  • USTAD BAHA'ud-DIN DAGAR Baha'ud-Din Dagar, Son of The
USTAD BAHA’UD-DIN DAGAR Baha’ud-din Dagar, son of the legendary Rudra Veena maestro Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, belongs to the 20th generation of the Dagar family and also the nephew of the renowned vocalist Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar. He started his training on the sitar under the tutelage of his mother Smt Pramila Dagar at the age of seven. After three years of initial training he went on to learn the Surbahar and then the Rudra Veena under his father.Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar . Since then he has been responsible for keeping the Dagar Vani style of Dhrupad alive on the Rudra Veena. While Baha’ud-din’s music clearly reflects the training he has received from his father, he has incorporated a personal dimension to the depth and exploration of the raga. The vocal training he has received from his uncle has helped him incorporate the Dhrupad syllables in the playing of the Rudra Veena. This gives a unique and precise sense of timing in the cutting of phrases while presenting the aalap, jor and the jhala. Acknowledging his responsibility in taking the Dhrupad tradition to future generations, Baha’ud-din teaches both, vocal and instrumental forms of music to students from different backgrounds in various parts of the country in India and also abroad. He firmly believes that teaching is integral to his own learning and growth as a musician. In 1990 Baha’ud-din received the Lakhanpal Foundation fellowship for two years. He received a two year Fellowship in 1993 from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, India.

  • The Gundecha Brothers: New Shoots of the Dagar Dhrupad Tradition
The Gundecha Brothers: New Shoots of the Dagar Dhrupad Tradition SHANTHA BENEGAL For centuries dhrupad, the ancient and stately genre of North India, had been nurtured in the refined atmosphere of the princely courts. With Indian Independence in 1947 and the changing of the old order dhrupad was thrown to the mercy of less discerning audiences. A style of singing and playing that was austere, and which demanded considerable listening acuity and patience from its audience, dhrupad could have vanished had it not been for the Dagar family’s determination to uphold their Dagar bani tradition. Thus, of the four original bani (or vani, i.e., “schools” of dhrupad – Gaudhari, Khandari, Nauhari, and Dagar) only one style survived the metamorphosis into a relatively lighter khayal tradition (e.g., the style of the Agra gharana [family-based musical tradition] of khayal is derived from the Nauhari bani). With missionary zeal, members of the Dagar family have performed worldwide, recorded, taught extensively, and actively participated in dhrupad conferences all over India. At one such conference, the Dagar Saptak,1 held in Calcutta in 1987, it became apparent that dhrupad was putting out new shoots. Appearing on the stage with the senior Dagars was a new generation of dhrupad aspirants – both from within and outside the Dagar family. Among them was Ramakant Gundecha, who gave able support to his guru Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar. On a recent tour of the United States, Ramakant and his brother Umakant Gundecha performed together on over twenty stages for SPICMACAY,2 speaking to student audiences through their music.

  • An Introduction to Dhrupad Performance Platforms of India Samarpita Chatterjee (Mukherjee)* & Sabyasachi Sarkhel
Etnomüzikoloji Dergisi Ethnomusicology Journal Yıl/Year: 3 • Sayı/Issue: 2 (2020) An Introduction to Dhrupad Performance Platforms of India Samarpita Chatterjee (Mukherjee)* & Sabyasachi Sarkhel Abstract Dhrupad an ancient form of music was initially performed in the Hindu temples. Later on, Dhrupad musicians were patronized in the royal courts by the Rajputs and Mughals. With time, Dhrupad started disappearing in society during the early part of the 20th century due to the increased popu- larity of other forms of music and loss of royal patronage. Dhrupad became absent in music concerts, and Kheyal music started dominating music con- certs. Collective efforts of many people, musicians, organizations, and pat- rons initiated the Dhrupad concerts in Jaipur and Varanasi, as a step for the revival of Dhrupad in the 1970s. Before this time the All India Radio also took initiatives towards the promotion of Dhrupad. Slowly other Dhrupad sammelans were arranged across India. There were few Dhrupad artists of Dagar Tradition with a high level of artistry, who were not intimidated by adversities and, with their persistence and dedication, continued to serve authentic Dhrupad music to audiences through music concerts, as a concert artist and music concert organizer. Afterward, artists from other Dhrupad traditions played similar roles; as a result, in the last few decades, there had been an explosion of Dhrupad festivals/concerts across India. These festi- vals are organized by societies/organizations/academies (government/pri- vate) under the leadership of eminent Dhrupad masters. This study deline- ates an account of the significant Dhrupad concerts across India and, based upon the present concert scenario, concludes that Dhrupad seems to have been able to get back to the Hindustani Classical music audience.
