Nationality is a legal relationship between on individual person and a state. Nationality affords the state jurisdiction over the person and affords the person the protection of the state. Nationality is the state of belonging to a particular country or nation. The term “Nationality” is derived from the Latin word “natus” meaning (to be born), belonging to some racial stock or being related by birth or having blood relationship. Nationality affords the state jurisdiction over the person and affords the person the protection of the state. What these rights and duties are varies from state to state. This relationship generally enables intervention by a State to provide help and protection to its nationals when they are harmed by other States. By custom and international conventions, it is the right of each state to determine who its nationals are. In some cases, determinations of nationality are also governed by public international law for example, by treaties on statelessness and the European Convention on Nationality. Nationality differs technically and legally from citizenship, which is a different legal relationship between a person and a country. The noun national can include both citizens and non-citizens. The most common distinguishing feature of citizenship is that citizens have the right to participate in the political life of the state, such as by voting or standing for election. However, in most modern countries all nationals are citizens of the state, and full citizens are always nationals of the state. DEFINITIIONS ❖ Cambridge Dictionary, “Nationality means a group of people of some race, religion, traditions etc. ❖ Merriam Webstrer, “Nationality means a people having a common origin, tradition and language and capable of forming or actually constituting a nation state.” ❖ James A.H.Murray’s says that, “Nationality is an extensive aggregate of persons, so closely associated with each other by common descent, language or history as to form a distinct race or people, usually organized as a separate political state and occupying a definite territory.” ❖ Greenfeld, “Nationality is the synonym of a people, a polity or even a territory”. This is a non-ethnic use of nationality’. ❖ Samuel Johnson - “Nationality is people distinguished from another people, generally by their language…. Or government”. NATIONALITY VERSUS CITIZENSHIP Conceptually, citizenship is focused on the internal political life of the state and nationality is a matter of international dealings. In the modern era, the concept of full citizenship encompasses not only active political rights, but full civil rights and social rights. Nationality is a necessary but not sufficient condition to exercise full political rights within a state or other polity. Nationality is required for full citizenship, and some people have no nationality in international law. A person who is denied full citizenship or nationality is commonly called a stateless person. Historically, the most significant difference between a national and a citizen is that the citizen has the right to vote for elected officials, and to be elected. This distinction between full citizenship and other, lesser relationships goes back to antiquity. In the past, most people were excluded from citizenship on the basis of sex, socioeconomic class, ethnicity, religion, and other factors. However, they held a legal relationship with their government akin to the modern concept of nationality. NATIONALITY VERSUS NATIONAL IDENTITY National identity is a person's subjective sense of belonging to one state or to one nation. A person may be a national of a state, in the sense of being its citizen, without subjectively or emotionally feeling a part of that state, for example many migrants in Europe often identify with their ancestral and/or religious background rather than with the state of which they are citizens. Conversely, a person may feel that he belongs to one state without having any legal relationship to it. For example, children who were brought to the U.S. illegally when quite young and grow up there with little contact with their native country and its culture often have a national identity of feeling American, despite

    C ULTURAL IDENT I TY STUD I E S The South Tyrol Question, CIS 1866–2010 Georg Grote From National Rage to Regional State South Tyrol is a small, mountainous area located in the central Alps. Despite its modest geographical size, it has come to represent a success story in the Georg Grote protection of ethnic minorities in Europe. When Austrian South Tyrol was given to Italy in 1919, about 200,000 German and Ladin speakers became Italian citizens overnight. Despite Italy’s attempts to Italianize the South Tyroleans, especially during the Fascist era from 1922 to 1943, they sought to Question, 1866–2010 Tyrol South The maintain their traditions and language, culminating in violence in the 1960s. In 1972 South Tyrol finally gained geographical and cultural autonomy from Italy, leading to the ‘regional state’ of 2010. This book, drawing on the latest research in Italian and German, provides a fresh analysis of this dynamic and turbulent period of South Tyrolean and European history. The author provides new insights into the political and cultural evolution of the understanding of the region and the definition of its role within the European framework. In a broader sense, the study also analyses the shift in paradigms from historical nationalism to modern regionalism against the backdrop of European, global, national and local historical developments as well as the shaping of the distinct identities of its multilingual and multi-ethnic population. Georg Grote was born in the Lower Rhine Valley in northwest Germany. He has lived in Ireland since 1993 and lectures in Western European history at CIS University College Dublin.

Since most studies related to nationalism have focused on the contemporary issues in nationalism, this article examines the different verities, issues and concerns of nationalism. By employing document review, this article assesses the ethnic nationalism, civic nationalism, expansionist nationalism, romantic nationalism, cultural nationalism, post-colonial nationalism, liberation nationalism, liberal nationalism, religious nationalism and diaspora nationalism. The study finds that participation in international organizations as well as regional integration erodes nationalist ideology and because of the more interdependent world, not only economically, but politically and culturally as well leads the declining of nationalism. Finally, the article concludes with the concept that in homogeneous and uniformly global world, the ultra-nationalism may lead to further crisis and radicalization of Nationalism is not appreciated in the present world. WASH programming intersects with and largely determines the success of efforts to reduce child mortality, disease, and poverty and to increase primary education, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. Each March during World Water Month, the UNICEF Tap Project invites volunteers, restaurants, corporate sponsors, celebrities, and government supporters across the country to raise funds and awareness around WASH and to help UNICEF provide clean water and adequate sanitation to children around the world. Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) and UNICEF No one can survive without water. Yet 768 million people around the world do not have safe, clean water to drink, and more than 2.5 billion people live without a proper toilet. The lack of these basic necessities isn’t just inconvenient — it’s lethal. The numbers are staggering: an estimated 1,600 children under five die every day from diarrheal diseases and 1,400 of these deaths are linked to poor water, sanitation and hygiene. Diarrhea is the second largest killer of children under five in the developing world and can be reduced by up to 31 percent simply by improving water quality. It has long been said that prevention is the best cure, and ensuring that all children have sustainable access to clean water is among the most immediate and cost-effective ways to eliminate preventable death and disease.

Iain Johnston Yongwook Ryu Identity and Security: Identity Distance Theory and Regional Affairs in Northeast and Southeast Asia Abstract The dissertation explores the relationship between identity and international security, and tests the effect of the former on the latter by analyzing a set of puzzling phenomena in East Asia—the emergence of mutual threat perception in Sino-Japanese relations; increasingly conflictual relations between Korea and Japan after Korea’s democratization; the establishment of a regional human rights mechanism by ASEAN; and the settlement of key territorial disputes by Southeast Asian nations. Coupled with the diverging frequency of militarized interstate disputes between both regions, these phenomena suggest that Northeast Asia (NEA) has become a region of conflict with high tensions, while Southeast Asia (SEA) has increasingly developed into a region of peace with decreasing tension. The dissertation advances a new theoretical framework, namely, identity distance theory, to understand these puzzling phenomena.
