On The Horizon – September 2021 4 ======> COMMISSIONER’S CORNER <======Dear New Horizons district --- SEMPER GUMBY! Always flexible!

Be excited about Scouting and our fall events, but be flexible, creative, and patient as the pandemic runs its course. Semper Gumby.

Be on guard against the temptation to simply return to pre-pandemic routines by default. Fresh new ideas are necessary to help deliver Scouting’s goals of character and leadership development, citizenship training, and personal fitness in our rapidly changing world.

The new families who will join your Scouting unit in the coming weeks are ready to lean in with fresh new ideas about Scouting. Give them many ways to share their thoughts and make a difference. Your Scouting program will be stronger for it.

Best wishes for a great fall recruitment,

Yours in Scouting,

For more information, contact Ken McGohan - [email protected] ======> MEMBERSHIP <======It’s BACK TO SCHOOL time! Is your unit gearing up for School Night to Join Scouting? Unit materials should have been picked up at August roundtable meeting and we’ve had several requests for collateral for the SNJS events at your schools. SNJS is a fantastic opportunity for Troops to assist Packs and make a favorable impression. Many troops provide youth leaders to play games with cub prospects, run activities, learn about Scouting and above all else: to make a favorable first impression! STEM activities, knot tying, team building and learning about the Scout Oath and Law are great activities to engage our newest cub scouts at the SNJS events.

Be sure you have designated helpers for your SNJS event! We recommend: • Arrive Early! – give yourself 30 minutes to arrange the room and get your supplies in order • Greet with a Smile! – you know what an awesome program this is! • Provide Unit Information – let your prospects know about the unit and this is the perfect time to provide them with your 2021-2022 unit calendar • Complete Application – parents should complete the youth application and you could also provide a laptop to accept online applications • Collect Registration Fee – Dues should be paid at sign up! • Youth Activity – incentivize your families to get through all stations by providing something fun for them to do at the end! Give them a taste of things to come!

School Night to Join Scouting offers both in-person and virtual events and are currently set for the following districts/evenings. More details will be forthcoming!
