) in the under 15 race and Christian Lovatt (Amman Valley) 66 th (17.04) in the same age group event

In the under 17 race Liam Lloyd (Coleg Sir Gar) was 11 th (15.00) Josh Griffiths (Amman Valley) finished in 20 th position (15.13) and Lloyd Heckler (Queen Elizabeth) 34 th (15.34)

Twenty Dyfed schools athletes competed in the championships. Glen Elsdon Dyffryn Taf won the senior boys event and the Dyfed team were awarded the gold medals on the day

Welsh schools athletics championships at Brecon on 2 July 2011

Dyfed Schools again had a successful day in Brecon winning the overall title by 84 points from the Cardiff and Vale Schools. This is the 20 th time for Dyfed to win the overall title in the last 24 years

In Brecon Dyfed won the Middle girls, Senior Girls and Senior Boys team titles and came second in the junior girls, junior boys and middle boys age groups

The Charlie Hughes MBE Trophy was presented at Brecon to the two Dyfed senior captains Ffion Rees Bro Myrddin and Paul Bennett Penglais

84 Dyfed school athletes were chosen to compete in Brecon and every single pupil turned up in Brecon to compete for the District

Dyfed athletes competed superbly in Brecon winning a total of 77 medals. 29 were gold, 31 silver and 17 bronze

Sixteen Dyfed School athletes have been chosen for the Welsh schools team for the middle age group international schools match in Cardiff on Saturday 16 July 2011

Welsh Schools NASUWT Cup and Plate Final in Brecon on Wednesday 13 July 2011

Dyfed had the best ever results in this year’s event, winning three of the six cup team competitions and one plate team competition with Sir Thomas Picton School Haverfordwest being awarded the Charlie Hughes memorial trophy as the top school in the 2011 competition

39 schools from the eight schools districts competed this year in Brecon. Sir Thomas Picton School won the Junior Boys and Middle Girls Cups and Tregib School came first in the Junior Girls Cup competition. Bro Myrddin School Carmarthen won the Middle Girls plate competition

In the other three team competitions Amman Valley School came second in the junior girls plate and Dyffryn Taf were also second in the junior boys plate team competition. Ysgol Preseli were third in the middle boys plate and Sir Thomas Picton finished sixth in the middle boys cup event

Seventeen Dyfed Schools members competed for the Welsh schools team and they all performed very well

Carys Mansfield (Queen Elizabeth) won a bronze medal in the javelin with a throw of 39.29

Llyr Jamieson (Dyffryn Teifi) was a member of the silver medal winning 4 x 400 metres team 3.23.06. Mathew Davies (Tregib) and Shaun Pearce (Glan y Mor) were members of the Welsh schools team who finished third in the 4 x 100 metres relay 43.66 and Lauren Bell (Bro Gwaun) also a member of the bronze winning 4x300 girls relay team (2.26.02)

Eight Dyfed Schools athletes competed for the Welsh schools team

Llyr Jamieson (Dyffryn Teifi) was a member of the winning 4 x 400 metres team with a time of 3.22.29. Girls captain Awen Rosser (Strade) won a silver medal in the discus event with a throw of 37.06m. Lloyd Heckler (Queen Elizabeth), the boys captain gained a bronze medal in the 3000 metres with a personal best time of 9.00.38. Daniel Blain (Dyffryn Taf) was 4 th in the 100m hurdles in a time of 13.72 and Kyran Roberts 5th (Queen Elizabeth) in the 1500m (4.11.91). Mathew Davies (Tregib) was a member of the Welsh schools 4x 100m team that finished 4 th in a fine time of 43.17. Aaron Willmott (Emlyn) recorded a personal best performance of 57.98 in finishing 7th in the 400m hurdles. Lauren Bell (Bro Gwaun) came 8 th in the 800 (2.26.02)
