RAM6N GUTIERREZ is Professor of History and is the founding chair of the new Ethnic Studies Department at the University of California, San Diego. He has lectured extensively in the United States and in Europe. MARIA HERRERA-SOBEK is Professor of Spanish at the University of California, Irvine. Her publications include The Bracero Experience: Elite/ore Versus Folklore ( I 979), The Mexican Corrido: A feminist Analy­ sis (1990), and Northward Bound: The Mexican Immigrant Experience in Ballad and Song (forthcoming); she has edited four critical anthol­ ogies: Beyond Stereotypes: The Critical Analysis of Chicana Literature X Contributors ( 1985), Gender and Print Culture: New Perspectives on International Bal­ lad Studies (1991), Chicana Creativity and Criticism: Charting Neu, Frontiers in American Literature (with Helena Maria Viramontes; 1988), and Chicana Writes: On Word and Film (with Viramontes; forthcoming); she has also edited one textbook, with Seymour Men­ ton, Saga de Mexico (1992). She is one of three women featured in the poetry collection Three Times a Woman. Herrera-Sobek is cur­ rently working on a book on pastorelas. ENRIQUE R. LAMADRID is Associate Professor of Spanish at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. He is also the director of the Co­ nexiones Institute based in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico. Lamadrid has published numerous articles on Hispanic folklore. In addition to scholarly articles he has edited Un ojo en el muro: Mexican Poetry 1970-r985 and En breve: Minimalism in Mexican Poetry 1900-1985. He has also produced a three-hour sound track, "Tesoros de! Espi­ ritu," for the New Mexican folk culture exhibit at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe. LUIS LEAL is Professor Emeritus (University of Illinois), now at the Univer­ sity of California, Santa Barbara, and Visiting Professor of Spanish at Stanford University. Professor Leal is a highly respected scholar honored in both Mexico and the United States. Among his numerous publications are Mat·iano Awe/a, vida y obra (1961), Historia de/ cuento hispanoamericano ( 1966), Juan Ruffo (1983), Aztldn y Mexico (1985). Professor Leal"s extensive published works have been com­ piled in Luis Leal: A Bibliography with Interpretative and Critical Essays (1988). He was honored in 1987 by the National Association of Chicano Studies with the Distinguished Scholar Award, and in 1991 he received the Aztec Eagle, the highest decoration offered by the Mexican government "for outstanding contributions." FRANCISCO A. LOMELf is Professor of Spanish and Chicano Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His publications include Chicano Perspectives in Literature ( r 976) and La novdistica de Carlos Droguett (1983). He has coedited several anthologies, including A Decade of Chicano Literature ( 1970-1979) ( 1982), Chicano Literature: Contributors XI A Reference Guide (1985), Aztlan: ESJays on the Chicano Homeland ( I 989), and Dictionary of Literary Biography ( I 989). GENARO PADILLA is Associate Professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley. He edited The Stories of Fray Angelico Chavez and has written numerous articles; he is currently finishing a book on the formation of Chicano autobiography. TEY DIANA REBOLLEDO is Associate Professor of Spanish at the Univer­ sity of New Mexico, Albuquerque. She is a specialist in Chicana lit­ erature and has written numerous articles. She coedited the anthol­ ogies Las mujeres hablan ( 1988) and Infinite Divisiom: An Anthology of Chicana Literature ( I 993). TINO VILLANUEVA is a Preceptor in the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures at Boston University. He has published numerous scholarly articles in national and international journals. His poetry collections include Hay otra voz poems ( 1972), Shaking off the Dark (1984), and Cronica de mis aiios peores (1987). He is the editor of Chicanos: Antologia hist6rica y literaria (1980, 1985) and publisher of Imagine: International Chicano Poetry Journal. Preface The first sprouts of this anthology surfaced at the Modern Language Association Annual Conference held in San Francisco on December 27-30, 1987, when poet and critic Tino Villanueva invited several scholars, includ­ ing myself, to participate in a panel on colonial literature titled "Las cr6nicas espanolas y la literatura chicana" ("The Spanish Chronicles and Chicano/a Literature"). As its name indicates, the panel focused its scholarly optic on the analysis of Spanish colonial literature of the American Southwest. The participants of that panel, aside from Tino Villanueva and myself, included Professor Luis Leal, who spoke on "Armas y letras en la Historia de fa Nueva Mexico," and Armando Miguelez, who read "Conceptos de la Ilustraci6n en las cr6nicas de! siglo dieciocho en Aztlan" ("The Concepts of the Enlighten­ ment and the Eighteenth-Century Chronicles from Aztlan"). My interest in the colonial period stems principally from my work on pastorefas (shepherds' plays). Most books on the history and literature of the Southwest point to the autos sacramentafes (mystery plays) and pastorefas as some of the oldest examples of European theater; they were brought over by the Spanish conquistadores in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Given that these two genres are still represented in the Southwest, I began to see a direct connection between colonial literary writings

As a result of these changes, public laws were passed and agencies created to rectify or mitigate various environmental problems in the region. This phenomenon is analyzed in two different but complementary studies and perspectives, each of which contributes to a better understanding of the sociolinguistic factors that constrain its variation, as well as the social meanings of this feature in Argentina. Study 1 investigates whether position in the intonational phrase (IP), vowel concordance, and social class and gender condition pretonic vowel lengthening from informal conversations with native speakers (n=20).

Additionally, the Gabrieleno Band of Mission Indians–Kizh Nation was identified as a relevant party. Following the release of the NOP, the City sent letters on July 31, 2018, notifying the four tribes identified above that the City is planning the proposed Project (see Attachment 1: AB 52 Letters).

Without the initiative and sustained effort that the alunmi gave to the task, the opportunity would have been lost and the School would have been denied a valuable recapitulation of its past. Although this book is called a history, this name may be both unfair and misleading. If it were about an individual instead of an institution it might better be called a personal memoir. Those who have been most con- cerned with the task of writing it have perhaps been too close to the School to provide objective history. But if anything is lost on this score, it is more than regained by the personalized nature of the account.

There is a body of valuable hints, brief sketches, partial analyses, and suggestions, but many important fea- tures of the old life have remained unexplored from the structural point of view. Some of the data, of course, could not be procured in 1900, and are not available today due to the vicissitudes to which the Luisefno have been subjected. Accultura- tion serves to raise difficulties also, but the character of the old Luise-no culture is so distinctive that, given time and thorough familiarity with the people, the native features can usually be extricated from the Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo-Ameri- can elements. This applies as much to details of the old social patterns as to ma- terial culture.
