Local Railway Items from Area Papers - 1992 05/01/1992 Ottawa Citizen Maniwaki Train finds new backer Citizen staff The Wakefield steam train looks like it's back on track with Outaouais businessman Marc Grondin's $l-million proposal to run it for the next 25 years. Grondin's proposal, which would see tourists on scenic rail trips between Hull and Wakefield by June 27, remains to be ratified by the ' train council on Monday. The council was created by the municipalities of Hull, Chelsea and La Peche to revive the steam train. The project was put in jeopardy when Andy Tommy, a key investor, pulled out three months ago. The council then called for new proposals. "Marc Grondin answered the call," council co-ordinator Gilles Ruest said Saturday. Grondin's proposal, the only one the council received, "puts the train in a position to take off," Hull councillor Yves Dueharme said. "I'm certainly excited," said Grondin, who has been involved in the tourist industry for many years. His $l-mil-lion investment will be matched by a $1.4-million grant from the Quebec government to restore the line. Grondin, who believes he can make a profit on the train, intends to operate it year-round. TRACING THE LINES Eastern Ontario Railway History in Maps by Brian Gilhuly © 2015 Brian Gilhuly Cover photograph © Arnprior & McNab/Braeside Archives Tracing the Lines Introduction Created to mark 150 years of railways in Arnprior, this brief history gives that town pride of place. The maps show settlements from 1807, as well as the location and ownership of public railways from 1854 to 2015, in present-day eastern Ontario and western Québec. The area covered is roughly centred on Carp, extending from Rigaud west as far as Rivière-des-Joachins and from Belleville north to Maniwaki. Commercial navigation on rivers and canals is shown. Industrial, logging and light railways are not included, apart from the Arnprior-Nepean Railway, nor are sidings and yards. US territory is not mapped. Maps show the state of the rail network at year end. The choice of years to depict was based on the timing of events relevant to Arnprior and McNab/Braeside. Nearby settlements appear on the map from the generally-accepted date of their founding, which usually is when a mill or store was erected. Names of political entities are correct for the date of the map. Setting the Stage (Maps 1 – 3) Development of the Ottawa valley was kick- started by the British Parliament in 1807, when it imposed a 275% duty on timber imports from traditional Baltic suppliers and created the square timber trade from the Ottawa. As Map 1 shows, the European presence on the Ottawa was then limited to a few fur trade posts, Philemon Wright’s settlement at the mouth of the Gatineau River and another settlement of American migrants at Lachute. -

Most J class Moguls were scrapped early, but 3011 lasted until the early 1950’s in Brockville tunnel service because of its small size. Local Railway Items from Area Papers - 2017 31/05/2017 CBC News Smiths Falls A City of Ottawa study has concluded overpasses or underpasses are needed at five rail crossings, including the site of a fatal crash between a double-decker city bus and a Via Rail passenger train four years ago - but Via and other levels of government will have to help cover the cost. The study was commissioned last year after the Transportation Safety Board recommended the city once again consider the need for such crossings, in the wake of the fatal Barrhaven crash on Sept. 18, 2013. The study, published Wednesday in advance of next week's meeting of the city's transportation committee, concludes the rail crossings at Woodroffe Avenue, the Transitway, Fallowfield Road, Merivale Road and Jockvale Road should all be grade separated "due to the existing and anticipated increases in road, Transitway and rail traffic." Overpasses recommended at Woodroffe, Transitway and Fallowfield The cost to revamp all five crossings is estimated at $430 million, meaning the city will need to do the work in phases and will also need help from Via and the federal and provincial governments. The city looked into grade separation at several level rail crossings more than a decade ago, but high costs, geotechnical issues and other factors led the city to decide against grade separation at those locations. Overpasses are now recommended for the Woodroffe, Transitway and Fallowfield locations because of previously identified soil and hydrogeological conditions, while underpasses are recommended for Merivale Road and Jockvale Road. The three overpasses should be the first projects tackled, followed by Merivale Road and then Jockvale Road, the study said. -
