Most of these songs are traditional numbers re-recorded by a wealth of musicians. A few are unique original numbers by country greats Hank Williams, Townes Van Zandt and Barbecue Bob. ABSTRACT Days Up and Down They Come: Townes Van Zandt and the Search for the Meaning of Life and Death Hunter H. Hewell Director: Prof. Robert Darden Texas has had a long standing tradition of excellent songwriting, and has been known to produce outstanding songwriters in each generation. Perhaps no time was filled with more prolific Texas songwriters than the late 1970’s in which artists such as Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings dominated the country music scene. However, no songwriter from that era is as highly regarded in folklore and legend as the portentous Townes Van Zandt. Despite a long struggle with alcohol and drugs, Van Zandt's songwriting abilities have been unrivaled in music. Each of his songs have a literary quality that allows them to tap into otherworldly truths. Through study of his life and music, I have attempted to find out what Van Zandt has to say about what it means to live and die, topics on which he frequently writes. The music of Van Zandt gives an interesting look on the meaning of life, death, and sorrow given from the perspective of a true artist and poet. Atkinson 22 Produced by The Berkeley Electronic Press, 2010 1 Townes Van Zandt performing in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, Photo courtesy Paul Needham Journal of Texas Music History, Vol. 10 [2010], Iss. 1, Art. 4 Townes Van Zandt never was a good fit for this earthly world.1 After all, the Fort Worth native, a cult figure at best outside the Austin and Nashville music communities during his lifetime, knew his time here would be short.“I don’t envision a very long life for myself,” a youthful Van Zandt says early in Margaret Brown’s 2005 documentary Be Here To Love Me.“Like, I think my life will run out before my work does, you know? I’ve designed it that way.” He lived fast and wrote faster, even as his blueprint devolved into alcoholism and 2 drug addiction. Like his childhood hero, Hank 23 Williams, Van Zandt died on New Year’s Day. He rests in Fort Worth’s Dido Cemetery. Van Zandt baited his demons for 52 years, a journey further darkened by severe manic depression and electroshock therapy, before dying at his Tennessee home in 1997.3 Along the way, he became one of the modern era’s most elegant lyricists. Consider the opening lines of “Quicksilver Daydreams of Maria”: “Well, the diamond fades quickly when matched to the face of Maria/All the harps they sound empty when she lifts her lips to the sky.” Every word frames the woman’s beauty.

In 2004 we decided to share our passion for documentary film with Missoula by hosting the inaugural Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, and the communi- ty responded. Over the last three years Big Sky has grown beyond any of our wildest expectations. This year we will be screening 96 outstanding documentary films from 28 countries, including 14 World Premiers, 10 North American and United States Premiers, 39 Northwest Premiers and 19 Montana Premiers. This year we received over 800 entries, making our event one of the most entered documentary festivals in the world. With such a wealth of films to choose from, the festival will once again run an entire week at the historic Wilma Theatre downtown Missoula. It has a mystique that no other state and few foreign countries have ever equaled. Texas also has the distinction of being the only state in America that was an independent country for almost 10 years, free and separate, recognized as a sovereign government by the United States, France, and England. The pride and confidence of Texans started in those years, and the "Lone Star" emblem, a symbol of those feelings, was developed through the adventures and sacrifices of those that came before us. This rich history is also reflected in the music of Texas, which presents itself as vast and diverse as the Lone Star State’s landscape. The Texas State Historical Association’s Handbook of Texas—a multidisciplinary online encyclopedia of Texas history, geography, and culture—has explored this musical voice through two print volumes—The Handbook of Texas Music (2003) and The Handbook of Texas Music, Second Edition (2012), published in partnership with the Texas Music Office (Office of the Governor) and the Center for Texas Music History (Texas State University).
