General Topographic Features I The MEAUP is located in the northern Nebraska Panhandle roughly 10 to 12 miles south of Crawford, Nebraska and five miles northeast of Marsland, Nebraska. This portion of the Nebraska Panhandle is dominated topographically by the Pine Ridge escarpment, a rugged, stony region of forested buttes and I deep canyons that divides the High Plains to the south from the Missouri Plateau to the north. The project area straddles the southernmost boundary of the Pine Ridge escarpment and another distinct topographic region to the south, the Dawes Table lands. Taken together, these regions form a unique local mosaic of I topography, geology, and habitat within the project area. I 2. Project Area a. Topography I The Pine Ridge escarpment covers more than one thousand square miles across far eastern Wyoming, northern Nebraska and extreme southern South Dakota (Nebraska State Historical Society 2000). -

UNDERSTANDING COMMUNITY: MICROWEAR ANALYSIS OF BLADES AT THE MOUND HOUSE SITE SILAS LEVI CHAPMAN 89 Pages Understanding Middle Woodland period sites has been of considerable interest for North American archaeologists since early on in the discipline. Various Middle Woodland period (50 BCE-400CE) cultures participated in shared ideas and behaviors, such as constructing mounds and earthworks and importing exotic materials to make objects for ceremony and for interring with the dead. These shared behaviors and ideas are termed by archaeologists as “Hopewell”. The Mound House site is a floodplain mound group thought to have served as a “ritual aggregation center”, a place for the dispersed Middle Woodland communities to congregate at certain times of year to reinforce their shared identity. Mound House is located in the Lower Illinois River valley within the floodplain of the Illinois River, where there is a concentration of Middle Woodland sites and activity. -

HOUSEHOLDS AND CHANGING USE OF SPACE AT THE TRANSITIONAL EARLY MISSISSIPPIAN AUSTIN SITE A Thesis presented in partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology University of Mississippi by BENJAMIN GARRETT DAVIS May 2019 ABSTRACT The Austin Site (22TU549) is a village site located in Tunica County, Mississippi dating to approximately A.D. 1150-1350, along the transition from the Terminal Late Woodland to the Mississippian period. While Elizabeth Hunt’s (2017) masters thesis concluded that the ceramics at Austin emphasized a Late Woodland persistence, the architecture and use of space at the site had yet to be analyzed. This study examines this architecture and use of space over time at Austin to determine if they display evidence of increasing institutionalized inequality. This included creating a map of Austin based on John Connaway’s original excavation notes, and then analyzing this map within the temporal context of the upper Yazoo Basin. -

INTRODUCTION Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Implementation Plans are platforms for evaluating and tracking water quality protection and restoration. These plans have been designed to accommodate continual updates and revisions as new conditions and information warrant. In addition, field verification of watershed characteristics and listing data has been built into the preparation of the plans. The overall goal of the plans is to define a set of actions that will help achieve water quality standards in the state of Georgia. This implementation plan addresses the general characterist ics of the watershed, the sources of pollution, stakeholder s and public involvement, and education/o utreach activities. In addition, the plan describes regulatory and voluntary practices/control actions (management measures) to reduce pollutants, milestone schedules to show the development of the managemen t measures (measurable milestones), and a monitoring plan to determine the efficiency of the management measures. The Lamb Site (11SC24): Evidence of Cahokian Contact and Mississippianization in the Central Illinois River Valley Dana N. Bardolph and Gregory D. Wilson The analysis of materials recovered from salvage excavations at the Lamb site (11SC24) in the central Illinois River valley (CIRV) has generated new insight into the Mississip- pianization of west-central Illinois. The evidence reveals a context of converging but still very much entangled Woodland and Mississippian traditions. The Lamb site residents appear to have been selectively adopting or emulating aspects of Mississippian lifeways, while maintaining certain Bauer Branch traditions during the period of contact with Cahokia Mississippians. The eleventh and twelfth centuries A.D. comprised an era during which many Native American groups throughout the Midwest and Southeast altered their cosmological beliefs and socioeconomic relationships to participate in a Mississippian way of life. The causes of Mississippianization were variable and complex but often involved inten- sified negotiations among social groups with different geographical origins. Cahokia, the earliest and most complex Mississippian polity, played an important role in these far-flung negotiations. Indeed, the Mississippianization of the Midwest is one of the best-documented examples of culture contact in pre-Columbian North America. Beginning around A.D. 1050, stylistically Cahokian material culture appeared in a number of discontiguous portions of the Midwest. Mississippianization resulting from contact between Cahokians and different Woodland groups has been examined within several different methodological and theoretical frameworks. A range of direct and in- direct contact scenarios have emerged from this theorizing, from detached emulations of Cahokia by local people, to limited engagements with or small-scale movements of Cahokians, to whole-group site-unit intrusions of Cahokians into the northern Midwest (e.g., Conrad 1991; Delaney-Rivera 2000, 2007; Emerson and Lewis 1991; Emerson et al.
