Few players of King’s era possessed his silky smooth skills, and coupled with his acceleration and speed, it made him one of the fi nest footballers of his era. King, 65, who died last month after a battle with cancer, is the only player to have won a JJ Liston Trophy and Field Medal (awarded for the best and fairest in the VFA Second Division). King polled the most votes ever in the Field Medal (67) when playing for Oakleigh, in the days when both fi eld umpires cast individual votes. He fell one vote shy of adding a second JJ Liston Trophy when he fi nished second behind Dandenong’s Danny Hibbert in 1976. After playing 11 games with St Kilda, King forged a career as one of the best players in the VFA for the best part of a decade. Not only did he represent the VFA, but in the competition’s centenary year he gained selection in its All Star team. After his VFA career fi nished, King turned to the suburban competitions where he carved out a career as a successful coach at Ashburton, St Kilda City, South Yarra, Noble Park and Oakleigh Districts. Stevie Carr, the Port Melbourne Football Club Team Manager, struck up a friendship with King in the early 70s with a shared love of athletics, footy and cold refresher at the Turf Club Hotel in Caulfi eld. Carr acted as the runner for King when he coached “He was a gifted athlete and he was a funny bloke. He was Ashburton to two fl ags before he went to St Kilda City and always getting his words mixed up and it would break us then South Yarra. all up. He ran at Stawell ‘stop it and listen to me’. He was an absolute tear jerker where he made a fi nal one year, he won the Arthur Postle with his words.” Sprint at Stawell along with the Moomba and Maryborough “He’s one out of the box Dekka King, he will be sadly Gifts. missed.” www.vfl .com.au 3 4 www.afl vic.com.au BRYCE CURNOW The hardworking defender Most defenders love more than anything else drifting forward to kick a goal, if nothing more than to remind their teammates how easy their role is.
