Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters.     “Be My Baby”—The Ronettes (1963) Added to the National Registry: 2006 Essay by Cary O’Dell The Ronettes Original label Phil Spector Instantly infectious and memorable, “Be My Baby” has been described as the “Record of the Century” and the “greatest pop record ever made.” It was recorded by the Ronettes in 1963. It was written by Phil Spector, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich and was produced by Phil Spector. It was named to the National Recording Registry in 2006. The Ronettes were a group of girls from Spanish Harlem, sisters Veronica (“Ronnie”) and Estelle Bennett and their cousin Nedra Talley. Before becoming a trio, the young women were a group of five joined by two other cousins, Elaine and Diane. (Sometimes they were also joined by their male cousin, Ira.) They sang together and perfected their harmonies at their grandmother’s house before branching out to play local dances and talent contests. Along with refining their line-up and sound, the girls also defined their look. In his biography of Phil Spector, author Mick Brown says of the group: The standard demeanor of girl groups of the day was one of demure innocence…But the Ronettes looked as if it was a Saturday night and they were cruising for trouble—figure- hugging dresses, hair piled into improbable beehives and lashings of mascara, which transformed the youthful high school girls into vamps. Today, the Ronettes are nearly as remembered for their look (which would later be largely carbon-copied by Amy Winehouse) as for their sound. After first being signed by and recording for the Colpix label (under the name Ronnie and the Relatives), the Ronettes came to the attention of Phil Spector who immediately took a liking to the group and especially to its de facto leader Ronnie.

    Windows to the Past 1960 – 1969 Girls Scouts was founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low. In 1911, Juliette met Sir Robert Baden-Powell, who introduced her to the Boy Scout and Girl Guide movement. Juliette brought the movement back to the United States and started the first troop on March 12, 1912. The Windows to the Past program will let your troop experience some of the activities that Girl Scouts did during the decade we are working on. Girls need to complete four activities to earn the 1960 – 1969 lapel pin that can be purchased at the council shop. It was a time when a generation rebelled and lost its innocence. From the Vietnam War to the struggle for racial equality to the birth of the counterculture, the 1960s was a decade of change, experimentation and hope that transformed an entire nation. Abstract Resistance to Billboard’s recent incorporation of digital download sales and streaming data along with radio to determine weekly chart rank- ings on the Hot Country and R&B/Hip-Hop Song charts was to be ex- pected. Uproar over the magazine’s changes to chart methodology date back more than sixty years to its first publication of the Hot 100, a weekly chart that determines the most popular singles in America. However, the most controversial change occurred with the publication’s 1991 decision to incorporate SoundScan data in determining rankings on both the Top 200 Album and Hot 100 Singles charts. While some experts predicted the change would alter the make-up of specific genres of music appearing on the weekly monitors, few had the foresight to project the significant increase in certain types of music hitting the top of the charts after the alteration to these most important measurements of popularity of Ameri- can music. Urban music (R&B/Rap) and Country titles roared to the top echelons of both charts immediately thereafter. This paper will explore the severity of the change and its effects on the marketing, production, and business plan decisions that emerged as a result thereof, and led to Urban music dominating the charts for the next twenty years.
