Kriko Echo Givers Scouting / Givers / KRIKO ECHO ! Een scoutinggroep Scouting, ook wel scouts genoemd, is een door Robert Baden-Powell opge- richte internationale jeugdorganisatie. Voorheen werden de termen "padvin- derij" en "verkennerij" gebruikt. Wereldwijd is scouting de grootste jeugd- en jongerenorganisatie met in totaal zo'n 38 miljoen leden verdeeld over zo'n 160 landen. In Nederland wordt scouting vertegenwoordigd door zondag 8 mei aan het ster van kwart voor 10 tot half 1 Scouting Nederland en in België door de Gidsen- en Scoutsbewe- ging in België en door de Europascouts - België. De meeste scoutingfedera- ties in de wereld zijn verenigd in de overkoepelende World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) en/of World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). In veel landen wordt nog onderscheid gemaakt tussen Verkenners en Gid- sen. Dit zijn respectievelijk de jongens- en meisjesverenigingen. De activitei- ten zijn vaak min of meer hetzelfde en in veel landen zijn er inmiddels ge- mengde verenigingen of speltakken. In Nederlands zijn zowel jongens en meisjes verenigingen als gemengde verenigingen. Kinderen vanaf 5 jaar kunnen lid worden bij lokale scoutinggroepen. De jeugdleden (5 - 18 jaar) worden begeleid door vrijwilligers. Door Scouting Nederland worden trainin- gen aangeboden die ervoor zorgen dat deze vrijwilligers bekwaam zijn in het omgaan met kinderen van verschillende leeftijden. Spel van Verkennen Het belangrijkste doel van scouting is het aanleren van zelfstandigheid. Deze zelfstandigheid wordt aangeleerd door middel van uitdagingen, bij voorkeur in de natuur. Daarbij leren de scouts om samen te werken en leiding te geven, doordat ze in kleine vaste groepjes werken met hun eigen aanvoerder. Verder heeft scouting als principes een zelfstandige manier waarop scouts werken, leren door interesse in plaats van competitie en nadruk op het individu in plaats van de groep. Tezamen wordt dit de scoutmethode genoemd, die door Baden-Powell is ontworpen. De pedagogische doeleinden behoren voor de scout verborgen te zitten in een aantrekkelijk spel. Scouting kent ook een aantal morele regels, vooral gebaseerd op hulpvaardigheid. Omdat echte survival in de praktijk van een moderne samenleving moeilijk is uit te voeren, ligt de nadruk in de prak- tijk op een breed aanbod van spelen, activiteiten en sporten. Scouting heeft als thema het leven van avonturiers als verkenners (land- scouts), zeelieden (zeescouts) of vliegeniers (luchtscouts), maar gebracht als spel. Een deel van dit thema bestaat uit het meest herkenbare onderdeel van scouting: het uniform. Deze bestaat meestal uit een blouse of trui, een scou- tingdas en insignes voor behaalde vaardigheden. De kleur van de blouse hangt in Nederland af van de speltak en in Belgi" meestal van de scoutingfe- deratie. In deze landen heeft iedere lokale groep zijn eigen daskleur en -pa- troon. Geschiedenis Als militair commandant werd Robert Baden-Powell beroemd nadat hij tijdens de Tweede Boerenoorlog een lange belegering van Mafikeng in Zuid-Afrika volhield tegenover een groter Boerenleger onder Piet Cronjé. Hij was een specialist in militair verkennen en jongens speelden dit na met een klein zak- boekje waarin hij erover schreef. Terug in Engeland werd er druk op hem uitgeoefend om hier een jongensspel van te maken. Toen hij te gast was bij de Engelse jeugdorganisatie "the Boys' Brigade" zag hij hoeveel leden die had en dat ouderen bereid waren hun tijd te geven als leider. Het militaire marcheren met houten geweertjes beviel hem niet. Omdat dit de jongens zou vervelen, suggereerde hij dat ze met een ander spel meer jongens zouden trekken. De leider van de The Boys' Brigade vroeg hem een voorstel. Twee jaar later werkte Baden-Powell zaterdag 14 mei aan het lokaal van 19u30 tot 21u30 onder druk van zijn uitgever (aan spelboeken viel geld te verdienen) zijn ideeën uit. Hij gebruikte delen van zijn vorige boeken, las lite- ratuur over ander jeugdwerk en nam ideeën over, zoals van de "The Wood- craft Indians" van de Canadees Ernest Thompson Seton. Om zijn opzet te testen, organiseerde hij van 1-8 augustus 1907 het eerste scoutingkamp op Brownsea Island. Daarna kwam het boek uit in losse afleve- ringen: Scouting for Boys (Verkennen voor jongens) met als ondertitel A Handbook for Instruction in Good Citizenship Through Woodcraft. Het was een spelplan voor jeugdorganisaties. Overal in Engeland begonnen groepjes jongens zelf groepen op te richten. Hierdoor werd Baden-Powell gedwongen om een eigen scoutingorganisatie op te richten. In de daarop volgende jaren breidde scouting zich uit naar de rest van Europa en de wereld. Het boek benadrukt eigenschappen als vaderlandslievendheid, hulpvaardig- heid en onbaatzuchtigheid, burgerzin, moed, vindingrijkheid, discipline en im- provisatievermogen. Op moderne lezers maakt het soms een gedateerde in- druk omdat de wetenschappelijke en geneeskundige principes achterhaald zijn. De benoemde normen en waarden en later voor leiders beschreven ma- nier om met jongeren om te gaan (de scoutmethode) spelen in het huidige scouting echter nog steeds een rol. Het boek is een mengeling van uittreksels uit jongensboeken, verhalen, tips en trucs, kampeer- en spoorzoekervaardig- heden en aanwijzingen voor begeleiders. Leeftijdsgroepen[bewerken] ! Oorspronkelijk had Baden-Powel een groep jongens van 11 tot 17 jaar, maar inmiddels is scouting ook voor meisjes en meerdere leeftijden. In de meeste landen is scouting ingedeeld in leeftijdsgroepen ongeveer vol- gens onderstaande tabel. Elke organisatie heeft een eigen preciezere leef- tijdsindeling. leeftijd • tot 7-8 jaar • 7-8 tot 10-12 jaar • 10-12 tot 17-18 jaar • vanaf 17-18 jaar Scouting • Bevers •Welpen • Scouts • Rovers Guiding •Rainbow Guides • Kabouters • Gidsen • Rangers Behalve bij traditionele organisaties is de Scouts/Gidsen leeftijdsgroep meestal gesplitst in een leeftijdsgroep tot 14 á 15 jaar en een vanaf 14 á 15 jaar. Bij veel organisaties heeft de Rovers/Rangers leeftijdsgroep een maxi- mum leeftijd met soms een aparte leeftijdsgroep voor volwassen. Internationale samenwerking[bewerken] De meeste scoutsverenigingen in de wereld zijn verenigd in de overkoepe- lende World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) en/of World Asso- ciation of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). De WOSM richt zich op scouting voor jongens en gemengde scouting [1]. De WAGGGS richt zich op scouting voor meisjes. Binnen de WOSM en de WAGGGS werken een aantal Scoutingorganisaties nog samen in op geloof gebaseerde verbanden zoals de Wereldvereniging van Katholieke Scouts (ICCS) of op taal gebaseerde zoals de Comunidade do Escutismo Lusófono voor Portugeestalige scouting. Naast de WOSM en de WAGGGS bestaat nog de International Scout and Guide Fellowship (ISGF) voor oud-leden van de WOSM en de WAGGGS. Daarnaast bestaan er nog enkele kleine wereldorganisaties, die niet samen- werken met de WOSM en de WAGGGS: Confédération Européenne de Scoutisme (CES), Order of World Scouts (OWS), Union Internationale des Guides et Scouts d'Europe (UIGSE-FSE), World Federation of Independent Scouts (WFIS) en World Organization of Independent Scouts (WOIS). Internationale activiteiten[bewerken] Om de vier jaar wordt de internationale versie van de Jamboree gehouden: de Wereldjamboree. Ook wordt ieder jaar over de hele wereld in het derde weekend van oktober een JOTA (Jamboree On The Air) gehouden, waarbij scouts contact met elkaar maken via korte golf zendapparatuur. De internet- versie van de JOTA wordt de JOTI (Jamboree On The Internet) genoemd, waarbij scouts via het wereldwijde netwerk contact met elkaar leggen. België In België spreekt men in plaats van scouting meestal over de scouts. Scou- ting is in België grotendeels opgesplitst naar de federale structuur van het land. De WOSM en WAGGGS scoutingorganisaties zijn ondergebracht in één lan- delijke parapluorganisatie (The Guides and Scouts Movement of Belgium / De Gidsen- en Scoutsbeweging in België / Le Guidisme et Scoutisme en Bel- gique) om zo lid te mogen zijn van deze wereldorganisaties. Eén scoutsbeweging is aangesloten bij de Internationale Unie van de Euro- pascouts en -gidsen (UIGSE-FSE) en heeft leden in alle landsdelen van Bel- gië: • Europascouts en -gidsen België / Guides et Scouts d'Europe (ESG-B FSE), met ongeveer 1200 leden in heel België. Dankzij de internationale instellingen in België zijn er diverse internationale scoutinggroepen voor anderstaligen zoals Amerikaanse[2], Britse [3], Finse[4], Poolse en Noorse groepen. Gidsen- en Scoutsbeweging in België (GSB) is de Belgische component van de wereldbewegingen Scouting en Guiding. GSB is lid van de World Associa- tion of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) en de World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). GSB waarborgt en bewaakt de definitie, de kwaliteit en de standpunten van Scouts en Gidsen in België. GSB wil ook het internationale beleid van de ver- schillende associaties coördineren, met name tegenover de beide wereldbe- wegingen (WOSM & WAGGGS). GSB is het platform van de door WOSM en/of WAGGGS erkende Belgische scout- en gidsenassociaties. De leden van GSB maken deel uit van een edu- catieve beweging voor en door jongeren, gedragen en geleid door vrijwilli- gers. GSB en haar leden zijn onafhankelijk, politiek onpartijdig en open voor iedereen, gebaseerd op het doel, de waarden en de methoden zoals ontwik- keld door onze stichter, Baden-Powell. I am pleased to inform you that our member Hallvard Slettebø served successfully as Apprentice Juror at the FIP world stamp exhibition Portugal 2010, and has now received accreditation as FIP Juror for Thematic Philately. I am sure that you will all join with me in congratulating him on this success. Elsewhere in this issue you will see a formal announcement of the Annual General Meeting which is being held earlier this year in the hope that it will encourage and enable more members to attend. As last year the Meeting will be held at the Scout Docklands Project aboard the H.Q. Training Ship, the MV Lord Amory, commenc- ing at 14.00. The site is within easy walking distance of stops on the Docklands Light Railway and there is a local area map on the back page showing directions. I hope that you all enjoy this issue and the good news is that I still have some articles in hand, including the final part of Peter Duck’s Handstamps. However, not to be complacent, I would welcome some more so that the Bulletin can have a balance of subjects and I can have a choice in filling the spaces.

    Scouts BSA can earn both the World Conservation Award and the International Spirit Award in One Program Year This plan is for experienced Scouts who have completed or are working on merit badges that satisfy World Conservation Award requirements 1, 2, and 3 below. SCOUTS BSA MEMBERS CAN EARN THE WORLD CONSERVATION AWARD BY: Earning the following merit badges: 1. Environmental Science OR Sustainability merit badge 2. Soil and Water Conservation OR Fish and Wildlife Management merit badge 3. Citizenship in the World merit badge AND Participating in a conservation project as part of an approved Scouting program totaling at least three hours that addresses a conservation need common to more than one country To reach the Scouts BSA application form for the World Conservation Award, go to https://www.scouting.org/awards/awards-central/world-conservation/ and click on Scouts BSA World Conservation Award. Once Scouts have completed the requirements, complete the application form and submit it to a Michigan Crossroads Council Scout Shop to purchase the Scouts BSA World Conservation Award emblem, No. 140.     OCTOBER 2019 From the President’s Shack, Ron Ford, KF5OMH: Will fall ever get here? I’m beginning to ponder that question. According to the weather report on the news this morning, we’re in for one more week of hot weather, then it will cool off. Here’s hoping that the weather forecasters are correct. That means we should have perfect weather for our JOTA event on October 19. The speaker at the September meeting was Steve Lott Smith the ARRL North Texas Section Manager. He brought us up to date on things going on within the ARRL and particularly in the North Texas Section. We really appreciate him getting up way before the chickens to come to Lewisville for the meeting. Speaking of JOTA, the Scouting Jamboree-on-the-air event, October 19 is right around the corner. Plan to come out and spend some time observing, or better yet, helping to get youngsters on the air. Only if you can spend just one hour, you will definitely benefit from doing so. Mike, W5EVT, is looking for willing help for the event so give him a shout and offer your services. There are a lot of things that need to be done in order for this event to be a success. Conner Pavilion at Lake Park is the venue we’ll be using for the day.
