ANNUAL REPORT 2018 POLISH ACADEMY of SCIENCES of ACADEMY POLISH the Order of the White Eagle ANNUAL REPORT 2018 POLISH ACADEMY of SCIENCES of ACADEMY POLISH The Order of the White Eagle The oldest and highest state decoration of the Republic of Poland, awarded for remarkable civil and military merits, during the time of peace and war, for the glory and development of the Republic of Poland. It is awarded to the most eminent Poles and the highest-ranking representatives of foreign countries. In 2017 President Andrzej Duda decorated two members of the Polish Acad- emy of Sciences with the Order of the White Eagle in recognition of their contribution to the development of Polish medicine and for their achieve- ments in scientific and research work: Professor Ryszard Jerzy Gryglewski Polish pharmacologist and physician, ordinary member of the Polish Academy of Sciences since 1991, Professor emeritus at the Collegium Medi- cum, Jagellonian University, recipient of honorary doctorates from numerous universities worldwide. In 1976, together with S. Bunting, J. Vane and S. Moncada, he discovered prostacyclin, which set off many further scientific discoveries. A year later he discovered the first selective inhibitor of throm- boxanes. One of the most-cited authors in the world literature in the field of biomedical sciences in the A. HRECHOROWICZ/KPRP A. years 1965‒2005. Professor Mieczysław Chorąży Specialist in biochemistry and molecular biology of cancer, ordinary member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, longtime Head of the Department of Biology of Cancer of the Maria Skłodowska-Curie Institute – Oncology Center in Gliwice. Recipient of the title of doctor honoris causa from the Medi- cal University of Bialystok and Medical University of Silesia. The year 2017 witnessed a clear decision of the Polish Academy of Sciences on the protection of the Białowieża Forest against the rash deforestation. During the past year, the Polish Academy of Sciences repeatedly called for urgent development of a coherent strategy for the protection of this unique ancient habitat and conservation area, above all taking into account the facts and results of scientific research. In the issued statement, we have indicated the need to solve complex socio-ecological problems arising in this area by developing uniform legal regulations that will not only help to protect the Białowieża Forest more affectively, but also gain favor with the local community. Another important issue that we have been intensely involved in last year is the fight against smog. Smog is a real problem in Poland that affects the health and lives of millions of people. High concentrations of suspended dust and benzo(a)pyrene may increase the risk of developing cancer, chronic respiratory, and cardiovascular diseases. In this context, micro heat and power plants and small electrostatic precipitators, developed with particular concern for the environment at the PAS Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery in Gdańsk, constitute a substantial contribution of the Polish Academy of Sciences to innovative anti-smog technologies. The third extremely significant matter is the fight against diseases transmitted by ticks – Poland belongs to countries with high incidence rates of tick-borne diseases. The first step to get a long- term research initiative off the ground has already been taken. The meeting of the Interdisciplinary Team for Preventing Tick-borne Infections was organized under the PAS patronage and over 50 representatives of science and business circles met in Wrocław to share their views on this matter. In 2017, representatives of the Polish Academy of Sciences – the leading state research institu- tion in Poland – participated in the work of the National Congress of Science, formulating pro- posals for systemic changes in science and higher education. Within the Academy, the project of establishing the PAS University, announced a year earlier, contributed to a several-month discus- sion on the reform of the Polish Academy of Sciences. There are many ideas regarding the future of the Academy. However, the discussion which directin the Academy should proceed remains at the discretion of the PAS community, and above all the PAS Members.     NAUKA 2/2017 • 169–176 RYSZARD PRZEWŁOCKI*, EDMUND PRZEGALIŃSKI** Jerzy Vetulani – naukowiec, popularyzator neuronauki, artysta W dniu 6 kwietnia 2017 roku w Krakowie zmarł prof. Jerzy Vetulani. Żył 81 lat i do ostatnich dni przed tragicznym wypadkiem pozostawał niezwykle aktywny. Był wybit- nym neurobiologiem, neurofarmakologiem, biochemikiem i badaczem mózgu. Urodził się w 1936 roku w rodzinie profesora Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, wybitnego histo- ryka i teoretyka prawa kanonicznego, członka PAU, Adama Vetulaniego. Matka była asystentką u sławnego histologa i anatoma prof. Ferdynanda Henryka Hoyera na tej samej uczelni. Edukację w szkole podstawowej rozpoczął na tajnych kompletach, w cza- sie niemieckiej okupacji. Po wojnie uczęszczał do dwóch krakowskich szkół: Liceum im. Henryka Sienkiewicza oraz słynącego z wybitnych uczniów, krakowskiego Liceum Bartłomieja Nowodworskiego, które ukończył maturą w roku 1952. Matura otwarła mu * Prof. dr hab. The exhibition’s origins In 2007, the exhibition “Europe is our history! 50 years of European construction”, designed and produced by Tempora SA at the request of the Museum of Europe, was presented in Brussels on the occasion of the anniversary of the Treaties of Rome. The exhibition was quite naturally addressed at all Europeans, but in particular, with it being presented in Brussels, was aimed at an audience drawn from the founding Member States of the European Union. In 2009, at the request of the Municipality of Wroclaw, the exhibition was presented in Poland in a version adapted for a Polish audience. The Cardinal Kominek (1903-1974) was part of this adaptation which enabled us to discover his initiatives for reconciliation in Europe. This gave rise to the itinerant exhibition which, after Italy (The Vatican), Germany (Berlin) and Poland (Wroclaw), is today presented in Brussels: it allows us to discover the initiatives, of which most Belgians are largely unaware, of this Polish prelate in favor of reconciliation that was long thought impossible, between Germans and Poles. And therefore, more extensively between Europeans. 2. A kiedy reporterka uparcie kontynuowała, że przecież to temat, który jest interesujący w ogóle i bez względu na wszystko, 80-letni Profesor posta- nowił wyjaśnić: „W moim wieku ma się już poczucie, że jednak trzeba przygotować się do ostatniego etapu życia. Jeszcze 30 lat, może 40…, ale więcej niż 120 lat ludzie nie dożywają”. Choć potrafił żartować z każdej sytuacji i na każdy temat, ta publikacja nie jest wyłącznie zbiorem dow- cipów. Nie koncentruje się też na zaskakujących scen- kach z jego życia, mimo że łatwo wprawiał swoich studentów, znajomych, a nawet najbliższych przyja- ciół w osłupienie. 5 Kompilacja najróżniejszych anegdotycznych wspom nień samego Profesora i o Profesorze obej - muje sytuacje zarówno sprzed wielu lat, jak i te, które miały miejsce zupełnie niedawno.

    Rocznik Polskiej Akademii Umiejętności. Rok 2016/2017 Jerzy Adam Gracjan Vetulani 21 I 1936–6 IV 2017 W dniu 6 kwietnia 2017 r., w godzinach wieczornych, odszedł na zawsze prof. Jerzy Vetulani, wybitny naukowiec, psychofarmakolog, neurobiolog, biochemik, profesor nauk przyrodniczych, popularyzator wiedzy, człowiek zasłużony dla życia kulturalnego i społecznego. Urodził się 21 stycznia 1936 r. w Krakowie, w rodzinie profesorskiej. Ojciec był profesorem historii prawa polskiego i wybitnym znawcą prawa kanonicznego, a matka doktorem filozofii ze specjalizacją biologii. Naukę szkolną rozpoczął podczas drugiej wojny światowej na tajnych kompletach, a potem kontynuował w Szkole Ćwiczeń. W 1948 r. zaczął uczęszczać do Liceum im. H. Sienkiewicza w Krakowie, a po jego rozwiązaniu – do Liceum B. Nowodworskiego, które ukończył w roku 1952 ze świadectwem dojrzałości z wyróżnieniem. W tym samym roku został przyjęty na studia biologiczne na Wydziale Biologii i Nauk o Ziemi UJ, które kontynuował na specjalności fizjologia zwierząt. Już w okresie studiów (jako student IV ro- ku) w marcu 1956 r. rozpoczął pracę naukową jako wolontariusz w Zakła- dzie Farmakologii PAN, kierowanym przez prof. Janusza Supniewskiego. W 1957 r. uzyskał tytuł magistra biologii i następnie od września 1957 r. podjął pracę asystenta na pół etatu. Równocześnie rozpoczął studia che- miczne na Wydziale Matematyczno-Fizyczno-Chemicznym UJ, które ukoń- czył w roku 1962 (specjalność – chemia teoretyczna). W 1967 r., na pod- stawie dysertacji o działaniu pochodnych izoksazolu i pirazolu na me- tabolizm ustroju zwierzęcego, przedstawionej w Instytucie Immunologii i Terapii Doświadczalnej PAN we Wrocławiu (promotor – prof. Józef Hano), uzyskał stopień naukowy doktora nauk przyrodniczych. Wkrótce potem, jako stypendysta Rikera, wyjechał na rok do Wielkiej Brytanii, gdzie pracował pod kierownictwem prof.

    Obituary Acta Neurobiol Exp 2017, 77: i–iii photo by Franciszek Vetulani PROFESSOR JERZY VETULANI (1936–2017) Professor Jerzy Vetulani was born in Krakow on January 21th 1936 in the family of scientists of the Jagiellonian University. His father was an outstanding historian and theorist of canon law, and his mother was a biologist. He spent his childhood in Krakow and after the second world war attended the prestigious Nowodworski High School. In year 1952 he began his studies in biology at the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences of the Jagiellonian University. He graduated in 1957 obtaining master’s degree in biology. In the same year he was employed in the Department of Pharmacology of the Polish Academy of Sciences as an assistant and at the same time he started a second study in chemistry at the Jagiellonian University. His academic career throughout the highly active scientific life was connected with the Institute of Pharmacology. He obtained Ph.D. degree in natural sciences in 1966 from Ludwik Hirszfeld Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Wroclaw. In the same year he began his postgraduate training at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, where he learned spectrofluorometric methods. After returning to Poland he introduced these at that time very innovative methods to study effects of psychotropic drugs on levels of biogenic amines in various rat brain structures. He studied the effects of neuroleptics, MAO and dopamine β‑hydroxylase inhibitors on metabolism of biogenic amines. These issues were subject of his habilitation work, which he prepared before leaving for sabbatical in the USA in 1973.
