To the wonderful people of Mary Mother of Divine Grace Parish,

Last Wednesday, I received a call from the Archdiocesan Priest Placement Board, asking me if I would consider being a parish Administrator at St. Thomas the Apostle in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. The Pastor there has some health issues and will be away for an undetermined period of time. I accepted this opportunity as we Archdiocesan priests are asked to be flexible, sometimes more flexible than I ever expected!

I have so enjoyed the parishioners and staff here at Mary, Mother of Divine Grace these past 15 months. I am very grateful for all of your kindness and prayers. Let’s continue to pray for each other as we continue to grow into God’s likeness and share the Good News through our own efforts of evangelization.

Let us be gentle, patient and understanding with each other in this unique time in our world. Never forget the Lord is ever present in our lives.

May the Good Lord continue abundant blessings upon Mary, Mother of Divine Grace Parish!

~Fr. Dan Costello

Thank You Fr. Dan for Your Service to Our Parish May God be with you on your new assignment.

On behalf of the Mary, Mother of Divine Grace Staff, we wish Fr. Dan well on his new assignment and will continue to keep him in our prayers as he continues his ministry. Please keep him in yours.

With the gift of prayer, Fr. Marcin and the Mary, Mother of Divine Grace Staff

Christopher Columbus was born on October 31, 1451, in Genoa, Italy, and began sailing when he was just a POLAR EXPRESS teenager. His real name in Italian was CLOTHING DRIVE Cristoforo Colombo. His name in Spanish was Cristóbal Colón. Columbus was married OCTOBER 24/25 to Felipa Moniz Perestrelo, in 1477 who later died while given birth in 1485. Later in life, he had another

son with Beatriz Enríquez de Trasierra. In his early life, Columbus studied cartography, mathematics, astronomy, and navigation. These lessons were valuable for his future voyages. He had ideas to sail The Annual Polar Express Clothing Drive across the Atlantic Ocean to reach China and East sponsored by the Divine Providence Asia and spent years trying to find funds. Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain decided St. Vincent de Paul Society is scheduled to help fund and pay for the trip. He left Spain on for the weekend of October 24 and 25. WHO IS ? Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love.

Saint Francis of Assisi is one of the most venerated religious Where there is injury, pardon. figures in history. He was known in his Where there is doubt, faith. ministry as Francesco, an Italian Catholic , deacon, Where there is despair, hope. philosopher, mystic, and preacher. He is the Patron Saint of Where there is darkness, light. Animals and the Environment, of Archaeologists, Merchants, Where there is sadness, joy. Messengers and Metal Workers. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console; Francis was the son of a wealthy merchant born in the year to be understood, as to understand; 1118 who abandoned a life of luxury for a life devoted to to be loved, as to love; poverty and after reporting hearing the voice of for it is in giving that we receive, God, who commanded him to rebuild the church. So Frances it is in pardoning that we are pardoned. began to rebuild the San Damiano Church in Assisi, which was It is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.” badly in need of repair. In time he realized that God meant him to rebuild The , which is what he then set out to do. Francis lived a life of poverty. He formed The Franciscan Order in the early 13th Century, and its members strive to cultivate the ideals of poverty and charity, he went on to establish The and The Lay , together October 4, 2020 he and St. Catherine of Siena are the Patron of Italy.

Concern for the poor is a central theme in the life of St. Francis of Assisi. He is a saint for our time, because he stands as a model of peace in a relationship between him and our Lord, who is the source of all peace and love. As he took that love which was given to him and shared and preached that with all whom he came into contact with.

During the last years of his relatively short life (he died at 44), Francis was half blind and seriously ill. Two years before his death he received the stigmata, the real and painful wounds of Christ in his hands, feet and side. On his deathbed in the year 1226, Francis said over and over again the last addition to his Canticle of the Sun, “Be praised, O Lord, for our Sister Death.” He said Psalm 141, and at the end asked his ’s permission to have his clothes removed when the last hour came in order that he could expire lying naked on the earth, in imitation of his Lord.

St. Francis was now at peace - I think that being at peace is what embodied the life of St. Francis, for he was at peace when he was doing the work of the Lord.

A favorite book I often re-read was written by the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin titled, The Gift of Peace. At the conclusion of the book the Cardinal writes: “As I have said so often, if we seek communion with the Lord, we must pray”. One of my favorite prayers is attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi. Let us live life mirroring that prayer!

Sunday: Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: Columbus Day; Canadian Thanksgiving Day Wednesday: St. Callistus I Thursday: St. Teresa of Jesus Friday: St. Hedwig; St. Margaret Mary Alacoque; National Boss’s Day Saturday: St. Ignatius of Antioch

St. Teresa of Jesus Let nothing disturb you; let nothing frighten you. Gifted with a passionate spirit, young Teresa dreamed of converting Muslims and becoming a martyr. All things are passing; God never changes. But her mother’s death when Teresa was fourteen inspired lifelong devotion to Our Lady, and Teresa entered the , Mary’s order, despite her father’s objections and her own fragile health. Patience gains everything. Initially, she enjoyed her lax convent’s sociability and “busyness,” but mystical prayer and ’s collaboration inspired her to reform the Carmelites. Whoever has God, lacks nothing. When her ideals encountered resistance and brought suffering, she maintained her peace— and humor. Discovered devouring leftovers, she told her mildly scandalized , “When I fast, I fast! When I eat, I eat!” To nuns demanding less work and more prayer in the convent schedule, she retorted: “What we really need around here are fewer starry eyes and more strong arms!” God alone is enough! The italicized sentences here are her “Breviary Bookmark,” the simple, profound prayer of Teresa, the first woman . —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

MONDAY MEDITATION: LUKE 11:29-32 This generaƟon is an evil generaƟon; it seeks a sign. (Luke 11:29)

What did Jesus mean here? Surely it’s okay to seek a sign somemes, right? Aer all, Gideon asked God for a sign— twice! (Judges 6:36-40). God himself offered the shepherds a sign to prove that the Messiah had been born (Luke 2:12). So what was Jesus’ problem? The difference in this case was the atude with which the requests were coming. Jesus’ detractors were almost taunng him, making demands that they were sure he couldn’t fulfill (Luke 11:15-16). What’s more, they were asking aer Jesus had already produced countless signs of healing and deliverance for them to invesgate. Jesus saw their suspicion and stubbornness, and so he essenally said, “Enough of this. There will be only one more sign for those who refuse to believe: the ‘sign of Jonah’—my resurrecon from the dead.” Let’s be clear. It’s okay to ask God to give you a sign that will help you discern your path or confirm a decision you’ve already made. Just be careful that you’re asking from a posion of trust and faith. Give God the freedom to grant you the sign you’re looking for or to stay quiet and let you exercise your faith a lile bit more. Let’s say, for instance, that you are on your way to a job interview. Take a moment to thank God for his steadfast love for you. Thank him for his and for all the mes he has worked in your life up to this point. Profess your trust in his ability to provide for you and your family. Then, ask him to help you see your way more clearly. Tell him that you want to do his will, no maer what that may be, and that you will follow him, sign or no sign. Always remember that God loves you and hears your every prayer. He knows your needs, your quesons, your hopes, and your fears. He would never withhold a sign from you out of spite or to punish you. So if you have asked but he hasn’t answered yet, trust him and wait paently for his answer. Father, I turn every uncertainty in my life over to you.

Page 8 Teach me how to live in faith and confidence in you.” October 11 TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The first lesson we can glean from today’s readings is cause for celebration: everyone is invited to God’s feast. Isaiah writes that the LORD “will provide for all peoples,” from all nations, a feast that celebrates an end to sorrow, an end to death (Isaiah 25:6). In the psalm we swing that we all shall live in the Lord’s house all the days of our lives. In the Gospel, the “bad and good alike” are all invited to the wedding banquet (Matthew 22:10). What glorious news! We get to go even if we’ve sinned. But the second lesson today is sobering. Not everyone is allowed to stay. The king in Jesus’ parable casts out one guest who was not dressed appropriately. Really? Recall a different parable in which a rich man dressed in the finest garments who is suffering in a place of torment sees the beggar Lazarus, dressed in rags, resting in the bosom of Abraham. Now there’s a dress code? Perhaps it helps to realize that when we were baptized, we were told that we pot on Christ, that we clothes ourselves in Christ. Therefore, whether we wear gowns or rags, let us first put on that unstained garment of our baptism, symbolizing the new life to which we are called. After all, Saint Paul was in prison when we wrote to the Philippians. But even in prison clothes he radiated the “glorious riches” of Christ (4:19).

How do you go about “putting on Christ,” so that you can give witness to God’s grace in your life?
