WE, THE MINISTERS AND HIGH-LEVEL AUTHORITIES RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF THE AMERICAS, gathered in the city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from November 17-19, 2010, on the occasion of the Second Meeting of Ministers and High-Level Authorities on Sustainable Development in the framework of the Inter- American Council for Integral Development (CIDI), reaffirm our commitment to sustainable development, 2. RECOGNIZING that human beings are at the center of concerns for sustainable development, that they are entitled to a healthy and productive life in harmony with nature, and that poverty eradication is an integral part of sustainable development; 2bis. In that time we have learned some lessons. Unfortunately, we continue to repeat many of the same mistakes. -
Your Mission Trip to Jimaní, Dominican Republic Jimaní Is A
Your Mission Trip to Jimaní, Dominican Republic Jimaní is a small town in the southwest part of the Dominican Republic. It is one of the few official border crossings into Haiti. Chadasha is currently working to provide medical care for those in the community and a home for orphans and abandoned children. We also want to reach out into the community with the hope of Christ every chance we get! So, we have a pre- school on our main property and partner with a Haitian pastor to help run a school in a Haitian village 25 minutes away. There are so many opportunities to do God’s work, and we are thankful for your willingness to come and serve the people of the Dominican Republic and Haiti alongside Chadasha’s full time missionaries. We hope you find the following information helpful as you prepare for your trip. THE COST: The total cost for the trip is $800. The first $400 is due by January 15, with the remainder due by June 15. A payment option will be available on the church website. We want to help anyone who believes they are lead to go in raising the necessary support. HOUSING & MEALS: Chadasha's property in Jimaní is home to a hospital, chapel, orphanage, pre- school, and long-term missionary housing. The 2nd floor of the hospital is designed to house short-term missionary teams. There is a central living/dining area, kitchen, laundry room with washing machine, and 7 bedrooms (each has a bathroom, bunk beds, ceiling fan, closet, and a/c that works most of the time!) Some of the bedrooms are smaller and sleep up to 4 people while others are larger and can sleep 12. -

You are planning to volunteer with Aldeas de Paz for a great cause and we hope you will enjoy your stay in the Dominican Republic! This guideline has been created in order to help you to get started with the necessary information at hand. We hope it will be helpful. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact us. Please make sure you arrive at your volunteer placement location in Samana or Las Terrenas only from Monday through Friday! On the weekend's almost all of us are on trips to discover the island and enjoy the weekend mostly out of town! COVID-19 UPDATE Travelers NO longer need to provide a negative PCR or COVID-19 test upon arrival! The DR government is managing the COVID-19 crisis astonishingly successfully with well organized and widespread vaccination campaigns and through preventive and precautionary measures! Commercial flights and tourist travel to and from the Dominican Republic is open and Aldeas de Paz is completely operational and our social programs are all active. Traveling to and from the Dominican Republic is perfectly possible without difficulty and Aldeas de Paz is completely operational, all our programs are active and we have many volunteers signing up! Check current updates on the Covid-19 situation. For extra Peace of Mind we offer a free flexible travel date change. DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - ENTRY REQUIREMENTS A valid Passport is all you need to enter the Dominican Republic. Citizens from Europe, the US and Canada as well as many other countries DON'T need a visa! Even though your inicial tourist entry stamp is issued for 30 days, you are entitled to stay up to one year by paying a fee for the additional months that you remain in the country. -

Dominican Republic and Haiti Learning from living overseas Robert Di Nardo, Spiritan, Overseas Training Program Sister Simona operates a medical clinic twice weekly. he drive from Juan de Herera takes about one hour. In the truck with us are Sister Refugio, one of four T Sisters working out of Juan de Herera, and Lucia, a lay Spiritan from Brazil. Beside me is Fr. Baltazar Hernandes, a Spiritan priest originally from Mexico now living and working in the Dominican Republic. The Spiritan presence here began seven years ago with the arrival of Fr. Jonas Rivera CSSp from Puerto Rico as pastor in Juan de Herera. Frs. Don McEachin (USA) and Werby Mitial (Haiti) soon followed. Fr. Baltazar joined the group in Janu- ary 2011 and I arrived a few months later to complete the overseas experience component of my training program. We are heading to Banica, a town on the Dominican Repub- lic side of the Haitian/Dominican border. The road approach- ing Banica offers a wonderful view of the Haitian landscape. -

Rabe INTRODUCTION In the mid-1970s, in the aftermath of the Watergate scandals, journal ists, legislators, and scholars inquired into the Cold War activities of the Central Intelligence Agency. Among the most significant of the studies was the report, Alleged Assassination Plots Involving Foreign Leaders, issued by the Select Senate Committee charged to study intelligence activities and chaired by Senator Frank.Church, Democrat of Idaho.1 The committee concluded that, during the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations, U.S. officials plotted to kill Fidel Castro of Cuba and Patrice Lumumba of the Congo. The senators also found that officials supplied weapons to Dominican dissidents whose aim was to assassinate Rafael Trujillo. Finally, they agreed that in 1963 the Kennedy administration had encour aged South Vietnamese generals to overthrow Ngo Dinh Diem and that in 1970 the Nixon government encouraged Chilean military officers to block Salvador Allende from assuming the office of President of Chile. Those plots led to the death of Diem and his brother, and General Rene Schneider, the Chilean Commander-in-Chief of the Army and a constitu tionalist opposed to military coups. Though the Church Committee found no evidence that U.S. officials favored the assassinations of the Diem brothers or Schneider, as a result of these findings, the U.S. Congress made assassination of foreign leaders illegal. While the senators determined that the United States had plotted against foreign leaders, they could not agree on who authorized the assas sination plots. The system of executive command and control, they noted, "was so ambiguous that it is difficult to be certain at what levels assassina tion activity was known and authorized." The CIA may have acted without explicit authorization from the presidents. -

Blood, Power, and Privilege: Why the man who ordered the slaughter of a race was not racist Abstract This article argues that Trujillo's ordered massacre of the people in Haiti did not stem from his own racism. Rather, it argues that it was motivated by a desire to please the Dominican elite and a desire for personal power.
